Long bank holiday weekend - June 2022 (not a nice question to ask)

Not a nice question to ask, I know.

But the long bank holiday weekend scheduled for next year (Thursday 2nd June & Friday 3rd June) to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne...

Is the Queen dies before then, will the holiday be cancelled and we revert to the late May bank holiday?

Shock

(It's what we're all thinking....)

crumbsnamechange · 02/06/2021 14:50

I expect we'd get a bank holiday for her funeral anyway.

itsgettingwierd · 02/06/2021 14:52

Cant deny the thought didn't cross my mind Blush

Think primarily because lots of people got stung when they changed the one for VE (so teachers who'd already booked a weekend away) and I did think it could happen again.

Don't think it's wrong to consider it - she is 95!!!

It's certainly optimistic to plan something a year in advance for a 95-year-old, all we can do is keep everything crossed and hope it can go ahead...

OrangePowder · 02/06/2021 14:56

I did think when it was announced that it was a bit risky. Some sort of memorial day?

TheQueef · 02/06/2021 14:58

New Coronation?

AdaColeman · 02/06/2021 15:00

Coronation perhaps?

Surely Charlie has got all his plans ready to go!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/06/2021 15:02

I didn't know there was an extra bank holiday next year.

She's 95, so there is a higher chance of her not making it than if she was 10 years younger. So I don't know what will happen if she dies. If people have booked holiday etc based on it being a BH then it will be difficult and unpopular for the government to cancel it.

Sweetslumber · 02/06/2021 15:04

@TheQueef

New Coronation?
Yes, I think they would use the date for that.
FedNlanders · 02/06/2021 16:17

I immediately had this thought.

BlueLobelia · 02/06/2021 16:20

Had this thought also!

I hope she makes it.

newnortherner111 · 02/06/2021 16:39

Even with the worst Prime Minister in history and a man who tried to involve Her Majesty in a disgusting unlawful stunt in 2019, I cannot imagine the extra Bank Holiday being cancelled, were Her Majesty to die before then.

Grizalda · 02/06/2021 16:46

Coronations in history haven't been til the year after they actually took to the throne.

Grizalda · 02/06/2021 16:48

I must admit, when I saw "queens jubilee bank holiday announced" my first thought was hopefully it doesn't go the same way as Prince Philips 100th birthday celebrations Blush

MimsyBorogroves · 02/06/2021 17:07

Glad I'm not the only one who thought this. It was the second thought after "it'd better not be in the bloody school holidays" (school staff)

Xiaoxiong · 02/06/2021 17:16

I was thinking the same - could be a coronation date if worst came to worst. Sometimes the gap between becoming monarch and the coronation can be many months.

griz randomly, I am sitting here drinking tea out of a coronation mug from 1901. Edward VII became king on the day Queen Victoria died, 22 January 1901, and was crowned that summer (it was supposed to be in June, which is the date on my mug, but he got sick so it was postponed to August!) They used the date of the original coronation for a "solemn service of intercession" for the king's health, and all the international guests who were supposed to have gone to the coronation went to that instead and then went home, missing the real coronation!

NameyNameyNameChangey · 02/06/2021 17:20

If so...
We get even more, I believe. The state funeral would surely be a BH. Then a coronation.
Win win.

(I, of course, want our Maj to live as long as possible)

SwedishEdith · 02/06/2021 17:26

Well, I hadn't realised there was an extra BH so that's good. If she's like her mum, she's got a good half decade, at least, in her yet.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 02/06/2021 17:36

Exactly. The Queen Mum made it to 102?
I'd certainly take a punt at this not being a problem.

adawong · 02/06/2021 17:42

She's 95, so there is a higher chance of her not making it than if she was 10 years younger.
No shit Sherlock

Maireas · 02/06/2021 17:42

@AdaColeman

Coronation perhaps?

Surely Charlie has got all his plans ready to go!

Nope. Unless they're already rehearsing it, which is highly unlikely.
BertiesShoes · 02/06/2021 17:53

@MimsyBorogroves

It was the second thought after "it'd better not be in the bloody school holidays" (school staff)

Well given that half term always falls in the week of the late May bank holiday (which is moving to 2nd June next year, with 3rd added as extra BH), then yes it will most likely be the school holidays.

The precedent was set for the golden jubilee in 2002, when the bank holiday was moved to Monday 3rd June and half term followed on.

I remember as we spent the long weekend with relatives and had a family party for DD, whose 2nd birthday was just after the bank holiday Monday (she turns 21 this weekend). We spent the rest of the week in Norfolk and were actually visiting Sandringham on her birthday!

NoKnit · 02/06/2021 21:15

Arrange your wedding for another weekend just to be on the safe side? 😊

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 03/06/2021 07:51

😂

Sparklingbrook · 03/06/2021 07:56

This hadn't even crossed my mind at all. I don't think it would be cancelled for anything, once it's all arranged. it would just be a celebration of however many years on the throne.

I don't think coronations can be sorted hastily just to fill a BH. Grin
