Just wondered what hobbies people have. Mine is reading really, but looking for something new to do. I'm on a low budget. In winter I did a lot of knitting, but I've run out of ideas at the moment and am just not fancying it right now. I've grown a few things from seed. I've tried colouring but get bored quickly. I like making things, but am not very good. Diamond pictures are too fiddly. I did jigsaws for a while during lockdown but bored of that now Grin

I bullet journal....well I pour time into creating pretty weekly and monthly spreads, trackers and random lists, under the guise of organising my life.

I often make a knitting tracker, and reading list to helpfully combine all my hobbies.

Can be as high or low cost as you wish...pack of fineliners, a decent notebook, ruler. Washi tape, stencils, brush pens aren't essential but you pick up bits as you go. Can be as arty or not as you wish, if you can't draw, plenty of stencils, and pinterest ideas to copy.

Other ideas I suppose would be maybe scrapbooking, or you could branch out from knitting to sewing?

Depends if you're more of a something to fiddle with on the sofa, or retreat to craft room person.

More craft room/need a table based ones, would be things like card making, or maybe paint by numbers?

I quite enjoy the magazine Mollie Makes. It has lots of different craft projects in and usually comes with a craft kit each month. I like making little felt dolls for my daughter, modern calligraphy and cross stitch/embroidery. Etsy is great for modern embroidery and cross stitch patterns.

Seeline · 02/06/2021 12:23

I started cross stitching during lock down and really enjoyed that. You can get kits quite cheaply on line.

My main hobby is singing in a choir which is lovely because it is social too.

CuteOrangeElephant · 02/06/2021 12:23

Sewing! Though it can be cheap, it's definitely not cheap for me Grin .

I would love to try embroidery but don't want to get into another hobby. I think that can be quite cheap though.

LovelyGirlCompetition · 02/06/2021 12:29

I did Couch25k. Brilliant. Also started to learn Spanish via Duolingo but am on a break! Both free apps. Sunny weather, I love to read in the garden or do a bit of gardening.

FourEyesGood · 02/06/2021 13:24

I’ve just finished Couch25k and would definitely recommend it. I find running really enjoyable early in the morning and making Spotify playlists to run to is also really satisfying.
Also, reading is an excellent hobby in itself.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 02/06/2021 13:31

Another one whose main hobby is reading! Watching with interest.

Aprilwasverywet · 02/06/2021 13:33

Have quite gotten into gardening! Currently upcycling some wooden ladders and a stool for the garden!
Framed a lovely plant with a quick pallet frame!

Photography? Sign up for A year with my camera, it's free or the app us £5 a year.

I have a horse on part loan and take care of her and ride. I also open water swim which I love. So much nicer and more interesting than swimming lengths in a pool.
I am happiest when I am outdoors though, even in winter. I appreciate others may prefer inside hobbies like crafting etc.

Insert1x20p · 02/06/2021 13:53

CrossFit, sea kayaking and learning Russian using Duolingo ( I pay for it but there’s a free version too)

Hufflepuffsunite · 02/06/2021 13:57

I love reading too and recently became interested in bullet journals / scrapbooking (as I also love stationery). I've seen on Pinterest people combine the two - keeping a reading journal to track what they've read, review books, keep reading lists, creating collages inspired by what they've read. Quite a nice idea - I saw some examples that spanned a whole year and it must be a really nice thing to look back on.

nocoolnamesleft · 02/06/2021 14:31

This is Mumsnet. No one can tell you what the hobby is, as it would be " too outing"! Grin

Ikeatears · 02/06/2021 14:41

Genealogy. Kept my brain busy during the lockdowns and get very addictive, especially with the advent of commercial DNA testing.

crumbsnamechange · 02/06/2021 14:49

I have so many, it's a bit overwhelming at times! I certainly never got bored during lockdowns.

I am learning piano (bought myself a keyboard over lockdown) - loads of YouTube videos where I can play along to my favourite tunes. I'm not skilled at all, total beginner, but the easy (slowing down to half speed) videos are good to start with.

