Just wondered what hobbies people have. Mine is reading really, but looking for something new to do. I'm on a low budget. In winter I did a lot of knitting, but I've run out of ideas at the moment and am just not fancying it right now. I've grown a few things from seed. I've tried colouring but get bored quickly. I like making things, but am not very good. Diamond pictures are too fiddly. I did jigsaws for a while during lockdown but bored of that now Grin

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

I make dollshouses and furniture. 1:48 scale is cheapest to make as it's so small. I get most of my kits from here.

www.petitepropertiesltd.com/

But watch out its horribly addictive.

Loving this! Funnily enough I just ordered a kit for a tiny house, but it's from China. Those are far superior! Not sure if I've got enough patience, but they're very tempting!

Thanks for all the replies everyone, keep them coming!

I'd love to bake more, especially unusual things, but never have the ingredients in when I fancy baking Blush or can't find a recipe I like. I'd love to get into bread baking too, keep meaning to, but I don't eat white bread and haven't had much success with wholemeal seed loaves, which are my favourite.

I can't run for physical reasons, but try to walk a bit nearly every day.

I do have a penpal, although we correspond on WhatsApp.

I definitely don't have green fingers, but had some success with tomatoes and lettuce last year, so I'm trying again this year.

Btw I'm not saying all kits from China are inferior, just the one I ordered is a bit flimsy, but then it was very cheap.

Paddle boarding absolutely love it 😊

MustardRose · 03/06/2021 14:45

I am learning the guitar, go to adult beginner ballet classes and I also collect small plastic dinosaurs (don't laugh).

Mulsteadly · 03/06/2021 14:49

I recently started getting into blending essential oils, to use in an oil burner/diffuser and sometimes mix into unscented bath oil or moisturiser. It's really fun! You can spend a fair bit of cash very easily though

Pandoraslastchance · 03/06/2021 14:49

I cross stitch, crochet and knit. I also dabble in bullet journaling but i only do pages to track my craft projects.

I garden but have run out of space currently.

OH is teaching himself to play the bass guitar.

Ah, I also went to adult ballet classes for a while until my knees gave in!

I have lots of hobbies but my favourite is paper cutting - takes a fraction of the time of the others I do (knitting, crochet, embroidery etc) and is so cheap in comparison too (once you have the basic tools which are cheap, it’s paper and scalpel blades and that’s it).

It’s really easy - I am not very artistic or good at drawing but I love paper cutting, and you can make so many different things.

If anyone would like to try, I have a very little business selling kits and templates - you can find them here: www.CreativismUK.Etsy.com :)

Thanks, some lovely things in your shop.

I tried making origami for a while but got frustrated once I moved on to more difficult things.

With baking, have you tried alternative flours? Spelt bread is much easier than wheat wholemeal for example, and you can use just wholemeal spelt flour (you don't have to mix it with white).

Indoor hobbies... crochet? Weaving (could be willow (expensive if you don't have a local source), paper, straw, etc)?

Do you have basic tools? If so, make a bench/plant pots from a pallet (usually can get these free from DIY stores if you ask). Great way to get into woodwork as if you screw up you just get another free pallet and start again! Lovely summer hobby to do outside.

Am also watching this thread with interest for new ideas for me!

SinkGirl · 03/06/2021 15:57

Thanks @Cantstandtherainydays - I don’t think I could do origami, can’t get my head round it! I do like working on really tricky stuff now like maps, layered photo pieces and stuff, but it’s good to be able to knock out a gift or a card in an hour or two when needed!

Rizzoli123 · 03/06/2021 16:01

@Seeline

I started cross stitching during lock down and really enjoyed that. You can get kits quite cheaply on line.

My main hobby is singing in a choir which is lovely because it is social too.

It's like were twins. I have been stitching for ages though. I also love put choir group. Just waiting for our sessions to be back in person not on line

Not sure where I'd get wholemeal spelt flour here, live in a tiny town. How long would it need kneading and to rise?

I've tried crocheting, but prefer knitting. I'm sure I'll start again in winter, but find my fingers get too sweaty and hence the needles/hook sticky in summer Blush

I have very basic tools but not sure where I'd get pallets around here, not many big stores. What do you make out of them? Could I make a garden sofa for example? I'd love that! I don't have a drill, but have a hammer and screwdrivers, nails, screws.

I thought about journaling, but I'm not very arty and have no idea what I'd put in there. I've looked on pinterest but not sure how I'd adapt them to my needs/ boring life Blush

Lido swimming. I love being able to swim outside in all weathers.

Blueberry40 · 03/06/2021 18:28

I would say reading tops my hobby list as well but other things I’ve started recently are clay work (making things like ring dishes and decorative bowls), paper flowers (using Italian crepe paper because it has a good stretch to it) and I also tried the Bakedin subscription box for a while which was fun but don’t have enough time atm. It’s about £13 a month and comes complete with all the main ingredients and instructions on how to bake something amazing, a bit more challenging than a recipe I would usually pick out so encouraged me to step out of my baking comfort zone!

I love the thought of making things out of clay, but only have a drop down dining table to work on. What clay did you use and what tools would you say you need?

Ah, if I had a lido nearby, I'd swim there too. I live by the sea, but it's very cold for swimming 🥶

I started learning to play classical guitar 3 years ago and have recently started learning piano (via Pianote..online and by far the best I have tried )

I was learning Italian too but that's on the backburner ( my DB is marrying a lovely Italian but the big wedding in Italy isn't happening so no rush)

Cantstandtherainydays · 03/06/2021 21:08

Well done @Medusastill .. I have a guitar I can't play. I've tried learning, but just can't get the hang of it.

Canstandtherainydays If you are after strumming along to songs... look at JustinGuitar website... free and takes you from absolute beginner... it's really good. I love classical music cos I'm an old fogey so have had to learn to read music etc but I use Justin to learn to play fun easy stuff ..you don't have to read music at all!

3 years ago my hands just could not do it... now they can and it just took time :)
