Just wondered what hobbies people have. Mine is reading really, but looking for something new to do. I'm on a low budget. In winter I did a lot of knitting, but I've run out of ideas at the moment and am just not fancying it right now. I've grown a few things from seed. I've tried colouring but get bored quickly. I like making things, but am not very good. Diamond pictures are too fiddly. I did jigsaws for a while during lockdown but bored of that now Grin

I dabble, so there’s abandoned craft stuff all over the house (and some very dodgy makes).

However, the ones that have stuck are:

Reading
Writing (currently doing a Creative Writing MA)
Running (started with C25K, currently hitting 11k)
Open water swimming
Resistance training
Gardening, particularly growing veg from seed
Yoga
Meditation
Journaling

Those are the things that I never, ever have to force myself to do (ok, maybe the resistance training) and that get me into that lovely flow state.

I love paper crafting, and make cards using die cutting, stamping, and colouring with alcohol markers. I make all our Christmas cards and make birthday cards etc for family and friends.

I also try my hand at watercolour painting for some of my cards, mostly loose florals. There are lots of Youtube videos to help you learn. I am a rank beginner and no artist but I like to try.

Right now I have a paint by number on the go as I can really relax outside and just listen to the birdsong not having to think. It's my first paint by number but so far it is enjoyable if a bit geeky.

I also like growing herbs and things like rocket on our balcony.

Gardening! Can be as cheap and easy as you want it to be and you can always find something that needs doing if you need a break from life. I only started in March after going in antidepressants in December and its really helped me x

@Medusastill

Canstandtherainydays If you are after strumming along to songs... look at JustinGuitar website... free and takes you from absolute beginner... it's really good. I love classical music cos I'm an old fogey so have had to learn to read music etc but I use Justin to learn to play fun easy stuff ..you don't have to read music at all!

3 years ago my hands just could not do it... now they can and it just took time :)

Thanks, I'll have a look Smile

To be honest they are woodlice, I have 20 different species and morphs (we are a zoologist and an environmental scientist living together, we get into strange things in our home)

Well done *@Medusastill* .. I have a guitar I can't play. I've tried learning, but just can't get the hang of it.
My OH is using a pc game called Rocksmith to teach himself the base. It's great if you are more of a visual learner. It has songs that you play along with. It's for guitar or base. You plug your guitar into your pc.
Cantstandtherainydays · 04/06/2021 17:52

I don't think I am a visual learner. I don't have a guitar I can plug in.

I’m having to focus on crochet for a couple of weeks (twins off school, scalpel blades and my twins don’t make a good combo) and I’m really missing paper cutting. It’s so satisfying - i am really slow at crochet and knitting and it’s takes so long to finish something!

Willdoitlater · 06/06/2021 14:16

Learn to play the recorder properly? Very cheap and easy.

CoRhona · 06/06/2021 16:58

I started a degree with the Open University in a subject I'm really interested in - absolutely love it (goes well with a love of reading too...Wink).

What are you crocheting? I started a blanket the years ago Shock , every now and again I pick it up and do a bit, but I'm bored of it really and only halfway through!

I’ve been designing some patterns so working on the sample - just finished the baby blanket version but made a giant error with the larger reverse colour one and had to rip half of it out. Struggling to finish it again now 😬

I love reading!! I also picked up cross stitching during lockdown and love it, and have recently started knitting!!

annfox · 24/07/2021 20:05

Ohhh, I feel your pain! I couldn't find a hobby for a long time, too. AND after the birth of my daughter, I did'nt understand HOW people could find free time??? So, I faced two problems at once: I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t know when.
But in fact, it turned out that it is quite possible to find at least half an hour in your schedule (for example, while the child is sleeping or when they are playing). When my daughter was 6 months old, I realized that I can't do nothing and started crafting and painting. I also had the feeling that I liked it, but didn't see good results. Later, I realized this wasn't the case. The problem was in not having enough imagination (and probably inspiration), so I started to search for different training videos, articles and blogs of other artists. I began to surf ideas on the Internet and it became easier. Here is one example of a good blog, there are ideas and tutorials (I almost didn't have any skills) and just some inspiration: diysguide.com/how-to-paint-the-ocean-with-watercolors/

I love being by the sea.
What about coastal walking?
Pokemon while you walk?
Shell identification?
Seascape/landscape painting?
Photography?
Kite flying? Kite boarding? Kite surfing?
Surfing? In a wetsuit...
Take some knitting and sit on the beach?
Yoga? Dance?
Try a few things. See what you enjoy.

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/07/2021 21:33

Gym, choir, walking, gardening. I live in Derbyshire - lots of stunning countryside on the doorstep.

penguinwithasuitcase · 24/07/2021 21:38

Pottery.

I had a complete arse of a morning today, was just about ready to cry – and then sat down at my wheel and it all just floated away.

Rebornagain · 24/07/2021 22:29

Breeding fish very interesting

LadyCatStark · 25/07/2021 09:33

Paddleboarding and running 🥰.

smallstepsonly · 25/07/2021 11:47

@SionnachRua

Penpalling. All you need is some paper, envelope and a stamp. You can get creative with it - I've sent some heavily decorated stuff through the post - but it's not a requirement. And the friendships you build are very special.
How do you get a pen pal?
Gr3atC1rcle · 25/07/2021 11:56

Reading
Cross stitch
Embroidery
Gardening
Jigsaws

Fckingfuming · 25/07/2021 13:32

Crochet, needle felting, reading, but they're on the back burner at the moment as I keep Royal pythons and have a clutch of eggs ready to hatch next month, so they're priority at the moment as it's the first time I've bred them.

Looking for a hobby, tell me about yours?
Ifixfastjets · 25/07/2021 22:33

Wow fckingfuming.
That's a beautiful python.
Mine died a year ago. Sad not sure what of. She was nearly 2 years old
