Why are people such lousy dirty lazy antisocial utter bastards?

Driving through a popular beach resort on my way to work this morning and the crap & litter and piled up rubbish absolutely everywhere was staggering.
Piles of rubbish clearly just tipped out of a car door...literally less than a foot from a huge bin with a huge open “Chuck in” open mouth every where.

Just why?
They brought it with them, why don’t they take it with them or bin it?
Do they not listen to HRH David Attenborough and his messages about throwing crap around the planet?

It’s up there with dog shit leavers, dirty dirty bastards.

@imaginethemdragons

Excuse me! I do not drop any crap anywhere ever.

I grew up in Germany where littering is an absolute no no 100% no one drops litter at all ever.

I stand by my opening post, dirty lousy bastards.

Agree 100% with cardboard cut outs of HRH Sir David Attenborough at every beauty spot in the country. Looking stern though , his stern stare I imagine to be very powerful.

I remember going to Germany. You are right - I never saw any litter anywhere!

We went to phantaisaland which was spotless for a theme park!

Bye I love your user name. My ds love Imagine Dragons and introduced me to them and I'm also a fan now.

itsgettingwierd · 01/06/2021 19:24

Some people are just idiots.

I'll never forget an ex (- for many reasons but attitude being a big one) friend telling me I'm horror once how her DD had had her school trip ruined and was devastated as the teacher embarrassed her.

What happened? Her dd dropped her crisp packet on the floor and the teacher asked her to pick it up.

That - literally just that. But apparently it embarrassed her and she was going to pick it up before they left. Oh yes. Turns out they packed up ready to leave and it was still there and the teacher asked who's had x crisis and when she said she did the teacher simply said the packet was on the floor could she put it in the bin.

And my ex friend is a bloody teacher (now deputy) 🤷‍♀️

I wonder how we've come to a world it's more embarrassing to be asked to pick up your litter than is it actually drop litter in the first place.

If I open my car door and a rogue sweet wrapper escapes I die of shame and chase it 🤣

Cam2020 · 01/06/2021 19:30

I grew up in the UK in the 80s and my parents made it clear littering was not acceptable. Lots of bins were removed from shopping centres because of the IRA's penchant for leaving bombs in them at that time and it became a convenient excuse for lazy people people to litter and councils to never replace all of them. I'll never unserstand the mentality of people just discarding rubbish wherever they are! My 4 year old gets upset because she thinks someone has lost their drink, food etc. It doesn't occur to her that some lazy sod has just dumped it there! 😂

BakedTattie · 01/06/2021 19:34

@bonfireheart

"The bins aren't emptied often enough"... You put your rubbish into a bag and carry it with you. Simple.
I do thanks.

Where I live, it is mainly the seagulls. It’s well known where I live.

Obviously it is people too. We have signs on all our beaches saying ‘leave nothing but your footprints’

SkintSingleMother · 01/06/2021 19:40

I think it's a combination of lots of things - poor, fragmented uncoordinated waste disposal, lack of civic pride/sense of ownership of public spaces (we've never had a revolution or a despotic regime and there's a big standard of living gap which probably contributes to that). Agree with @colouringcrayons that any quick fixes would be expensive or culturally unworkable.

And seeing massive cut out figures of known fringe eugenicist and privileged weirdo Attenborough would make me more likely to drop litter, not less. I might even stop to add a Hitler tache to him while doing so.

Anoisagusaris · 01/06/2021 19:44

Loads of rubbish around a nearby seaside town but what irrationally annoys me most is people leaving tidy bags full of rubbish beside the full rubbish bins rather than bringing them home in their car (poor public transport so these people definitely come by car).

mrswhiplington · 01/06/2021 19:50

I once worked with a man who picked up a tray of chips that someone had thrown out of their car window and threw it back into the car while they were sat at traffic lights. He then pedalled off on his bike as fast as he could. 😄

JackieTheFart · 01/06/2021 20:36

@Ratatattatpat

Yes, all people are dirty bastards, apart from you OP, of course.
‘Scuse me, but there are plenty of us that never litter, and I personally think that @imaginethemdragons has been extremely reserved in her description!
MsJuniper · 01/06/2021 20:38

We went to a forest the other day and I was interested to see a sign saying that they did not have any bins there as research showed having bins actually encouraged litter dropping. I could see how it makes sense - it sends the message that your rubbish must be taken away and is yours alone to deal with.

joystir59 · 01/06/2021 20:46

I live at the seaside, it's not the seagulls it's the lazy dirty disrespectful stupid awful dirty lazy fucking humans.

