I'm a Beekeeper, and have a hive in my garden, was sitting out earlier on a fair way from the hive and noticed this fellow a bit tired.
No idea if it was one of mine or not, but gave a little refreshment and off he went right as rain!
Managed to get an amazing photo 😃

A lovely little thing
@exexpat the drones are male, the females stay in the hive working with the Queen, it's the boy bees that go out collecting pollen mainly
Are you sure you are an actual beekeeper? Hmm

The workers who go out to collect nectar and pollen are female. Drones are the only males, they stay mainly in the hive and their only function is to mate with the queen. This is absolutely basic knowledge for beekeepers.

Yes, I am
Drones can collect nectar, and can leave the hive too
Females will stay with Queen until mature enough to leave

Or more amusingly, Green Porno by Isabella Rossellini, which explains the various sex roles of bees:

I think you need to go back and read some of your bee manuals.

We have discovered bumble bees living in the wall of one of our outbuildings. I bought a load of plants for the garden and it was like I'd provided them with an all you can eat buffet - I had about 30 of them all around me trying to get at the flowers while I was planting them!

toomanyplants · 31/05/2021 20:36

Thanks @exexpat, maybe I will

I found a bee falling around in my shady salad bed the other day. It didn't seem to be able to fly and was just wandering and falling over. I gave it a ride on my hand to a sunny borage leaf. It sat there in the sun for a minute, then gave its wings a good grooming with its middle legs, turned on its engines and flew off.

It made me very happy Grin

How lovely is it to see such a positive thread, keep them coming ❤️

I found the cat poking around at a big bee sitting on our patio last week. I got cat-face in and put down a little bit of raspberry jam in a spoon by the bee. No idea if it helped, but the bee was gone half an hour later.

ReachedTheEndofCake · 31/05/2021 20:54

@toomanyplants

I'm often found on my knees on the pavement randomly trying to give assistance to tired bees! People must think I'm crazy haha Oh they're lovely little things, yes i somehow think I could recognise my own.... there are about 20,000 in the hive 😂
Both myself and my husband do this Grin, and save anything we can from the roads.

I got my first shipment of bees on Friday. Never had bees before, so far they seem happy enough. Im nervous though, all those little lives depending on someone who really doesnt know what shes doing.

EloquentlyBrash · 31/05/2021 22:01

@PufferFishGoneWrong. Same!! Well I do... husband learned early on that our relationship meant regular trips to the wildlife centre, he goes along with it and I love him for it Smile.
