Why are people such lousy dirty lazy antisocial utter bastards?

Driving through a popular beach resort on my way to work this morning and the crap & litter and piled up rubbish absolutely everywhere was staggering.
Piles of rubbish clearly just tipped out of a car door...literally less than a foot from a huge bin with a huge open “Chuck in” open mouth every where.

Just why?
They brought it with them, why don’t they take it with them or bin it?
Do they not listen to HRH David Attenborough and his messages about throwing crap around the planet?

It’s up there with dog shit leavers, dirty dirty bastards.

If they posted large photos of animals and birds injured or killed by rubbish at these locations then these fuckers would be outraged due to the trauma to their kids. Yet - that may be the only way forward, shock tactics.

itsgettingwierd · 02/06/2021 08:11

Agree about public messaging.

I wish we had more police on the street and instant ability to fine or be out on a litter picking weekend and fined if you don't turn up.

The money from the fines can fund better waste collection.

I've always been a fan of putting fine against failure to follow by laws but using that money back into the particular system.

Fastforwardtospring · 02/06/2021 08:20

I live by the beach in a popular seaside town, it’s not the seagulls, we see family’s or groups pack up their belongings after a day without the rubbish, it gets left behind. Other occasions we’ve seen people eating their drive through MacDonalds, they drive off having opened the car door and left the bag of rubbish behind, I guess that may be rich pickings for the seagulls but if that was either put in the bin or even better taken home it wouldn’t happen. Makes my blood boil.

42isthemeaning · 02/06/2021 08:24

Disgusting behaviour! Im fortunate enough to live in a very beautiful rural part of Scotland. What's always puzzled me whilst out walking is finding dog poo bags hanging from branches / bushes? If you've gone to the trouble of bagging it, why not bin it or take it home?

drinkingwineoutofamug · 02/06/2021 08:30

Community service.
Instead of them doing a grass cut at a cemetery.
Orange jackets with a litter picker.
But I'm sure some human rights nutter would complain.
Not that it stops idiots from dropping litter but might send a message

If there's a bloody bin use it. If the bin is full take it home.
I went on a early dog walk at our local park with a bin bag and cleared disposable bbq , plastic bottles
And what's with the poo bag tree?

reprehensibleme · 02/06/2021 08:42

Deposits on bottles and cans.

Public information campaign including distressing photos of wildlife and farm animals impacted by awful human behaviour.
Ban on wild camping in Scotland and harsh fines and powers to seize vehicles/equipment etc.
Education programmes in schools/colleges.
Compulsory dog registration and microchipping.
Large on the spot fines.
Provision of more bins and bins emptied more frequently in busy areas.
It needs to become totally socially unacceptable to leave litter. We're not allowed to judge anyone for anything these days, and tbh, look where it's got us.

Abouttimemum · 02/06/2021 08:49

I agree OP.
Even where I live, there’s litter strewn all over the street. I’ve seen grown adults just throwing it in the ground. There’s plenty of bins.
It’s fucking disgusting. It makes where they live look like a shithole, so why do it!? No pride.

JMAngel1 · 02/06/2021 08:50

Oh god it wasn't Formby was it?
Shocking litter issue there - puts me off going tbh which gives me rage as we love the dunes.

Abouttimemum · 02/06/2021 08:52

Oh yes and the bloody dog owners that put the poo in a bag and then hang it on a tree. Arseholes.

Abouttimemum · 02/06/2021 08:55

I think there’s plenty of public information on littering. The don’t be a tosser one is particularly engaging. But I agree it needs to be on tv.

People just don’t give a shit that’s the problem, and then they rear children that also don’t give a shit. I don’t know how we get around that aside from on the spot fines.

Daleksatemyshed · 02/06/2021 08:55

When I was a child all bottles were glass and anybody could return them and get the deposit back. We used to make extra pocket money returning them. Maybe the bottle deposit returning will make this happen again Smile

NameyNameyNameChangey · 02/06/2021 09:02

I remember a thread on here once where people were defending people shitting on the beach, so....
YANBU, it's disgusting and selfish to litter.

bookh · 02/06/2021 09:15

@NameyNameyNameChangey the was an artist lady shared pictures on FB at weekend of a beautiful remote beach in Scotland and a rant about people leaving rubbish and shitting on the beach. People were defending the person there, she said the photos of that particular delight had been handed to the police.

