Apparently, they're reopening as a coffee bar, no proper meals. I'll go somewhere else. Angry

I meant I miss woolworths the shop too

hatcoatscarfalcohol · 02/06/2021 20:28

Did you do your grocery shopping there or just use the cafe?

the80sweregreat · 02/06/2021 20:32

No, I shop in Tesco still , but the cafe was great and cheap. Then the coffee shop people took over and it was all ' skinny lattes ' and expensive prices and muffins!
I guess Sainsbury's will go the same way I bet.

Nietzschethehiker · 02/06/2021 20:48

Seeing the references to woolies has made me smile and remember my Dsis when asked by my ridiculously wonderful Gran what she wanted for her birthday she answered "Some smellies from woolies or boots ".

My very rural Gran who only ever shopped in kwik save after walking the 3 miles across fields to a bus stop interpreted that in a way only she could.

My Dsis opened a pair of hand knitted wooly boot slippers Grin love that memory

Toddlerteaplease · 02/06/2021 21:01

I didn't think they'd even re opened yet. My local ones have not.

the80sweregreat · 02/06/2021 21:53

They opened a big new Sainsbury's a few miles from us. Lovely huge cafe, was only open a few months and been shut for longer than it was ever open. Such a waste of space.

Homehaircuts · 02/06/2021 21:55

Tbh I didn't my think Sainsbury's will lose any sleep over it

goingtotown · 02/06/2021 22:11

Opening June 21st.

Comefromaway · 02/06/2021 22:25

I think Blackpool Woolies had a cafe too.

And round here we had the Normid Homemaker cafe (North Midland Co op)

prettylittlestar · 02/06/2021 22:52

No way!!! I love their meals! Good value and yummy.

HalzTangz · 02/06/2021 22:53

@EachandEveryone

I’m sat In Morrissons now and the menu has been slimmed right down. No small breakfasts or anything.
I had a small breakfast today in morrisns,it's the £5.50 one

And a fuckton of butter

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 04/06/2021 20:17

@hatcoatscarfalcohol I used to have breakfast or a coffee then do the shopping. I still do shop there every day. I needed that time to calm down after getting my 9yo son with ADHD to school.

My local Sainbury's is also reopening for teas, coffee, cakes, etc. I don't recall seeing anyone eating a meal there, just drinks and snacks.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 04/06/2021 20:48

The difference is that ours was always packed with people eating meals, particularly after school and breakfast at the weekend. Whole families used to go. We did until it became too stressful for one DC and too stimulating for the other. People used to travel for the meals.

Normid breakfast was fabulous! School holidays when you had to go to the supermarket with your mum made bearable!
osbertthesyrianhamster · 04/06/2021 20:56

Not profitable to them so they need to try a new business model.

AmyDudley · 04/06/2021 21:13

Our Sainsbury's always had a standard sized coffee listed as STD coffee - which used to put me off a bit.

😂 They need a new drinks menu!
newroundhere · 04/06/2021 21:23

@TheLovelinessOfDemons

The proper meals were extremely popular, throughout the day. I suspect that Sainsbury's make enough money not to care about profit from the café.

daisypond · 04/06/2021 21:25

I’ve never seen any supermarket with any sort of cafe, including Sainsbury’s. None I know of serve even drinks.

CorporeSarnie · 04/06/2021 21:28

That's a shame. Fond memories of walking to one near us when kids were babies for mostly a drink and a snack but later for lunches with toddlers. Don't live near enough to do that anymore but a shame as the kids would still love fish & chips etc. Hope mozzas don't go down that same route, that would really be a loss for older folks near all the ones I've visited (across three counties, all full of elderly people having their lunches).

BakeOffRewatch · 04/06/2021 21:35

Noooooo I’ve been waiting for Sainsbury’s cafes to open. We’ve got two in South London with huge car parks, they’re lovely and clean with well maintained toilets. A great place for mums with babies to meet.

I’ve been going to M&S cafe in same retail park, but it’s pricey and not the same, no fish and chips for under a fiver and so on. Im gutted.

The staff in Sainsbury’s are so nice too.

Whenever I went it was regular clientele of older people and mums with young kids, what a shame to lose somewhere warm, friendly and affordable to meet.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 04/06/2021 23:18

To all the pps worried about their local Sainsbury's café, it might be decided on an individual store basis. I hope so for other people's sake anyway.

I’ve never eaten in a supermarket or a shop cafe! I’m surprised at how many people do to be honest. If I’m hungry, I’d either eat before I went, buy something nice from said supermarket to eat at home or go out somewhere half decent to eat! My local Sainsburys has a Starbucks and the nearest tescos has its own tescos cafe which stinks of greasy hash browns. Never been into either, wouldn’t miss them (likely wouldn’t even notice) if they disappeared. I don’t drink tea/coffee though so the appeal of stopping off for one wouldn’t enter my head regardless of where I was.
OP just think to yourself that you’ve saved a couple of quid!
