How does Kate choose her clothes?

I was just looking at the clothes which Kate has worn on her trip to Scotland. Loved the heather tartan Holland Cooper coat she wore yesterday! It set me thinking - how does she choose what to buy/wear? I can't imagine that she spends hours trawling the Internet to find things she likes the look of, but equally I can't believe someone else chooses outfits for her. I suppose some companies just send her samples to look at, but whatever the truth it must be very time-consuming, especially when she has to buy the shoes, bags and other accessories so it all co-ordinates!

I am pretty sure she has someone who buys all this stuff for her and makes suggestions. She might well make final decisions but I seriously doubt she’s actually researching and buying and coordinating her “working”wardrobe, and then looking after it and shipping it to where it needs to be. She has staff for that.

They absolutely do!! She will be given maybe 2-5 options and will choose between them, they will be fitted to her properly too so even things which other people can buy "off the rail" will not fit in the same way

She has a stylist. Although having said that, the fact that Kate has the type of figure that looks good in everything must make the stylists job much easier.

Why would you not believe the latter? Do you think Kate is also emailing the press saying her coat cost X?

Peridot1 · 27/05/2021 09:36

I would imagine she has a stylist who does the research etc and then she chooses from what the stylist pulls together. It’s probably very organised by season/events etc. Especially for royal engagements. Even more casual ones.

Sisisimone · 27/05/2021 09:37

Lol. She will have a stylist.

MaggieFS · 27/05/2021 09:38

Yep, a stylist. Who will probably also log where and when an outfit was last worn, etc.

ComDummings · 27/05/2021 09:39

She will definitely have a stylist, probably a whole team of them.

DappledThings · 27/05/2021 09:41

I assume someone chooses for her, why wouldn't it be that?

I hate the way some of her clothes are described as "recycled". Wearing something more than once is not fucking recycling, It's just wearing clothes like normal. It's idiotic that it is in any way noteworthy that anyone wears the same item of clothing multiple times.

gagrag · 27/05/2021 09:42

Yeah the recycling & thrifty comments are annoying

Port1aCastis · 27/05/2021 09:44

She'll have stylists to do that for her and other assorted staff to sort out her laundry and dry cleaning

BarbaraofSeville · 27/05/2021 09:49

Companies probably send clothes for her, because if Kate is seen in something, it sells out instantly and is a massive boost for the brand.

Even with coats costing hundreds of pounds, it's dirt cheap for that type of exposure.

Of course she has stylists, but probably has input too.

Buddywoo · 27/05/2021 09:49

Someone I know had to go to a meeting at Kensington Palace. When she was being security checked she noticed that there were about a dozen parcels being returned to Net a Porter.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/05/2021 09:52

It's probably a similar arrangement to what the Queen and other senior royals have, the women at least, I don't know if there are also people who tell William, Harry, Charles etc what to wear?

It's a huge part of her job. So time and money is given to the process.

They also pick clothes that have symbolism, so in Scotland it will either be blue or clothes that specifically go with her own tartan which is red and (a rather sickly shade of) yellow.

She has a team of several people and one or two of them spends a lot of time researching British brands and reaching out for look books. I imagine it's a finely honed process at this stage. Their engagements are booked about a year in advance so you just have to work away on the list.

They also would get lookbooks on spec from labels they've worked with in the past.

They order stuff, then they do a fitting from time to time, put together outfits for engagements and then order it. They do have to pay for it all.

Pre-kids she wore a lot of Zara and Reiss. But not anymore. I suspect its because she used to have time to go shopping and now just doesn't. So her team do it and it ends up being a more high end.

I'm not a big fan of her style - its very rigid looking and if you counted up the amount of blue coats she has you'd have a heart attack - but I'm glad she always looks appropriate.

BrieAndChilli · 27/05/2021 10:08

All of the royal family including the males and probably the children will have staff in charge of thier wardrobes, There is a lot of issues to think about when choosing the clothes

  • when/have they worn it before
  • who is it made by,
  • is the designer/material offensive to where it is being worn eg you wouldnt wear leather to a vegetarian event
- is it appropriate eg does it cover enough for events in vertain countries
  • colour - i know often Kates clothes match the colours of the flag of the country they are visiting
IreallydontknowImtired · 27/05/2021 10:10

Stylist, personal shopper. Someone also coordinates her outfit with PW's so they look 'together'.

PompomDahlia · 27/05/2021 10:17

Definitely a stylist. Possibly a whole team of them who will work with her staff to plan outfits according to her schedule. Certainly a hair and makeup person/people too

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 27/05/2021 10:29

All the RF have wardrobe staff who buy and maintain their clothes. I knew someone who was employed to do this for the Queen.

WildRosie · 27/05/2021 11:25

This thread makes me wonder if television personalities employ stylists, or at least have access to them. Gloria Hunniford dresses appropriately for a woman of her years without looking the least bit frumpy. The BBC Look North presenters - Luxmy Gopal, Amy Garcia and Keeley Hazell - always wear very flash-looking dresses and outfits. Likewise the BBC Breakfast presenters, whose names escape me!

ssd · 27/05/2021 11:26

Kate would look good in a bin bag

WildRosie · 27/05/2021 11:26

Keeley Hawes. My mistake. Miss Hazell has a rather different occupation!

forestbride · 27/05/2021 11:29

"a stylist"?Grin

Her clothes are bleeding awful

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 27/05/2021 11:33

She has two warehouses near Solihull. One is just for blue coat dresses. And the other one is divided up very carefully into these categories:

Scotland uniform- tartan coatdresses, blue items and that horrible tartan scarf.

Ireland uniform- various bits that are orange, white and green.

Striped items for anything to do with nautical pursuits/seaside visits.

A button department.

Then it's just various subsections for coatdresses of different colours.

It looks like one of those Amazon warehouses, you should see it. It has a staff of 122 and Kate sits in the middle on a plinth with a big supercomputer that's connected to Asos.

Serpenta · 27/05/2021 11:43

All the clothes are probably popped onto mannequins in a room in whichever home they live in and she just has to swan in and point at the ones she likes and wrinkle her nose at the ones she doesn't. No wrangling with Asos and H&M returns for Kate.