Surfschooling · 02/06/2021 09:22

I agree. It's the same in Brighton. No problem through the winter but when the tourists come in the summer it's a mess. Maybe it's because they done TL I've here they don't care, I don't understand what goes through their heads. I saw a family get back in their car and empty their rubbish by the side of the road! Just who does that?

hilarymantlepiece · 02/06/2021 09:24

Anordinarymum

“Who the hell do you think is going to clear it all up I ask ??? ffs“

We’re at a seaside town, never seen it busier than this last weekend. Not just littering but hundreds of cars parked over the cycle lanes adjacent to the beach and dunes.

Our council has extra crews and trucks out at 6am clearing up the rubbish. Most local people avoid the beach on high days and holidays because it’s too crowded but we pay for the clean up 🙄
Why can’t people just take their rubbish home?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 02/06/2021 09:33

My family and friends when they have visited from Australia often comment on the litter. Fines were introduced I think, late sixties, big public info campaign. I remember walking all the way from school carrying an apple core, terrified that if I dropped it, the police would swop down and fine me. Start with the kids, get them shaming grown ups.

MrsAudreyAlfredRobertsOBEHmm · 02/06/2021 09:39

Near us it's definitely a combination of humans and seagulls. The well meaning people prop rubbish up against a full bin, then the seagulls trash it
For once, I can't blame the council, they try but there's only so much they can do
Get rid of the bins, put horrific signs up of animals in distress because of the rubbish left, along with signs to take all rubbish home

SleepingStandingUp · 02/06/2021 09:46

@LubaLuca

Driving back from the seaside yesterday we were caught in a little traffic jam in a residential area. The passenger in the car in front chucked a handful of rubbish (napkins, wrappers and receipts) from her window. DH got out, picked it up and posted it back through her window onto her lap Grin People are awful sometimes. You can only blame seagulls up to a point.
I love your husband
SleepingStandingUp · 02/06/2021 09:49

Because people are ignorant bad lazy.

Took the kids to the park yesterday. Several empty picnic benches unusable because of litter left around, bins 100 yards away.

My 5 yo knows rubbish goes in the bin / moms bag so frankly there's no excuse.

woodhill · 02/06/2021 10:45

@SkintSingleMother

But in the UK people don't see public spaces as being the same as their homes. There are long standing historical and cultural reasons for that which aren't going away any time soon. And those reasons will only become more entrenched as long as we have such a piecemeal and incoherent approach to waste collection and disposal at both local and national levels.
I don't really understand this, we were always discouraged from dropping litter and there were adverts I think in the 70s
oneglassandpuzzled · 02/06/2021 10:50

I think people used to be more conscientious but two things happened. The IRA bombing campaign meant litter bins were removed for years, and then festivals encouraged people to leave their rubbish where they dropped it. So somehow a whole generation believes someone will clear up after them.

SkintSingleMother · 02/06/2021 11:13

@woodhill campaigns don't reach everyone and it takes time to undo long standing cultural entrenchment.

Several pps have referenced bins being removed over fears of bombings in the 1980s. So that was down to a civil war provoked by the UK government, and their response was to not only refuse to clean up their back yard but also to leave the shit in their front yard as well. Ofc people don't make the explicit connection but it's just one example of the British approach to public spaces, liability and accountability.

woodhill · 02/06/2021 13:01

Thanks for your explanation.

NameyNameyNameChangey · 02/06/2021 13:05

I don't think a lack of bins is the problem. People could just carry their shit home and get rid of it, if they cared.
They just don't care, in the main.

RedSquirrelsAreAwesome · 02/06/2021 13:15

Perhaps they should start the equivalent of a Britain’s most wanted poster campaign but for litter bugs, with giant pictures showing offenders and offering rewards for people to report them. 🤔
