I am a support worker in mental health (outs self entirely)

Someone said a few weeks ago 'you are a glorified bum-wiper'

I would like to give them a thump and then take them to an adult acute inpatient hospital and support people who are acutely mentally unwell, suicidal, violent, sexually disinhibited, manic and psychotic. I will of course, help with personal care where needed.

She was not a friend, fwiw and never will be Grin

As a PA my sister said I was someone’s bitch.

RedcurrantPuff · 01/06/2021 19:59

Some of these insulters are right cheeky bastards. I wonder what kind of stellar careers they have.

baldafrique · 01/06/2021 19:59

I've only ever had the comments about my job from men

Mynextname · 01/06/2021 20:00

I have been working as a midday supervisor for many years. People seem to dismiss the fact I actually work (albeit not many hours). I get "I didn't know you helped out at the school" or "when you get a job" ect. I have a degree but as a role it is very undervalued because it isn't many hours and it is not a professional role.

We attend to children's social and emotional issues including safeguarding. Some of these can be quite severe. We currently have full classes by ourselves too all for £9.25 an hour.

I previously had a professional job and got told once "o I thought you would do something better than that."

You can't win so just do what makes you happy.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 01/06/2021 20:02

@ComplaintsComplaintsComplaints I actually have no idea. It must have been because I was younger. If someone said it to me now I’d probably turn violent

bellalou1234 · 01/06/2021 20:05

I work in mental health inpatients op.. I often get you.must be mental to work there 🤔🙄

I manage a coffee shop, worst one was when I saw a customer and waved at him whilst I was stopped at some traffic lights.
The next day he came in for his coffee and said he ‘wouldn’t have thought I could afford a big fancy car on my minimum wage monkey job’ I said that I don’t get paid minimum wage and he responded with me being overpaid for doing something as simple as pushing buttons and washing up all day.
It pissed me off so much that I told him that if the size of my car impressed him so much he should see the size of my house and then asked him if he wanted a job application form. Grin

‘Not a proper nurse’ is the most common.

I’m a mental health nurse and couldn’t do my job without people like you @NoEffingWaytoSurvive

PASStheCAKEandCHOC · 01/06/2021 20:09

I was a barista . And I mistakenly make the wrong drink for a very rude regular

He said, (after me saying, I do apologise I'll change it right away.)
Oh ffs, it takes 1 brain cell to make a coffee, I guess your lacking that, how hard can I be.
I replied. Well you could use your one brain cell to make a coffee at home, but instead you come in here every day moaning at us about everything and anything you can possibly think to moan about. If it's that bad sod off elsewhere.
I may or may not have also said sarcastically 'don't choke on it' when I passed his drink.
He tried to complain.
My manager brought me lunch because she'd always wanted to confront him but the higher manager would have given her a warning.

He was vile. Every day he was rude. Targeted the women never the men

bellalou1234 · 01/06/2021 20:09

I get not a proper nurse too.. as a mental health nurse.. my dm even asked if I was a key worker wtf

DeathByMascara · 01/06/2021 20:10

It wasn't me, but was said to a friend of mine in my company. Years ago I worked abroad & had the bonus of being able to fly family or friends out to see me on the company dime. A friend came to see me and we went out with a colleague and his friend. Who asked my mate what she did, then sneered incredulously, turned to me and asked 'how did someone from Company X become friends with a nurse' as though it was the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard.

We left shortly after. It was cringeworthy, she thought so highly of herself. My mate was worth a dozen of her.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 01/06/2021 20:11

Stephen Fry once said on QI “It's becoming rapidly more clear, there are many people on earth who need to be killed and nearly all of them are management consultants.” Gee… thanks.

AntiWorkBrigade · 01/06/2021 20:11

Nothing really about my job, which is off as it’s one of those jobs that is widely disliked, but a few about my degree. I studied a foreign language, but not one of the popular ones like Spanish or French. I had someone tell me it was ‘all how to order ice creams on the beach’ before going on to boast about his son studying classics. Ridiculous. The skills learnt and tested on any decent modern or classical language course are the same. Except that you could actually use your language to order an ice cream if it’s a modern one!