I ride my bike as often as I can during nice weather to the nearest rural(ish) areas for exercise.

I grow outdoor plants (also good exercise) using container pots and bagged compost as for years I didn't have access to a garden and am still in the habit of container gardening. After work and sleep, this takes up the majority of my time!

During winter I got really into those paint-by-number kits, very soothing.

I research family history using ancestry.co.uk's free subscription weekends/occasionally buy a month if I want to research a branch in particular.

I read a huge amount and am particularly into historical novels and autobiographies, what's nice is the BBC adaptations usually fit my interests (The Pursuit of Love is a current favourite of mine).

Couch25k was good but I think I overdid it; got a bad foot injury in Week 8 so have eased up on that.

Also used DuoLingo in the past as found it fun to get into competitions with strangers!

PC gaming - I've found a few I like based on boardgames I play.

CharlieChickenson · 02/06/2021 14:51

I've started watercolour painting from watching tutorials on YouTube.

elp30 · 02/06/2021 15:08

I've recently started jump rope. I built up to 100 jumps non-stop and now I am learning new techniques and tricks. It's freaking hard but I am enjoying it very much.

I'm also going to start roller skating. There are a few groups around my town where they meet to do skill training in empty parking lots, they bring ramps and then have a dj spin tunes for dancing. I am 50 so I'll be taking it very, very slow!

Blue4YOU · 02/06/2021 15:18

I e always been gardening obsessed and could spend all day doing it - but I am allergic to strong sun and hence summer needs to be evening only and I’m often knackered!
Also reading!
I’ve started painting in the last couple of months and really love it. I just paint in any medium (mostly watercolour but I prefer the look of acrylic) and I use photos as inspiration. I often don’t like the tutorial stuff on YouTube but it’s useful for advice and mistakes etc.

DustyMaiden · 02/06/2021 15:18

Painting, drawing, choir, reading.

Starbonnet123 · 02/06/2021 16:28

I really love crochet and with 4 grandchildren and 2 daughters they are always wanting blankets slippers etc , I love to read , garden , paint and sew. cooking And baking are also a nice way to chill and I'm back at the gym swimming and doing classes
I also have 2 dogs to walk and I work 3 days a week.
I love films and dare I say it, ironing, I love ironed bedding especially pillow cases . So watching a film while ironing is lovely 😊.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 02/06/2021 16:44

I collect hobbies!🤣

sewing, quilting, crochet, knitting, embroidery, swimming, walking, tap dancing, Lego, baking, learning languages, boardgames, chess, cards, playing on the guitar & piano, singing, dieting...

used to do extreme sports, but road rage during school runs satisfies some of my adrenaline rush needs now😁

I still want to get back to kayaking, rock climbing, target shootiing, ice skating and skiing.
I've tried water skiing, horse riding and archery - loved them, want to do all of them more!
Fencing, diving, surfing & sailing would be fun too.

I want to do everything! but not gardening. I'm shit at that

SionnachRua · 02/06/2021 16:47

Penpalling. All you need is some paper, envelope and a stamp. You can get creative with it - I've sent some heavily decorated stuff through the post - but it's not a requirement. And the friendships you build are very special.

soberfabulous · 02/06/2021 16:48

Reading is my absolute number one favourite thing too.

I run.

I'm learning to play tennis (this is not cheap though!)

I'm slowly learning a language with a tutor once a week.

I created and host a podcast.

I thought I was pretty boring but now I see it written down I'm quite busy.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 02/06/2021 16:51

I make dollshouses and furniture. 1:48 scale is cheapest to make as it's so small. I get most of my kits from here.

www.petitepropertiesltd.com/

But watch out its horribly addictive.

Quail15 · 02/06/2021 17:11

I learned to cross stitch during my maternity leave two years ago. I knit, read, bake ( I have tried learning to decorate cakes with mixed success ), and grow my own fruit and vegetables.
I took on an allotment last year (£49 rent per year) and I've just started maternity leave again so I will be focusing on getting the rest of it cleared and something growing. I don't spend a lot of money on it other than the rent - just packets of seeds and a lot of time.
