I do enjoy how much attention the Economist has devoted to just how much we fucking swear. Also I didn't know we had a "swearometer".

@newnortherner111

The Economist assuming there are no single people, no fathers, on the site?
I understand your comment on the assumption that everyone here is a mother and not a father, but single people?
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/06/2021 10:26

Oh blimey, how will I ever get over the fact that Bulgari pulled their ads? Just when I needed a new fucking tiara.

I fucking love that graph.

Honestly though, it's not a fucking surprise is it? It think the phrase "no shit, Sherlock" sums it up best.

Soubriquet · 01/06/2021 11:45

Pfft

Fuck
Shit
Wanker
Cunt
Fuckbadger
Cuntpuffin

Enough swearing for you or shall I go on?

Soubriquet · 01/06/2021 11:47

@EastWestWhosBest

Single people. What’s wrong with that phrase?

There will be people on here who not in a relationship and are not a parent

This may be called mumsnet but it isn’t exclusive to mums

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 01/06/2021 11:56

Didn't MNHQ put this out themselves a week or two ago and The Economist has just picked it up?

newnortherner111 · 01/06/2021 11:59

@EastWestWhosBest there have been some, including children and young people, who have started threads. Or some who have had relationships who have no children but whose DP had them, and the relationship has ended.

Hence my belief there are some single people on the site, without children.

Bestoption · 01/06/2021 12:05

There are lots of people on here who don't have children, singles, in couples, of every age group.

I don't know, did they? I just saw it today via the E.

Not sure of the relevance of single people, I don't think anybody has said that only couples say "fuck". The graph is just part of an article collating a broader range of data about the impact of the pandemic on working parents.

Incidentally, as of 2017 anyway, we say "shit" the most (and swear the most overall) on Relationships, but the greatest usage of "fuck" is on the Feminism board. Make of that what you will.

I'm genuinely proud of this Grin (despite my sign up date for this username I've been here for years but clearly I'm shit at technology and managed to lock myself out of my previous account).

To be fair if an advertiser is Pearl clutchy about swearing I'm reasonably sure its probably not someone I want to buy from.

I usually agree with the difference between correlation and causation but like others I'm willing to bet this one is on the nose. My swearing went through the fucking roof when the schools closed (suitably in another room being screamed into a cushion obviously although I might have hissed at DP he was a twat out of DC earshot once or twice at the height of the shitshow

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/06/2021 12:34

I thought swearing in decline on MN, lots of posters stated to asterisk out swear words.

I noticed that. I like to remind them that saying cunt is allowed here.
UseOfWeapons · 01/06/2021 12:41

My word of the day is now cuntpuffin’!🙂 Thanks, @Soubriquet*!
I will obviously have to restrict some fucks to allow for extra cuntpuffins, but I’m sure I can manage that!
I also love that auto text is now suggesting cuntpuffin when I start a word beginning with ‘c’!

Soubriquet · 01/06/2021 12:46

You are more than welcome Grin

I know that, being childfree myself, my comment was why say that the Economist was assuming that there were no single people on the site.
Single people can be parents.

There are, but people without children are not likely to be swearing about the closure of schools.

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/06/2021 12:50

So should we expect their next chart to show that swearing spikes after Economist article? Grin

FusionChefGeoff · 01/06/2021 12:58

What happened for the spike a week before the last announcement in Jan - was it Christmas Day GrinGrin because if it was there's a whole other article there!!!
