Swearing spiked on Mumsnet after every announcement of a school closure

I do enjoy how much attention the Economist has devoted to just how much we fucking swear. Also I didn't know we had a "swearometer".

(I would hope) the likely scenario is that Mumsnet has its own analysis tool for gathering this data and has issued a press release or similar on the topic.

Imagine finally securing your internship at the economist and then on your first date "right mate, you are going to have to read ALL the threads on Mumsnet and count the swear words" and you are just sat there thinking mum & dad were right, studying journalism was a bad idea, why didn't I pick physics.

Oh, nobody had to read all the threads. You can scrape the data and write an algorithm to count the "fuck"s automatically. Easy as pie.

I'd enjoy doing it and I suspect their data people did too. The meetings about it would have been fun as fuck.

I’m surprised they look at here too

I really hope this is what happened. Grin

I love a good graph and I'm fucking jealous of the person who got to make that fucking amazing one. Grin

I would have thought cunt would have been a little higher though but it does seem to be rather consistent cunting usage at least. Grin
@FightingtheFoo they don't think it's on brand for them, basically.

"Such streams of expletives are causing trouble for Mumsnet. On August 19th the Times reported that sponsors were threatening to pull adverts from the website. Among them were Confused.com, a price-comparison site, the National Trust, a conservation charity and Bulgari, a luxury jeweller. The organisations are reportedly wary of being associated with increasingly foul-mouthed mothers. Are they right to worry?"
I'm not a mother. Is it ok by advertisers if I fucking swear?

IndecentCakes · 01/06/2021 14:00

I was a fucking National Trust member.

SirSamuelVimes · 01/06/2021 14:17

Me fucking too. But they were shit about opening up sites / toilets / play areas over and after lockdown, so they can get to fuck.

Now I have membership of a stately home that's still in private ownership, who opened as soon as they could and actually let guests have a fucking wee and let kids have a play in the fucking playground. So ner ner ner ner ner, National fucking Trust.

Do they count swear words in other languages? Could someone who has Welsh as a first language teach us them all.

Given everyone has learnt who the MIL is, or the DD, for example, I am sure we could all learn a few non Anglo-Saxon words.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 01/06/2021 15:46

@newnortherner111

The Economist is interested in this forum? We better start a few threads on interest rates, on financial instruments, on political instability in smaller developing countries, and a few others then.
Helen Joyce from the Economist is pretty good on women’s rights, I bet she reads FWR.
IndecentCakes · 01/06/2021 19:59

They were, but they were very fucking good at taking the bastarding Direct Debit off me every month. Also, they never replaced the toilet rolls at Polesdon fucking Lacey. Wankers.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 01/06/2021 21:25

I've got to say I've also gone off the National fucking Trust since they introduced a really stupid parking booking system in the last lockdown that didn't let anyone book. So everyone just parked on the street outside instead. Fucking genius.

I am very tempted to drop this thread to the Economist Grin I would be prepared to make a cautious bet that someone there is at least an occasional lurker.

Hello!

Yes our marvellous data team came up with the Swearometer a while back - I think we first deployed it during Brexit - and it's been swarmed over by journos ever since because it does offer a literally graphic way into the thoughts of 'ordinary people' (that's you lot) on various topics, especially when the peaks coincide with news events.

In fairness to the Economist though I think we nicked the Swearometer idea from them in the first place because of their analysis of swearing on MN in the piece from a few years back linked earlier in the thread.

Anyway please do give our data team some appreciation for this - they have to spend hours striving in the MN data salt mines for this stuff Grin

SomethingOnce · 02/06/2021 14:40

No shit.

Excellent fucking work, data team Grin

SirSamuelVimes · 02/06/2021 18:45

Back to the fucking coal face, data team! We've loads more fucks for you to count! (And a few cunts too).

@RowanMumsnet do advertisers really not like our swearing? What do they say about it? And conversely, are there any that are more interested in advertising on the site because of the swearing? This is fascinating!

Soubriquet · 02/06/2021 18:50

Imagine that conversation

“So what do you do for work?”

“Oh I go through mumsnet and see how many times a swear word was used!”

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 02/06/2021 18:57

Fuck fuck fuckity fuck.

newnortherner111 · 02/06/2021 19:01

Is there similar analysis for other swear words or even those which are perjorative such as slut, @RowanMumsnet ?

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 02/06/2021 19:06

Those cuntpenguin Economist idea-stealing bastards!

(Not really. I think they do have to get some of the credit for meticulously comparing which forum we said "dick" or "cunt" on more, and then constructing a delightful stacked bar of same.)

OP posts:
Pongo101 · 02/06/2021 19:06

@RowanMumsnet thats awesome, fab job data team

Can the data team treat us to a new year's special where they report the past year in its very own thread?

In 2021, Mumsnetters, you collectively used the word fuck 50,000 times
10000 threads were started about problematic mils
9/10 relationship threads encouraged the op to ltb
We identified that 70 percent of mumsnetters didn't read the fucking thread
We've had more dog-loving and child-hating posts than ever before

Possibly with some possible prizes thrown in to unsuspecting users for using the most profanities or similar.

newnortherner111 · 02/06/2021 19:13

@Pongo101 I think statistics on parking, neighbours and hot tub threads should be added. And number of diagrams if that is possible.

KineticSand · 02/06/2021 19:22

The best bit from the first graph is underneath

*Or FFS

😂

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 02/06/2021 19:30

Well I think the data team are fucking brilliant, well done! I’m a National Trust for Scotland member and somehow imagine them giving fewer fucks about swearing than the other lot but that’s just a hunch.
