Am I being a holiday snob?

Looking to book a cottage/apartmenr (uk) for a weeks break at some point over the summer. There are, thankfully; still places to choose from. We have two DC 7 and 10.

Dh keeps sending me links to places that just dont look comfortable at all. He is a fan of a particular holiday let website that only ever seems to upload one or two pics of each place, and 100% of the properties on there look like they've not had so much as a lick of paint or a new mattress since the 1940s.

I honestly am not a snob. But I feel like I'm being made out to be one when it comes to these places.

They are all off the beaten track, no beaches near or attractions to visit near.

They (in the main) do cost less than going to more touristy areas but what's the point in saving 100/200 if there is literally nothing to do?

2019 he chose somewhere off this site that was similar to all the other ones - shabby and v v old, location was truly awful, I did the whole "it will be what we make of it" and we both found the trip so crap that we did the same (one) attraction with the kids twice in one week, and left a day early. It was so disappointing.

I just think the ages they are I would like

  1. To see more of the place I'm staying, not 1/2 pics
  2. To have days out available (kids at an age where they are ready to do a theme park, or failing that good beaches)
  3. I'd like the place to look and feel comfortable. We spend evenings in the property as our kids crash out by 8pm. I want it to be at least as comfy as sitting on my sofa at home!

I often stay high end - hotels
And cottages except for where location trumps need for certain things which simply aren’t on the cards anyway. A basic shack on a remote island will do me if that’s what’s there. High end cottages still get a pounding from users and it’s very hit and miss whether it’s to your taste etc.

For me it’s both.

Holidays I throw all but the kitchen sink at. It’s location and luxury

I haven't read the whole thread, but please insist on making the choice yourself. If he objects remind him strongly that you weren't happy with the last place and you will not tolerate a repeat. Holidays are expensive and it's nice to look forward to them, not dread them.

A happy holiday (indeed a happy marriage) this approach will not make

He’s been unreasonable in the past. Why don’t you use this as an opportunity to start afresh on the holiday front and agree a few things you both really want and then work together in finding something that rocks those boxes, accepting that you will both have to make compromises

I get the feeling that some people are double-booked on full cancellation this year, so fingers crossed that you find somewhere. I personally don't trust DH to book anything more important than a restaurant or train ticket when it comes to holidays.

I am not sure whether it is doable this year (as I think they have had to limit numbers), but we did a few rural Youth Hostel stays (typically a couple of nights at each). That might appeal to your DH's sense of 'good value'.

Otherwise my "go to" places to start looking are Landmark Trust and National Trust cottages, Cool Stays, Sawdays and Airbnb.

I'd just remind him he can either send links to accommodation that is near places for you all to go to, or he can fuck off and stop bothering you. Repeatedly doing a shit job of something isn't funny or charming. He only cares about price, so he's arranging the homes from low to high and insisting the £5 a night shitholes are 'perfectly OK' because he's incapable of planning a holiday for others properly.

Either he's being selfish and chooses places that suit him, regardless of the rest of the family, OR he's looking for cheap and NOT cheerful. Do it yourself. You need somewhere that's fun for the children. If the children are happy, everyone else can relax and be happy.
