Present for vegan child?

WhathappenstoDD · 24/05/2021 14:15

Been invited to an old school friends DCs birthday party with my DD. SFs DC will be turning 5, my DD will be 7 by the time we go.

Invite says that they can only accept gifts which are fully vegan including toys. I was thinking maybe of getting a book? But I don’t know if books are vegan.

So any suggestions? I don’t want to offend by turning up with the wrong present.

I’d give them a fiver. I don’t have time to be searching out vegan books or whatever

Fivers aren't vegan though

@Reachersloveinterest

Best birthday present my son ever got was an apple tree.

At his 5th birthday party, his friend turned up saying he wanted to get him a treehouse but his mum said no so they got him a tree for it to go in instead.

It's growing in our garden and has apples
Every year. Lovely long lasting (vegan) gift.

Oh that is lovely.

I'd be thrilled if any of us got that for a present.

Plenty of people think (wrongly) that home educated children don’t interact with others. It really couldn’t be further from the truth

During a pandemic?

Get a good quality wooden puzzle or game. Jaques do some good stuff.

Why would a school attending kid have more interaction during lockdown and school closures than the home-schooled kid?

How about a wooden soprano recorder and a second hand book of music? I started playing age 5 and i loved it.

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 25/05/2021 12:41

To go with the wooden recorder (love the idea)

I agree with whoever said get the poor child something plastic and as tacky as possible from Claire's. A pink sparkly tiara or something like that

Well done for not being judgemental op. Here's a list of accidentally vegan type snacks for future parties. It doesn't take into account things like palm oil, though if they are environmental they should know palm oil sustainability is the best option not boycotting. I keep a stash of party rings myself for vegan/veggie kids at school who are disappointed otherwise when haribo etc handed out at school. Love hearts are a good shout too!
I didn't know love hearts are vegan my DD loves those so will take a 4 pack to add to the party table thank you

Why do you think they're not having a happy childhood? Confused

And why would you knowingly buy plastic tat, that you know the parents don't approve of, so is likely to be chucked/passed on/returned

It really isn't that difficult to buy a gift that isn't plastic....

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 25/05/2021 13:43

It's people that equate plastic tat and happy childhoods that I feel sorry for.
Lots of wonderful gift ideas to choose from. But some hear the word vegan and can't resist sticking the boot in.

sashh · 25/05/2021 13:56

A wicker basket with a note that you will take the child with yours for a picnic in the summer.

A 'drum kit' made with empty tin cans in different sizes and painted in bright colours - or give it as a separate pieces to make.

I've just googled 'vegan toys' the site was not what I imagined, definitely not suitable for a child.

How about a nice piece of driftwood to hang on the wall with "never look a gift horse in the mouth" carved into it?

Lego is an example of “plastic tat” that brings immense pleasure to many children all the way into their adulthood.

What is the non-plastic equivalent of Lego?

I agree we should be mindful of buying too much plastic but I feel sorry for a kid who will never play with Lego or have a game of monopoly amongst many other things.

KaleSlayer · 25/05/2021 15:01

Those people make themselves look really pathetic. I just pity them. You have to question why it bothers them so much that they need to come and make an offensive ‘funny’ comment and they get so pissed off about it.

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 25/05/2021 15:15

Personally, I don't think of Lego as plastic tat.
Although I am talking about the original multibricks sets not ridiculous Lego friends etc.
I'm pretty sure the parents in this case would feel the same and one good multiset is all that's needed. Possibly secondhand.
The plastic tat they're trying to avoid would be the aforementioned god awful Claire's tiara.
I know you think Lego is some sort of gotcha but it's very clear the family just don't want unnecessary landfill.

goshthatsawful · 25/05/2021 15:39

Ugh, vegans like this make the rest of us look bad

I'll ask them about it if I get to know them better, my DD absolutely loves Lego as do my cousins children who're between the ages of 4 and 10.

I've decided to go with a wooden jigsaw like this with numbers on. DD has one similar and the different pieces fit together in different ways and I've used them over lockdown to help with 2x tables etc. and DD loves putting them in colour patterns or number patterns or building something else out of them entirely to play with. So educational and fun.

I will also get a jellycat or similar toy, my DD loves her soft toys to play with and you can get some different ones with jellycat like bees or vegetables.

That looks great OP. It looks a bit Lego like in its execution as I imagine you could put it together to make your own dragon like beast.

PineappleWilson · 25/05/2021 16:38

We have a couple of the alphabet versions of that puzzle, an elephant and a whale. They're still going strong 10 years on; a good investment. Still think a skipping rope would be good though. Never met a little girl who didn't want to give skipping a try.

Never met my DD, she hates it, always avoids going out to play at school when the skipping ropes come out

Don't be silly @PaperbackRider, that comment was in response to quite a few sarky comments that they're vegan.
If this thread was entitled eco not vegan there'd be zero controversy.
