is this racist?

Last month 7 new people started in my office, most of them are not white and have names relevant to their cultures. We work in the office btw so all of this is face fo face.

My line manager makes zero effort to pronounce their names and it’s even annoying me - I can’t imagine how they feel. Over the past month, he makes a song and dance about it. He walks up to the same individuals daily then pulls a face and says “you know I’m bad with names”. He then cycles through say 10 different incorrect names and then laughs it off as “being bad with names” when he’s told he got it wrong again. This happens multiple times a day, for the past month.

When he’s told their name, he just says he won’t remember. He’s even resorted to referring to some of my colleagues by their first initial or giving them a random name like Mike, John or whatever instead of taking the time to remember their names.

My manager finds this funny/a cute personality quirk, but I’m thinking it has to be indirect discrimination, if not direct discrimination? It’s not even as if the names are super long or difficult to pronounce. I don’t work closely with the new starters but I remember their names.

It’s dreadful. Someone should report him. Why don’t you OP?

ConfusedAdultFemale · 26/05/2021 18:59

Yes, it is but you could put your job on the line calling it out to his face if he’s your manager too. Is there someone else you could speak to about it or could you let your colleagues know if they wish to make a complaint you’ve witnessed the behaviour and will be honest about it?

TaraR2020 · 26/05/2021 19:00

Yes, its racist

Thisisjaaam · 26/05/2021 19:01

Meh

Newkitty · 26/05/2021 19:01

Yes, it’s racist. In your shoes I would a) talk to the person who’s doing it b) report to hr or c) report to the person’s boss

MistySkiesAfterRain · 26/05/2021 19:06

I would have no problem with making a comment about it but not in front of those people whose names he can't remember. Or tell HR if you don't feel comfortable. Sorry but you have a problem if you can't learn ten names.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 26/05/2021 19:06

7 names sorry.

Creamdo · 26/05/2021 19:07

How horrible Sad

cruzrack · 26/05/2021 19:07

100% this is racist. You should do the right thing and report this. It doesn't have to get back to him that you made the complaint. Do the right thing OP.

Cam2020 · 26/05/2021 19:07

It's bloody rude and not cute or quirky in tve slightest.

Does he remember which random name he's given them? If he does, then he's not bad with names, he's completely ignorant.

Cam2020 · 26/05/2021 19:08

And racist.

IndecentCakes · 26/05/2021 19:11

It's extremely racist.

Wheresriri · 26/05/2021 19:17

Yup racist

KidneyBeans · 26/05/2021 19:22

Racist disrespectful and lazy

cherry2727 · 26/05/2021 19:22

It is op! It's one thing not being good with names but substituting their names with an English name is downright racist! I am surprised he hasn't been reportedShock

It's certainly incredibly rude and insulting. Is he "bad" with the names of new members of staff if they are white or rather have a familiar name? If he has no problem with their names then obviously it's racist. It's not funny or quirky, its racist, immature and very unprofessional.

I understand why PP have advised reporting it but I prefer to speak to people directly before escalating things. So I'd probably say something like, "you know it's looks really rude and racist when you haven't learnt people's names after they been here a month, I'd try before HR get involved if I were you".

If the colleagues who are affected wanted to escalate things then I would support them in doing that but they may be worried that raising a grievance will affect their job security, particularly if there is a probationary period.

If this guy is motivated by racism rather than a shit memory and being too self absorbed to learn how to pronounce new names then you cannot monitor his thinking and are unlikely to change it but you can challenge behaviour which makes the working environment unwelcoming to anyone who isn't white.

toocold54 · 26/05/2021 19:24

I think this is really rude! And giving them ‘white’ nicknames like that shows that it’s racist/discrimination.
Even if they were white British I’d still be complaining because I think it’s extremely rude especially in a manager position.

HappydaysArehere · 26/05/2021 19:25

That is not kind or respectful. You don’t have to bring racism into it as it is just not on - period.

FelicityPike · 26/05/2021 19:25

Very racist as well as ignorant & rude.

AlexCabot · 26/05/2021 19:26

If you have to ask if something is racist then it probably is.

picturesandpickles · 26/05/2021 19:27

Yes it is racist. What an embarrassing dickhead.

wingsnthat · 26/05/2021 19:27

I am considering reporting him. I reckon this is probably part of the culture at my workplace though and I’m not very senior myself as i haven’t been here long. I do doubt my report would be taken seriously. His manager is the same as him unfortunately. Though I’d probably give her a pass for forgetting a new starter’s name as she doesn’t see them daily or work closely with them like he does!

It's disgraceful and racist. How rude to make no attempt at someone's name!

Babygotblueyes · 26/05/2021 19:31

That is horrific!!!! He deserves to get into a shitload of trouble.
