I have a theory that there are those of us who gets holes in our underwear and live with it and there are those of us who find holes and chuck them away and buy new immediately....

and I think this determines our personality and how we navigate life.

I am currently rotating through four sets of knickers all with massive holes where the elastic has come away from the fabric at the waistband. There will be a point where those pants are literally rags and I will rummage in the drawer and find replacements or buy new.

I have the money for new knickers. I have other knickers. And yet I keep washing these pants and putting them in the drawer and wearing them!!!

I'm liking holy pants

Holy pants Batman

@BelleBlueBell

Does anyone remember a long thread about this a little while back, something about how a lot of women can't treat themselves to little things or something like that.

iirc this is a recognised thing, I'm really trying now to remember the details, I actually checked the date of this thread as it was so familiar.

Yes I remember that one too. The idea of saving things for best (and therefore never using/wearing them) comes into it too.
Mochudubh · 04/06/2021 13:39

I have a weird fear of throwing out dirty pants in case some weirdo takes them out of the bin, so holey ones always end up getting washed and put back in the drawer. Then when I pull a pair out and put them on, I don't notice the hole till I've pulled them up and then I think I'll chuck them next time. So the cycle continues and till they literally fall apart.

My DH will only wear Armani boxers for some reason and I think he’s absolutely ridiculous. He has 3 new pairs I bought him for Christmas (they’re about £10 a pair which is just bonkers) but the others are a lot older and full of holes. He still wears them rather than buying some cheaper ones even though nobody sees them except me and him and I couldn’t give a shit about the name on the waistband of his boxers. I’d gladly buy him some M&S ones like I wear but he won’t have it, has to be Armani. Idiot.

Nicolastuffedone · 04/06/2021 13:54

I rarely get holes in my pants, on the odd occasion I have, they go out.

PerhapsCarriageGreen · 04/06/2021 13:57

My holey ones are the comfiest, so they stay!

clary · 04/06/2021 13:57

A while ago I decided this was ridiculous OP; Pants with holes in need to go in the bin.

I have been throwing away one thing a day for about the last 18 months and it is great. Socks with holes in? (a regular occurrence for me, for some reason) - in the bin and buy more if needed. Knickers are £5-£7 a pack in any supermarket.

clary · 04/06/2021 14:02

Yes I agree, people, maybe mums especially, have an issue with treating themselves.

Not that it is treating yourself, exactly, to have knickers that are comfy and hole free!

@BingBangBong1 that is a terrible story about the accidental binning of your best undies Shock

Redact · 04/06/2021 14:04

I agree! By speaking with friends, family and colleagues, just in general conversations, I also came to this conclusion. I wear away with holes - pants, socks, vests, while others see a hole Chuck and buy new. One colleague is always buying new socks for her son because his socks look a little tatty, lost the new white look for sports socks and I feel a little pang of guilty that I never pay that much attention to DCs sports socks! Just wash and fold away!

I forget to check for holes after washing, so they all go back in the drawer regardless. For some reason I can't throw worn knickers or socks in the bin. I really don't want them cluttering up my life though - I have plenty without them and would probably only buy more if I got down to 7 decent pairs. So I want them gone.

I do have a new solution which I'm liking - if the holes have got too bad, I cut the knickers up before washing. It's quite satisfying.

EBearhug · 04/06/2021 14:11

I find they usually go on a seam or round the elastic, and that's easy to fix with a needle and thread. I have binned some that got beyond the simple repair stage, though.

SheepyToaster · 04/06/2021 14:12

@FourEyesGood

I’m with you, OP. I repair where I can, but am always reluctant to bin pants (maybe because they know too much? Grin).

Mine don't often get holes in, but I bin them if they do. Mine are more likely to get binned for being saggy and falling down.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/06/2021 14:27

Straight in the bin. Happens rarely though. I dread to think how old some must be but I do have a lot - probably 35/40 pairs.

AGirlsGotToDo · 04/06/2021 14:43

I've literally just thrown away a pair of underwear with holes in them. 🤣 when I didnt have much money, I would keep them but now I chuck as I go.

Everyone cuts up their pants and bras before binning for this reason...no??
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 04/06/2021 14:47

I rarely wear bras, but when I do I'm m still wearing breastfeeding bras.
I stopped breastfeeding 6 years ago.🤣

I never understood the arguments for wearing nice underwear in case a bus hits you. what a weird motivation.
if I had an accident and the paramedics were more concerned about the state of my underwear than my injuries then they'd be the worst at their jobs.
When DS4 broke his arm they didn't hesitate to cut off his expensive school jumper and bloody rightly so.

I don't care about some wear & tear on clothes, especially if I'm at home.
I hate holes in socks though. I can't stand the sight of raggy sock, they are binned as soon as I notice. it's a thing from my childhood I guess

twilightermummy · 04/06/2021 14:50

Haha I was only looking at my knickers yesterday and thinking my standards are getting extremely low now!

My knickers are a disgrace - I’m currently single so don’t seem to care. However, I do fear something happening to me in an exercise class or out on a walk where an ambulance would need to be called out and my dirty secret would be exposed! I best get some new pairs really, it’s shameful BlushGrin

AuntieMarys · 04/06/2021 14:51

Funnily enough I have just sorted out my knicker drawer and relegated 6 pairs to the bin. This is an 6 monthly highlight in my life. I only wear black or nude....mainly black in winter and nude in summer. Just ordered 6 replacement pairs bringing my total to 18.
I'm now having a large gin .

Inthesameboatatmo · 04/06/2021 15:10

I now chuck pants with holes in after one of my flaps nearly got garroted when the elastic came away from the gusset, twas painful.

TheChosenTwo · 04/06/2021 15:11

I wear holey knickers. They still work. What is the actual function of them anyway? I wear them to keep my arse cheeks warm. If there was a hole that made wearing them uncomfortable, they’d be binned. Other than that, no one else sees them other than dh and he doesn’t get a say in the state of my knickers anyway so I literally couldn’t care less. Nothing to do with money, I could afford new ones whenever I wanted, I buy myself things regularly. I just don’t care about this!
On the outside though, my clothes are smart and not holey! And the merest sight of a holey sock will have it flying towards the bin, I hate them.

afaloren · 04/06/2021 15:16

Nope. I check things carefully for holes as I fold up the laundry and if anything has a hole then it’s in the bin! Unless it’s something I can repair. I’m quite good with a needle.
