I am a support worker in mental health (outs self entirely)

Someone said a few weeks ago 'you are a glorified bum-wiper'

I would like to give them a thump and then take them to an adult acute inpatient hospital and support people who are acutely mentally unwell, suicidal, violent, sexually disinhibited, manic and psychotic. I will of course, help with personal care where needed.

She was not a friend, fwiw and never will be Grin

‘Why are you tired? All you do is sit colouring in all day.’

Year 1 teacher. I really wish I was colouring all day!

This made me laugh. I'd love to see them try and handle a room full of 5 year olds.
derxa · 02/06/2021 16:57

No horrible comments in real life but you know the comments on here if you say you're a farmer. Brexiteer, animal abuser, heartless Tory etc etc

Fnib · 02/06/2021 17:21

Carer. I love it, but it's tiring. It amused me when I suddenly became a hero to a couple of family members when previously they looked down on me a bit. I think I'm back to being looked down on now, but I don't care.

hopeishere · 02/06/2021 17:32

I always thought you were a bit thick.

My sister's SIL. She's a doctor and I have an arts degree. We were doing a quiz and I knew loads of answers (because I'm not thick!) and she was stunned. She was a bit tipsy though! Another friend caught my eye and we both inwardly eye rolled.

@RightOnTheEdge

Well I work in a Wetherspoon pub so you can probably imagine I've heard plenty of rude things.

Most of the horrid things have been from snooty twats on Mumsnet. There was a comment once from someone who said something like,
"People who work at Wetherspoons are too dumb to be trusted with knives"
I've also read on here that Wetherspoon staff are not known for their intelligence.

It got me down at the time to be honest Sad

Some people are so bloody rude 🤬. I’d bet a fare whack that those posters are ladies that lunch and live off their husbands anyway. Anyone who actually works for a living should understand all jobs are necessary and the people doing them deserve respect.
TownTalkJewels · 02/06/2021 17:56

When do you think you’ll get a proper job?

I worked for a charity at the time.

FloconDeNeige · 02/06/2021 17:57

I’m a pharmaceutical scientist with a PhD in chemistry but apparently that just makes me a lab monkey!

JeffVaderneedsatray · 02/06/2021 18:02

I'm a TA.
After covering my class for my Class Teacher one day I was told by one of the kids that "Miss, you're almost good enough to be a real teacher"
I frequently cover whole classes and am frequently told I should train to be a 'real teacher' because I'm 'good enough'...
Yes, I know, I was one. It nearly killed me.

TiptopJ · 02/06/2021 18:10

Im was a cashier in a bank and whilst I had nothing as bad as some of these on here I had so many people just ask me 'aren't you bored doing this all day?'. I was always polite and helpful to every customer and for someone to just dismiss my work as boring and quite obviously beneath them was so rude.

PollyDarton1 · 02/06/2021 18:41

@spiderlight

I proofread academic material (mostly theses and research papers) for international suthors/students for whom English is not their first language. Someone said recently 'Can't you just use the Word spell checker?'
I proof read too, and get that all the time.
LawnFever · 02/06/2021 18:46

I used to be a PA, I really enjoyed my job and it had loads of great perks, a (now ex) friend said I was ‘just a secretary’ - clearly intended as an insult as if there was even anything wrong with being a secretary anyway, which there isn’t Confused

BadgertheBodger · 02/06/2021 19:13

I’m an estate agent so I can’t actually list all the horrible rude things people have said about my job as it would take all night. Search any estate agent thread on MN for a flavour.

Ragoo · 02/06/2021 19:19

"You wipe people's arses"

I'm a student mental health nurse. Prior to that, support worker.

TheRedShoes75 · 02/06/2021 19:26

I’m a solicitor. I cannot count the number of times I’ve politely smiled at the standard gag about how I must enjoy soliciting.

People always assume I get paid a fortune too....hahahaha, no.

DrCoconut · 02/06/2021 19:26

HE lecturer. I have a huge salary, more holiday than work and spend my life indoctrinating the young with woke leftie claptrap according to some.

Yup, people falling over themselves to tell you what a hero and a good person you were this time last year, but who were always quite dismissive of the 'unskilled' job you did up until that point.
KitKat1985 · 02/06/2021 19:36

Mental health nurse. Once got asked dismissively by a general nurse why I hadn't decided to train as a 'proper' nurse instead.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 02/06/2021 19:45

I'm an office manager and the bookkeeper/credit controller. I nipped to the local coffee shop to do a run for everyone, the owner of it said 'I used to love when I was younger and your job is just to do shitty stuff like get coffees'.

PiccalilliChilli · 02/06/2021 19:46

Customer Service Supervisor running a tube station in London. Tho I rarely supervise anyone because of job cuts

Men usually walk straight past me to a junior colleague and ask them a question even if I'm standing much closer. Or they've asked me a question, decided it wasn't the right answer and gone to ask it again of a male colleague.

I get "cheer up love!" and "smile, it may never happen!" Which grinds my gears.

A lot of people say, "I've seen you get paid £60k a year to stand on the barrier" (thank you Evening Standard) when they don't know what we do, like access the track to assist an operator following a "one under", or pull people off trains after fainting and then giving first aid, or emptying and accounting for tons of cash with only a tiny margin of error allowed. We've broken up fights, talked people out of committing suicide, and dealt with bombings (successful or not). Besides, I don't earn £60k. More like £42k.

I'm a dentist so pretty much every single patient comes in and says the hate me Grin

They will regale me with a story about how a dentist put their knee on their chest (which has never happened because it doesn't work) and they were there for 4 hours in the chair

I'm a butcher, I'm money grabbing. I enjoy hurting people
'Bet you get off on this' one man said to me as I was extracting his tooth. No, I really don't get off on removing a grotty tooth from some sweaty 50yr old man
Dentists are liars. I'm purposefully making people suffer, I like making patients suffer etc etc.

I love my dentist! My teeth seem to have started to disintegrate in the last couple of years as I got to a 'certain age' and he's the one who's taken the pain away (yes, eventually, but once it's been done the pain is gone!) And ensured I look half decent when I had my front tooth recently knocked out by a patient (not as bad as it sounds was an accident!) And has done so under very trying circumstances. I'm not fond of going because I normally end up in more pain immediately after treatment because the areas been messed about with, but I'd be in pain and looking awful if it wasn't for mine right now. Dentists are definitely under rated 😁

I love my dentist, OrangeSharked! He is kind, calm, and I certainly never get the impression he "gets off" on dental work, even if I don't exactly enjoy getting it done. I am sure lots of your patients love you too, but they probably think it would be inappropriate to tell you. Wink

I've worked as a translator and of course been told that Google could do it just as well and for free.

Oh add me to the dentist-love! I've had a run of nine appointments recently and it involved a LOT of work including several extractions in one go. She was kind, gentle and thorough and the results are amazing (credit to any dental technicians out there too) and all on the NHS. She's even inspired me to refer myself to a stop smoking programne.

Take a bow dentists ❤

Civil servant - ex DWP now within the courts, both roles phone based. No nasty comments from anyone I know, but the callers could come out with some gems! I’ve ruined a lot of Christmases, I’m a terrible person and my current employers are money grabbers and corrupt...

I do get told I’m on good money (ha!) and must get a nice pay rise each year (haaaa!)

Hairbrush123 · 02/06/2021 23:08

“It’s not real work what you’re doing” - I was working in a supermarket at the time. If only they knew what I had to do every shift!
