Is there a gunky throat lurgy doing the rounds?

Not Covid, I tested as soon as I felt unwell.
I thought it was hayfever at first but I’ve got a throat that feels like there’s gunk in it and I have to keep clearing it only it never clears and feels a bit sticky and thick when I swallow (boak)
It’s not sore and I feel a bit headcoldy with it and seems to either feel dry or gunky.
Weirdly I felt better during the day and it’s come back at night - it was bad last night as well.

Is this a thing that’s going around? I thought it might be hayfever as the pollen count is high but it seems a bit much for that

I’m grateful not to feel worse but it’s very irritating and I’m finding it hard to fall asleep as I’m clearing my throat every three seconds!

It does sound rather allergy like. There masses of tree pollen around at the moment . Allergies are often worse at night as your natural steroids are at their lowest. Have you ever had hay fever? How long have you had the throat thing? If it’s a week or less it could be the start of a cold. If you’ve had a cold it could be catarrh as that can really drag on.

Pivotthesofa · 03/06/2021 06:22

I do get hayfever yes but I’ve never had anything like this with it! It only started yesterday. Much worse at night, I’m struggling to sleep with it. I’ve also got a stuffy nose overnight as well, seems to be slightly better during the day

I've started to get this recently, I try and cough it up and nothing, try to swallow it, still nothing. It's worse at night but I did read up and they said things seem worse at night as there's nothing to distract you. It's irritating me big time. I feel absolutely fine aside from that 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes I currently have this, started as a sore throat then developed into a tickly cough during the day but coughing all kinds of crap up at night and early morning. Also a runny nose.

Negative covid test but feeling super self conscious and hoping the kids don't catch it.

Bumpinthenight · 03/06/2021 06:29

Yup, I have this. Generally fine when upright and then struggle when lying down.
Double dosed on my hayfever tablets and still feel crappy so it isn't my hayfever!

TOWGA · 03/06/2021 06:32

My little girl has this, she seems to be struggling with a sore throat, struggling swallowing and a horse voice. Debating a gp appointment as I'm wondering tonsillitis tbh!

WellJuhnelle · 03/06/2021 06:38

I had this a few weeks ago after a cold. No throat pain but the thickest mucus ever that I just couldn’t swallow and sometimes made it difficult to breathe.

That’s gone now but I have been left with a really bad cough that I just can’t shake (not Covid) and when I lie down my chest kind of bubbles when I breathe. Debating the doctors soon because it has been going on so long

Winkywonkydonkey · 03/06/2021 06:44

Have you had a vaccine recently? I know five people who have developed this a few days after Pfizer but we can't work out if it's a thing doing the rounds of a vaccine side effect. It passes after a.week.

bruffin · 03/06/2021 06:44

I have it and so does ds, i think its hayfever

lavenderandwisteria · 03/06/2021 06:46

DP has this and baby ds Sad

NewPapaGuinea · 03/06/2021 06:56

Yep, me too. Tickly throat and cough. Occasionally phlegm. Fisherman’s Friends help a lot. Negative covid test.

Jasmine245 · 03/06/2021 07:02

I caught this off my 18 month old a couple of weeks ago. I am feeling better now but he still has a mucousy cough.

Pivotthesofa · 03/06/2021 07:15

Eurgh I hope it doesn’t turn into a cough! The feeling like you’re struggling to breathe because it’s difficult to swallow is exactly it but it’s mainly like that at night and not all night

I’ll try some fisherman’s friends

I had the pfizer vaccine but about two and a half weeks ago so ill be surprised if it’s that.

Hoping 18 month old DS doesn’t get it because nothing I take seems to help really so not sure what I’d give him for the throat mucus situation :( hope everyone who has it feels better soon

Oh I have this too, cough, headcoldy, sneezy and sore throat and hoarse voice, also tested negative...

Northernsoullover · 03/06/2021 07:20

I had this pre covid times. My GP said laryngitis

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 03/06/2021 07:23

I have a post nasal drip and rhinitis, and suffer from excess mucus in the nose/throat and it goes into my stomach, making me feel bokey ☹️

My ENT doc told me to drink really really cold sparkling water first thing in the morning to clear the mucus from my throat. It does help!

Pivotthesofa · 03/06/2021 07:34

Thanks for the tip! I’ll get some today

DS brought home a lovely common cold virus from school, and passed it on. I spent the weekend feeling lousy and have a very productive cough. I test twice a week at work, all negative, I’ve had vacc and had Covid so I’m not worried. I haven’t had a cold for over 2 yrs.
Weirdly I’m happy that my immune system is getting a work out after 12mnths of isolation.

hartof · 03/06/2021 07:48

I'm the same, feel like I'm drowning in my own mucus. I had my 2nd Pfizer 4 weeks ago and I'd say I've had it since around then. It's now turned into a sore throat. I do suffer badly from hay fever but haven't had this in previous years.

musicalfrog · 03/06/2021 07:50

I think the annoying thing about it this time (when it develops into a cough) is the fact that you need to isolate until you get a negative test result. And probably again until your respective family members also test negative when they inevitably catch it too.

All these years I've taken for granted simply suffering from a cough without all the added complications!!

dewisant2020 · 03/06/2021 07:52

I've had this for the last few days, felt absolutely awful yesterday and went to bed at 9, just woke up and feel even worse today.
My throat is sore, headache, aching all over and a fever.
Back to bed for me

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 03/06/2021 07:53

Yea, I have this too! (and god help you when you cough in public)

Houseofvelour · 03/06/2021 08:09

Yep. Both DDs and I have it.
It's doing the rounds in nursery. We've been PCR tested and all negative.
DDs also have very drippy noses.

NewPapaGuinea · 03/06/2021 08:10

Those who’ve tested covid negative, was that a LFT or PCR? Just booked a PCR just in case.

Marmite27 · 03/06/2021 08:22

We’ve had this! I’m the last person with symptoms and we’ve all tested negative.

I completely lost my voice for 24h and now have a bad cough. The roof of my mouth is insanely itchy and the stuff I’m coughing up is disgusting. It’s like a thick jelly.
