Just curious.

Do you usually have a rough budget for what you will spend on presents? If so, I’d give that as cash.

kowari · 01/06/2021 21:03

@bonfireheart

I would say £100. DD turned 13 last week and just the trainers she wanted cost £70! I tell you it's a shock how much kids things cost.
Things for teens don't have to cost that much though. It's about what they value. DS is 15 and the trainers he wanted cost £30.
Sparkletastic · 01/06/2021 21:03

£100 and a few presents to open

HazyDaisy123456 · 01/06/2021 21:03

£100 cash if you can afford it.

kowari · 01/06/2021 21:04

@Worriesome

I agree with you *@MadMadMadamMim*
Me too
honeybuns007 · 01/06/2021 21:07

What would you normally spend on him?

rosesarered321 · 01/06/2021 21:07

£50

SoLongSister · 01/06/2021 21:14

I don't think it always depends on what you can afford. At 15 I think I gave £100 because I think that's adequate and not based on whether I can afford more.

BrilliantBetty · 01/06/2021 21:17

£100 is a good amount. But I'd also get a couple of small bits to open, probably some clothes because kids/teens always seem to need more clothing.

user1487194234 · 01/06/2021 21:17

We normally spend £300 on birthdays
Would give him that much cash
Maybe £150 and save the rest for next time he wants something x

mrsdavegrohl · 01/06/2021 21:18

£250/300 is my budget for kids birthday. Both currently pre teen

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 01/06/2021 21:24

£500.

(Not really, just wanted to join in with this thread where the increments are steadily going up, like some bizarre auction).

Sorry wouldn’t give him that much cash

£800!
Lucky44 · 01/06/2021 21:33

£30 plus about £5 sweets plus shop bought cake.
I give what I can afford which isn’t much but it is valued and appreciated

Campervanna · 01/06/2021 21:38

@Waxonwaxoff0

Depends what you can afford. DS about to turn 8 is getting about £250 of presents plus cake costing over £200 and a party costing £130ish.

For a 15 year old, I would probably give £300.

I thought pp saying cake would be £70 was over the top, but over £200!!! Just glad that I was able to make the cakes for my own kid’s birthdays, which mainly looked and tasted better than their friends expensive (but nowhere near £200) ones.
Pinuporc · 01/06/2021 21:46

I've only bought one professionally made birthday cake which was a 3 tier cake and cost £180, and was bloody delicious. It was for a significant birthday though . My DCs get home made ones.

NannyAndJohn · 01/06/2021 21:58

Depends what he's planning to use if for.

Saving up for something worthwhile, I'd be willing to give a bit more (~£50). Frittering it away on bits and bobs, a bit less (~£25).

Wegobshite · 01/06/2021 22:11

Depends - my DS is 27 😂 still lives at home works full time . On his last birthday last month I gave him £250 and some aftershave that he wanted
But he is my only son so Im not forking out money every few months on birthdays so I don’t mind
When he was in his teens he normally got presents - clothes trainers and £100 -£150 in cash

Lurleene · 01/06/2021 22:28

DS turned 15 during strict lockdown, we gave him £100 and I went wild with £10 in the Poundland chocolate aisle. You can get A LOT of chocolate in there for a tenner.

He was perfectly happy with that and saved that money and anything else he has acquired since then and just bought a guitar that he spent months looking for. I think just the feeling of having quite a bit of money to spend as he wished was a great present for him and he enjoyed the freedom of choosing how to spend it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/06/2021 22:31

@Campervanna I can't bake for shit. Anything I make would be a massive disappointment! I'd rather chuck money at it and get something decent.

That doesn't make sense - an 8 year old gets £250 and a 15 year old £300??
Timeisavirtue · 01/06/2021 22:37

£150... that’s our budget for birthdays. Wether we buy presents or give money!

Passthecake30 · 01/06/2021 22:40

£150

OldEvilOwl · 01/06/2021 22:42

£50 but he would also get a takeaway of choice and a few presents to open
