Ridiculously sunburnt, help!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 30/05/2021 15:35

Not in the uk so maybe sun is stronger in Denmark!

Sat near the water today which was sunny but breezy, had a jumper on and was comfortable. Like a fucking idiot I didn’t even consider the sunshine might be strong.

I am painfully sunburned all down one arm, my forehead and one side of my face and neck

I’ve had a cool shower and popped some cream on it but it hurts and I feel a bit weird and shaky.

What can I do!

Just remembered I have a v small aloe Vera plant! So have torn that apart and am applying it!

Have some skimmed milk but that’s it for dairy

Montalbanosono thank you thats very kind Smile

You’re all v kind. This idiot really appreciates it

Skimmed milk will be fine too. Soak tissue, toilet roll a flannel and lay it on for about 20 minutes then moisturiser or aloe it.

DinosApple · 30/05/2021 18:17

DH's best friend, god rest him, said when he got ridiculously sun burnt on holiday one year, his wife swore by putting chopped raw spuds on the area. Being completely bald she'd fashioned some sort of 1960s swim hat out of slices of raw potatoes and he'd sat there with that on his bonce for an hour dutifully...

I'm afraid by this point I was laughing so much I never did hear if it had helped him. He was the funniest person I've ever known and an excellent story teller. We did try this when DD2 got burnt in Wales, the only helpful part I think was the distraction.

It sucks being sun burnt so sympathies, hope the story cheers you up. Flowers

Oh I sympathise OP. It’s horrendous.

Aloe from the plant works like a treat and I’ve even tried the milk treatment a la @CuriousaboutSamphire and I can confirm it’s a good’un! Try not to go out in the sun tomorrow if you can help it. Best to give your skin a rest.

Don’t feel silly. All us blue fair folk have been on the same position.

BashfulClam · 30/05/2021 18:44

We had factor 50 on in Scotland today (DH has lupus so needs to be protected) and I saw some really sunburnt folk. One woman was lying on the grass sunbathing and she was scarlet, would not like to be her later! Keep putting cold water on it and treat it like any other burn, cold as possible flannels to try and take the heat out.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 30/05/2021 18:47

Aloe Vera and wet towels from the fridge

ButterflyBitch · 30/05/2021 18:50

@Thidwick

Put some slices of cucumber on your face. When you go to bed slather on some e45 or aqueous cream - really thick so it stays white. If you can swim in the water you were sat by then a half hour dip should help to take the sting out (especially if you’re by the sea).
Please don’t do this. Your skin is burning and will keep burning. If you lather a thick layer of something on it you’ll trap all the heat in. Don’t put a thick layer of anything on. www.nhs.uk/conditions/sunburn/
ButterflyBitch · 30/05/2021 18:58

Use moisturiser, take ibruprofen and if you feel unwell call a medical professional. Don’t put food, shaving cream or anything oil based on your skin please.

ChateauMargaux · 30/05/2021 19:03

Lavender... add some drops to a carrier oil or your moisturiser.. and also sniff it, will probably help your emotional reaction to the burns as well.

I was blown away a few months ago when using lavender on an overnight burn. I sniffed another essential oil which antidoted the effect the lavender was having, when I sniffed the lavender again, the pain reduced again. I had no idea that it had anything other than a topical effect.

KatherineSiena · 30/05/2021 19:07

Drink plenty of water and I also second the cold tea suggestion. Soak flannels in cold tea water and place on the burns. It really draws the heat out.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 30/05/2021 21:12

Thanks all for taking the time to respond.

Think there’s sunstroke going on aswell...I feel roughhhhhh

Foofbrush · 30/05/2021 21:17

It's a burn like any other so you need to get the heat out, or try to. Flannel or any other clean cloth (teatowel) soaked in cold water and lay out on, then keep renewing the cold water when the cloth warms up.

Keep your room as cold as possible with a fan.

Gladioli23 · 30/05/2021 21:18

How ill do you feel, what sort of symptoms do you have? It's my understanding that heatstroke can be very dangerous. Do you have an equivalent of NHS 111 you could speak to?

SamusIsAGirl · 30/05/2021 21:19

Eat some boiled eggs and drink rehydration solution.
Also get some porridge oats and soak them in the bath. put the soaked oats on the worst parts for topical relief - but don't let them dry.

KateTheEighth · 30/05/2021 21:21

Don't use the Garnier stuff!

That burns my skin and I don't have sunburn!

Giantrooster · 30/05/2021 21:25

Same place as you op, dd got a little burnt today as well.

If aloe doesn't do the trick try honey in a thin layer, and drink water with a salt and sugar solution (or coca cola) to rehydrate.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 30/05/2021 21:26

Why not call the vagt læge for advice? Use the akut app to find the duty pharmacy.

I live in Dk and am fair. Its so easy to get caught out and the weather has been so shit this year that when the sun comes out you really forget about suncream. Where were you today? Was it nice?

Nonamenoplacetogo · 30/05/2021 21:34

Do not put anything on it- allow the heat to escape overnight, use cool flannels to help. Tomorrow slather on Greek yoghurt- lived in the Med for years and this works. For heat stroke, drink lots of water and stay in a dark room. You might get the chills, cover yourself in a cool cotton sheet. Hope you feel better soon

KatherineJaneway · 30/05/2021 21:44

Natural live yogurt. Cools and helps heal the skin.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 30/05/2021 21:50

Thank you.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale & Giantrooster I was in Nydhavn today. My complete excitement to be outside in sunshine (I moved to CPH in October and that winter was rough! So the first bit of sunshine had me thrilled!) and the breeze meant I just didn't take notice.

My ear and lip have blistered and the rest is just painfully sore

OP posts:
Middleofthenight2 · 30/05/2021 21:51

Use aftersun and apply it regularly, several times before bed if you can. Drink a lot of water and don't wear clothing on the area if possible.

If you become more unwell please seek medical advice incase you develop heat stroke.

Holothane · 30/05/2021 21:55

Sunburn is awful as a child and teen I was red raw on holiday oh the agony of it, hugs.

fluffysocksgoodbookwine · 30/05/2021 21:57

If you have any fizzy pop (coca cola, lemonade etc), use 1/2 pop, half water, and add a pinch or two of salt. Makes something very similar to dioralyte.
If you can taste the salt, you need to dilute it a bit.

tiredanddangerous · 30/05/2021 21:57

So much bad advice on this thread. Don't put any kind of cream on it. You need to cook it down not trap the heat in; cool showers and cold flannels on it.

tiredanddangerous · 30/05/2021 21:57

*cool it down