Someone I was studying for a professional course with pulled a sad face when I mentioned what I’d studied before, and said ‘Oh dear, that’s not very academic is it!’ Would have been very rude had it come from someone who had done a degree that is considered especially academically rigorous, but the person in question had left school before A levels so their opinion wasn’t based on any experience of higher study at all.

MildredPuppy · 01/06/2021 20:16

'When are you going to go back to work after your redundancy'
I was back in work! Its school admin which has the dual prejudices of being 'just admin' and vaguely related to children which renders in non-work twice.

21Flora · 01/06/2021 20:16

In my mid 20s I managed a large country Estate of a few thousand acres which included a visitor attraction with tens of thousands of visitors a year. Whenever people had a complaint and I appeared they’d usually ask the nearest man (a car park attendant) to settle the matter instead of me so developed pretty thick skin to people patronising me.

However on one occasion when I told a wedding party and photographer that had turned up they couldn’t have their posed wedding pictures in the house they got very angry and all the men surrounded me in quite a threatening matter. When I refused to back down very kind groom said ‘look at the state of her, she couldn’t possibly be anyone’s manager’ and walked away shouting insults. People are delightful.

PixieDust28 · 01/06/2021 20:16

'You just suck up the salvia' yes, that's all I do.
I didn't study or have to pass numerous hard exams about radiology, anatomy etc (you only get 3 attempts to pass each exam with a pass rate of 75% plus or you're not seen as competent enough) and sit through numerous of observations with someone watching my every move and CQC checks just to suck up salvia.

I know every nerve in the head and neck so please do tell me again how I only suck up salvia 🤛🏼.

PixieDust28 · 01/06/2021 20:18

SALIVA **

Thank you auto correct Blush.

ab21 · 01/06/2021 20:28

Investment banker. There's the obvious rhyming slang for starters. Followed by the usual misunderstanding between retail and investment banking (no, I don't bank people's cheques and provide pound coins for float). At that point, you are single handedly responsible for the global financial crisis (despite being advisory only without no financing arm) and you do the work of the devil.

In fairness, I thought it almost impossible to be less liked than in my previous job as an auditor. Walking into a client at which point everyone dived into the loo or pretended to be on the phone did become quite amusing.

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 01/06/2021 20:30

@NoEffingWaytoSurvive I just want to thank you for doing your job. I have a mental illness and have been an inpatient many times over the years (far too many!), and it's always been the HCAs and OTs who have made the biggest difference and helped my stay on a ward more bearable- which in turn has honestly saved my life on more than one occasion. Tbh usually I would hardly notice if the psychiatrist didn't turn up to work- definitely not the case with support workers

CrumpetsForAll · 01/06/2021 20:31

Uni admin. Many academics are happy to tell me I’m a soulless bean counter or generally treat me like I’m really rather dim.

ChocolateHoneycomb · 01/06/2021 20:35

That a psychiatrist is ‘not a proper doctor’.
I think they would find it more than they bargained for!

Shotsshotsshots · 01/06/2021 20:35

Child snatcher, scum, murderer, evil, cruel, heartless.
Fairly sure you can guess my job.

I already knew all this but it is tough to hear when you've got into massive debt, worked really hard and dedicated your life to helping people.

jumpingjackbeans · 01/06/2021 20:39

What the hell are these people being rude about EYFS teachers and staff on about? They put in place the building blocks for all other learning. Your child can't get their degree if they can't read or add up, can they?!

As a parent of a reception age child I'm in awe of how mine has gone from being able to just sound out her letters with help in September to now being able to read a book by herself now. I mean, that's just amazing when you think about it, isn't it.

Hats off to you all. I couldn't be a teacher for any age group!

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 01/06/2021 20:45

@Hfjshdhs

My mum said to me...

‘I don’t tell my friends what you do because it doesn’t sound very impressive’.

I’m Head of Marketing at a FTSE 250.

@Hfjshdhs 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

What does she think you do, then?