Roominmyhouse · 01/06/2021 21:02

It makes me really cross. I think they should make children do litter picking as part of day to day life so they realise how much effort it is to clear up mess that’s left behind. We live near a school complex and the amount of rubbish around it is disgusting.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/06/2021 21:11

We absolutely need many more bins

I was at the beach today in Cornwall where there were ten massive wheelie bins at the back of the beach next to the Lifeguard Hut - the bins were really clean, even though they were massive they were lined with bags Confused - they were open so you didn't have to lift the lids (so wouldn't put anyone off touching them with Covid around)

There were literally a thousand people on that beach and not one scrap of litter Smile

It was at times HEAVING. I could not believe how tidy it was.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/06/2021 21:19

And there's loads of fly tipping in my street in London

They make it way too difficult to take to the tip - during the last year they shut the tip because of Covid Hmm

Then they opened it for 4 hours a weekend

It's a MASSIVE tip and it's only just gone back to full time hours

If you want people to get rid of old mattresses/old furniture you have to make it easy for them instead of charging for it to be picked up - but you're only allowed to put it out the morning they pick it up Confused - most people have gone to work by then and it take 2 people to lift things outside

The whole thing is just a ball ache - I'm sick of reporting the fly tipping in my street (no cctv) - they come every week and take it

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 01/06/2021 21:27

We live near a favoured picnic-and-sunbathing site. The farmer there recently had to put a steer down because of a bowel obstruction caused by plastic litter.

I get particularly annoyed by the people who go for family days out on a nearby beach and then chuck all their shit (literally, sometimes: used nappies) into the ditch along the lane where they park.

Sparrowsong · 01/06/2021 21:35

Yes OP, so many people are disgusting wasteful lazy bastards! Everywhere I go, beaches, woods, fields, I end up with a bag of litter, every dog walk I have a poo bag stuffed with litter as well as poo.
How is this socially acceptable? Do these people treat their homes the same way? They should be made to do community service picking litter every weekend for a year.

FrangipaniBlue · 01/06/2021 21:45

@LubaLuca

Driving back from the seaside yesterday we were caught in a little traffic jam in a residential area. The passenger in the car in front chucked a handful of rubbish (napkins, wrappers and receipts) from her window. DH got out, picked it up and posted it back through her window onto her lap Grin People are awful sometimes. You can only blame seagulls up to a point.
Your husband is a legend Grin
dementedma · 01/06/2021 21:54

My friends live near a local beauty spot. Every year the problem with “wild” aka dirty campers gets worse. Countryside rangers are involved, police get involved, local residents do litter picks etc but to no avail. As well as the usual beer cans, food wrappers and piles of shit - actual faeces and smeared toilet paper - people now leave their cheap tents, plastic chairs and other bits of kit. “Disposable” BBQs are left, often still smouldering. Utterly disgusting.

FrangipaniBlue · 01/06/2021 21:55
@imaginethemdragons

Is there anything taught in schools that help form that mindset ?
My MIL works in a primary school and she said the kids regularly drop rubbish on the floor. When challenged/told off their response is usually something along the lines of "but there are people whose job it is to clean up?" said with a serious face......

cancancan · 01/06/2021 22:06

I live by a sea side town and every sunny weekend the beach is left in a terrible state.
On a morning jog after such a sunny day a saw a rubbish lorry take a full size BBQ off the beach and taking it away.... like why would you drag a full size BBQ to the beach and then just leave it there?!!

woodhill · 01/06/2021 22:11

@FrangipaniBlue

Yes, I know what you mean but I say something like - would you do this in your own home ...... you certainly wouldn't in mine

There parents are not installing a good attitude

SkintSingleMother · 01/06/2021 22:37

But in the UK people don't see public spaces as being the same as their homes. There are long standing historical and cultural reasons for that which aren't going away any time soon. And those reasons will only become more entrenched as long as we have such a piecemeal and incoherent approach to waste collection and disposal at both local and national levels.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 02/06/2021 00:50

A few years ago I watched a family (mum, dad and three children) getting up to leave after spending a day on the beach. They were walking away leaving the remains of their picnic, several empty plastic bottles and food containers, behind on the sand. They had bags with towels and toys that they were carrying away, but they'd just left the stuff they had no more use for.

I said "You've forgotten your rubbish", and pointed to the heap of crap they'd abandoned. The children looked embarrassed but the parents launched into a tirade about how "the tide will clean it away" and how busybodies should mind their own business.

I wish there was still a refund on bottles the way there is in Scandinavia. I'm absolutely certain they wouldn't have left behind those bottles if they'd been able to get 50p for them at the shop.

Shamoo · 02/06/2021 01:01

@Stealhsquirrelnutkin a bottle deposit scheme is about to be introduced across the U.K., so you will have your wish 😀

I’m slightly bemused at people suggesting that people do this because bins are full. We live close to a take away fried chicken shop. There are bins both sides of the road which are never, ever full. Every day there is litter all over the place. And that’s definitely not seagulls where we are!

Whyhello · 02/06/2021 07:31

We went to a nature reserve at the weekend in the morning and found a trail of condom wrappers and a couple of used condoms. Delightful.

WelshDaffodil · 02/06/2021 08:04

I think they should return to 70s/80s style public information films on TV. They really did seep into the consciousness. When I'm overtaking on motorways I can still hear the jingle from one of them in my head. Some anti-litter ones would be great!
