I am a support worker in mental health (outs self entirely)

Someone said a few weeks ago 'you are a glorified bum-wiper'

I would like to give them a thump and then take them to an adult acute inpatient hospital and support people who are acutely mentally unwell, suicidal, violent, sexually disinhibited, manic and psychotic. I will of course, help with personal care where needed.

She was not a friend, fwiw and never will be Grin

My sister, whom I deeply respect and love, used to say that people who worked in customer services in a call center especially were robots, devoid of intelligence, idiots who simply do the job because this is the best and only thing they could possibly do. That was my job and it deeply hurt my feelings.

She had a change of circumstances recently and ended up working in customer services in a call center. She had to quit after a year because her mental health suffered and she said that people treated her as if she was stupid and told her that she was an incompetent idiot. Everything she used to think of me.

Hmm 🤔

Ooof. I'm a florist and I've had plenty of the "this is what happens when you don't do well at school" type snide remarks over the years.

But the most annoying is " Oh, I'd LOVE to do your job! Playing with flowers is SUCH FUN!"

You try getting up at 4 to be at the market at 5 then do a full day till 7 pm without sitting down and see how you get on. It's an incredibly physical job ( well mine is, anyway!)
About 70% of my work is buying, stock taking, pricing, admin, preparing quotes, consultations with clients, site visits, marketing and social media. Actually making and selling bouquets is a relatively small part of the job but people persist in thinking we just waft around all day with a trug of lavender over our arm.
We occasionally take on people for who want to change careers. They never last the week. And they ALWAYS take umbrage at having to sweep the floor. Hmm

TA here. Not clever enough to be a teacher. Not a ‘proper teacher’ so don’t have to do what I ask (from a 6 year old). All I do is sit around and read with the kids.

I used to be a tax specialist for hmrc before kids though, so that was even more unpopular. (I got some great threats back then, including ‘I know where you live’ and ‘I’m going to burn your house down’)
I think it’s sad how people can be so dismissive of jobs they don’t understand - for many jobs that people see as ‘beneath’ them, they have no real understanding of how hard the job can be!!

witheveryheartbeat · 02/06/2021 06:24

Being a teacher, you get it all. An ex's dad even said to me "those who can: do. Those who can't: teach."

Hopefully this pandemic has shown that we should value many more jobs than we used to. People on this thread have mentioned a range of jobs, from bar work, call centre work and even floristry. But in the last 16 months society has complained about not being able to go to coffee shops, bars, restaurants etc, been disappointed about weddings being cancelled (and want florists to be available when the date is rescheduled!), been thankful they can get to Sainsbury's and so on for food, still wanted to be able to speak to someone on the phone when they've needed to book in essential work, relied on delivery drivers for takeaways/internet orders etc. It would be great to think the snobby remarks will lessen as a result of us realising that it really does take all types of job to make society function.

Patient transport- oh you’re just a taxi service then? If only!

Once arrived on a ward to transfer a stretcher patient to another hospital to hear the staff nurse tell the patient that their taxi was here! She was soon told what we actually do, what we have to put up with when discharges haven’t been assessed properly and the amount of abuse we get when we don’t arrive on time!

newtb · 02/06/2021 09:29

Am retired but get blamed for everything. Accountant.

OnGoldenPond · 02/06/2021 12:57

Not so much what they said but what they did in my case.

This was years ago when I was not long out of university and still training in my job.

Was at a party with DH and met up with a group of people he had been at university with. Chatted to one who was an actor and regaled me with tales of his exciting thespian career. Was a bit up himself to be honest. He eventually stopped to draw breath and asked what job I do. I told him.

He gave me a hard stare, said not a word and simply stood up, walked away and studiously avoided me the rest of the evening. Shock

Would anyone care to hazard a guess what my job is?

I don’t know why this made me laugh so much. Maybe I am imagining Miranda’s mother saying it?

Iamthewombat · 02/06/2021 13:05

I thought that actors loved EVERYBODY, darling.

My guess is drama therapist. Using the sacred craft for non-dramatic purposes.

OnGoldenPond · 02/06/2021 13:13

@Iamthewombat I think he was "resting" at the time! Grin

Though to be fair he's the only actor I've met who was so up himself, most have been really lovely ( I have to say that DD is training to be one! Wink)

OnGoldenPond · 02/06/2021 13:14

Oh sorry forgot to respond to your guess!

Sadly not, I'm nowhere near creative enough for that.Blush

PollyDarton1 · 02/06/2021 13:17

I am a Technical Author.

Apparently all I do is write things and can spell okay.

Never mind the getting to know literally ever last code in the system, despite never doing a IT/Dev/Architecture degree, and having to regale that in laymen's terms. Oh and being the only fucker that does it in the entire 1000 employee company.

Fuck that noise.

spiderlight · 02/06/2021 13:19

I proofread academic material (mostly theses and research papers) for international suthors/students for whom English is not their first language. Someone said recently 'Can't you just use the Word spell checker?'

OnGoldenPond · 02/06/2021 13:29

The job that so mortally offended this guy was accountant!

Everybody hates us Sad

TommyShelby · 02/06/2021 13:34

‘You’re just a phone monkey’ was the best one spat at me.

Ok love, that’s fine if you think that but you phoned me to fix your pc... if you think you can do it without me, crack on

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/06/2021 13:37

@spiderlight I had to write a dissertation in my second language. I for one very much value you and your fabulous colleagues Smile

I’m a compliance caseworker for HMRC - nobody likes paying taxes do they? Think the worst was how do I sleep at night taking food out of children’s mouthes 🥴 I tell people I do admin now 😂

CthulhuChristmas · 02/06/2021 14:11

When I was a HLTA doing specialist SEN support and intervention groups I once got told that anyone could do my job because I 'just play with kids and wash paint pots'. Not quite!

Wegobshite · 02/06/2021 14:24

From the other side
I recently told the social worker who is insisting that my elderly father could go back home with a care package and
“ help from the family .
This is a man who can barely walk, falls over every day , only has use of one hand extremely poor eyesight diabetic COPD and is on his 7th week in in a renablement centre after 9 weeks in hospital and even the care manager agree that he’s should go into a care home after assessing him on a home visit .
I asked her if she really believes my father can go and life back home then she’s is thick as dogs shit and that she really really needs to retain into a career that doesn’t have someone well being & health at stake
I suggested maybe a road sweeper or bin collecter or the person who paints the yellow lines on the rd

Owlhandbag · 02/06/2021 14:29

Midwife here
Was asked "how can you bear to see women in agony every day? You must be mad, its weird. Urghh"
Strange person 😒
Love my job thanks 😄

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 02/06/2021 15:09

I was an enemy of the people

GurkeyTurkey · 02/06/2021 15:11

I'm an optician, I get "Ooh I couldn't do this job, it's sooooo boring" on a regular basis. I've also been told I'm incompetent and a liar because I wouldn't do what they wanted, and also GPs and ophthalmologists think we're idiots. And XH used to say all I do is sit around drinking tea and eating biscuits all day, I'm lucky if I get a lunch break.

GurkeyTurkey · 02/06/2021 15:12

What do you do #nocaloriesinchocalate?
