Secret erotic fan fiction shame

FanFictionShame · 05/06/2021 19:20

I have name changed for this because, well it’s embarrassing.

I have- in my 40th year- discovered erotic fan fiction.

It happened over lockdown and i stumbled across it totally by accident. We watched the US Office for the first time and I joined a Reddit group about it. And then through that I stumbled across some very saucy Jim and Pam fan fiction and it was.... interesting. So I read some more. And then some more. And now I read lots. And have kind of strayed into some other fandoms (although The Office is my main one). What’s ironic is that I don’t even really like Jim and Pam as characters in the actual show. They annoy the shit out of me.

I haven’t told a real life soul about this. Mostly because I’m an old lady reading stuff probably meant for 15yr old girls but also because I’m.... quite literary. Three lit degrees. Lecture in literature. Read three books a week. Am a huge snob about books. I could never, ever admit this little hobby in real life.

So..... anyone else out there? Or..... just me?

Signed,

An embarrassed old lady who didn’t fancy John Krasinski even a bit until I started reading this stuff, but who would now happily climb him like a tree.

I don't even understand what this is! Is it sex stories about characters in tv shows?

SpnBaby1967 · 05/06/2021 19:25

I love a bit of fan fiction! Even write some bits myself. Not really into erotic stuff though, but info enjoy some angst/hurt/comfort stuff.

HollowTalk · 05/06/2021 19:30

It can be about anyone famous, @Notthenever. There's tons of it around. I think that people find it easier to write when they don't have to think up the main characters and it's easier for people to search for the stories by name. I've never read one, though - shame on you, OP!!!

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 05/06/2021 19:32

Some of us are all literary'n'shit and even write it. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4223393-For-lovers-of-fanfiction

GertietheGherkin · 05/06/2021 19:35

I'm confused who are Pam and Jim?
You say you watched something and then went on to Reddit?
Can you explain a bit more? ( Yes I'm probably thick sorry Grin)

CookieMumsters · 05/06/2021 19:41

The joy of literature is stories, escapism, magic. Not all stories have to be wonderfully written. Lots of great story tellers know nothing about the art of literature. I don't know what you lecture about if you don't just appreciate the joy of a story. No shame in fanfic.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 05/06/2021 19:45

Seriously, just enjoy it. It's creative, it's escapist, it's fun, maybe it gives you the good tingles. Where's the harm? To anyone? Plenty of fanfic is better written than many published works, and plenty of published works are effectively fanfic for which the authors got paid.

Smartiepants79 · 05/06/2021 19:52

BlushGrin I’ll join you and own up to it being my one and only guilty pleasure.
I’m also well read and pretty well educated in real life.
It’s pure escapism. AO3 is a wonderful rabbit hole to fall down. I’ve read some truly lovely, beautiful stories on there.
It’s brill!

FanFictionShame · 05/06/2021 20:01

I am incredibly encouraged to find that I’m not alone!!! Honestly, I’ve been loving reading this stuff all year- not just the erotic stuff actually, quite like a lot of it- but literally haven’t told anyone about it as it feels kind of ridiculous!! @Smartiepants79 I’m glad to hear it’s your guilty pleasure too, along with lots of other people.

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity thanks for the heads up- I’m coming to that thread and I’m excited!

@GertietheGherkin Reddit is a social media site with “subs” on different topics. Really fun website generally, not just a fanfic smut fest! Jim and Pam are the equivalents of the Tim and Dawn characters in the US remake of The Office.

I feel so much cleaner suddenly Grin

Ooooooh love a bit of naughty fan fic !! The Dr who one was my fave, i think it was called a teaspoon and an open mind? Its utterly harmless, no one is being hurt by it and if it gets your engine going then more the better! Oh and PS theres no way you are too old I know people who write stuff well into their 60s !!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 05/06/2021 20:24

Wait till you find the slashfic! Grin

Yes!

I have an email specifically set up for my AO3 subscriptions. There are some very, very talented writers on there.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 05/06/2021 20:41

@slashlover. Ooh, what fandoms? I've an endless list of avengers recs but need to branch out a bit.

QuestionableMouse · 05/06/2021 20:43

You need to get on AO3 😂

QuestionableMouse · 05/06/2021 20:44

I'm a published author, have a English degree and love writing a bit of fan fic. It's a break from my own worlds and the quick feedback is very appealing 😁

topcat2014 · 05/06/2021 20:57

You should have a go at writing some!

I mostly read older shows.

I'm on the Merlin fandom (Merthur forever!) and have read some Due South which I LOVED in the mid 90s and they started reshowing on one of the Sony channels during lockdown. I also read a bit of Versailles because MonChevy were cannon and I have a thing for Alexander Vlahos.

Older fandoms I've pretty much abandoned were the O.C. Seth/Ryan and Psych (which 99% of people on the UK have never heard of even though it's brilliant) Shassie, I have all 8 series to rewatch which will probably rekindle it.

I tried that, I'm a shit writer though. I did used to RP back in the day though and wrote 2 terrible Mary Sues on the 90s which have hopefully been lost in time.

Does anyone remember reading it on Yahoogroups (formally egroups) and dodgy geocities sites?

MoChridhe · 05/06/2021 21:11

I'm an AO3 addict. I have only bought one book in 4 years. I only read AO3.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 05/06/2021 21:13

@slashlover I love Merlin! Can you recommend any good ones? Most of my bookmarks on there are Avengers Steve/Tony with a few Sherlock and Star Trek mixed in.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 05/06/2021 21:15

Oh God geocities... that takes me back. Does anyone remember Gerties Shippers on Fredfarm?

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 05/06/2021 21:15

I like LOTR fanfic - the dirty ones Blush

Toottootdrivers · 05/06/2021 21:17

50 shades of grey started out as erotic Twilight fanfiction.Regardless of your thoughts on the books, it can't be argued that there was a market for it, so you're clearly not the only one!

Saucywriter · 05/06/2021 21:24

I myself have written erotic fan fiction. I've written a few on the same theme but my most popular has been read well over 20,000 times.

I have made friends with people (anonymously) from all over the world through my writing. Only one person who I've met face to face knows what I have written and I met that person through my fanfic. Erotic fanfiction is huge.

No one in my real life knows and they would be seriously, seriously shocked if they knew, such is the epic scale of the sauce. 😊

Smartiepants79 · 05/06/2021 21:24

I’m a LOTR fan! Just enjoy all the backstories of the minor characters.
Decent writers draw me into different fandoms.
