Ridiculously sunburnt, help!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 30/05/2021 15:35

Not in the uk so maybe sun is stronger in Denmark!

Sat near the water today which was sunny but breezy, had a jumper on and was comfortable. Like a fucking idiot I didn’t even consider the sunshine might be strong.

I am painfully sunburned all down one arm, my forehead and one side of my face and neck

I’ve had a cool shower and popped some cream on it but it hurts and I feel a bit weird and shaky.

What can I do!

Fluids
Painkillers
Cool shower
Aloe Vera
Doctor if you still feel shaky

AmberIsACertainty · 30/05/2021 15:47

If you're not just dehydrated but low in salts too then water will make it worse (the shaky thing?). In those circumstances I drink sports drinks with the vitamins in, eat crisps and banana seem to help.

Aloe vera gel, moisturizer and calamine lotion for sunburn, several times per day. In that order, let one sink in then on with the next.

Rest and painkillers until you feel better. Ask the local pharmacy advice.

Mygardenisanightmare · 30/05/2021 15:49

If it's any consolation there will be thousands of very sun burnt people in the UK too this evening. Hope you feel better soon it's not nice.

Shaky sounds like sun stroke

CuriousaboutSamphire · 30/05/2021 15:53

Do you have a bath? Or a big sponge?

Get some milk powder and run a bath with quite a bit in it. Something about the amino acids helps remove the dead skin and soothe it. I am a very pale skinned, freckled red head. I always have milk powder and a huge soft sponge so I can either have a bath or hold the sponge on the burned areas.

As old wives tales goes that one does work. And I usually use either aloe vera, after sun and/or a good moisturiser afterwards. But the milk really does work and no, you don't smell afterwards 😊

Whatalottachocca · 30/05/2021 15:56

Piriton can help if you’re itchy/tingly.

TheWeeDonkey · 30/05/2021 16:03

Dioralyte (is that how you spell it?) Is good for dehydration (its a great hangover cure). Like others have said alor vera a cool bath or shower. I didn't know that about milk powder, I don't burn but DH does. Thanks for the tip.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 30/05/2021 16:11

Tha k you.

I went to the store for aloe Vera and couldn’t find any and the pharmacy is shut as it’s Sunday so no dioralyte

My right side if my face is so sore and absolutely glowing red. I don’t even care that it looks ridiculous it’s just so tender

Stupidly I’m really tearful and feel like such an idiot

I’m eating some salty rice crackers and drinking some water.

Very few people ever believe me about the milk but the few who do are now also recommending it.

One friend channels her inner Cleopatra and makes a big production of it 😁

Rubyrecka · 30/05/2021 16:23

Ohh no op I feel for you it's horrible being sunburnt.

Aloe Vera
Lucozade or something similar
A fan
Lots of after sun for when it starts to cool

Your going to have to grin and bare it. If you start feeling any worse tho call a doc.

ShabbyNat · 30/05/2021 16:27

what about a pharmacy in a supermarket??

GameSetMatch · 30/05/2021 16:27

You need a lucozade or similar to rehydrate don’t use plain water you need to replace salts etc. Sit in a cool room and load up with the sun cream. If you don’t feel better after the lucozade contact the doctor.

Thidwick · 30/05/2021 16:32

Put some slices of cucumber on your face. When you go to bed slather on some e45 or aqueous cream - really thick so it stays white. If you can swim in the water you were sat by then a half hour dip should help to take the sting out (especially if you’re by the sea).

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 30/05/2021 16:33

When I was badly sunburnt in Greece the locals told me to put Greek yogurt on it, it did help cool it down.

MimiSunshine · 30/05/2021 16:46

Sudocrem is good for sunburn. Put some on now and then Slather it on when you go to bed

LBOCS2 · 30/05/2021 16:52

I was going to say Sudocreme too. A good thick layer of it, it works wonders.

SomethingOnce · 30/05/2021 16:53

Lots of fresh antioxidant-rich foods - may or may not actually help the damage at this point, but it can’t hurt and will make you feel better Smile

UpTheLaganInABubble · 30/05/2021 16:53

Apple cider vinegar takes the sting and redness away... it stinks for about 10 minutes but the smell dies down after that

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 30/05/2021 16:55

Thanks all

No pharmacy’s are open here until tomorrow morning so can’t get aloe, sudocream or e45. I have a bottle of garnier dry skin moisturiser and that’s it. I’ve been using that but should I stop because it’s not unscented?

It’s so sore, I feel like it’s slightly swollen and may blister. I’ve been chugging water and have a cold flannel on it.

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 30/05/2021 17:02

Do you have any dairy products at all? Milk, yoghurt, sour cream, anything. They will all work, especially across a blistered area.

Green tea or rooibus? Cooled teabags placed on the worst bits can also help - I've bathed in both before now.

I do burn very, very easily, even through factor 50, total block and close weave clothing. So I have tried most of the weird suggestions over the years. I just have better access to studies on them these days 😊

Montalbanosono · 30/05/2021 17:04

Stupidly I’m really tearful and feel like such an idiot

The worst sunburn I ever got was in February in the mountains. Like you I felt so stupid for not realising how strong the sun was! Don't beat yourself up, the sunburn is bad enough. You won't do it again. I hope you are feeling a bit better.

Cleverpolly3 · 30/05/2021 17:07

Shaving foam
Or natural yoghurt

CoffeeBeansGalore · 30/05/2021 17:08

Bicarbonte of soda mixed into a paste with water & put on the sore bits. It will take the heat out.

murbblurb · 30/05/2021 17:08

It is 3 weeks to the northern hemisphere solstice. No consolation, but much of the UK will be toast tomorrow and Tuesday because ' I didn't think it was that hot'. No correlation of course but hey, only geeks listen at school...?

2bazookas · 30/05/2021 17:09

Drink lots of water and rest.

Get a floppy hat, loose shirt, sunscreen for next time.
