Present for vegan child?

WhathappenstoDD · 24/05/2021 14:15

Been invited to an old school friends DCs birthday party with my DD. SFs DC will be turning 5, my DD will be 7 by the time we go.

Invite says that they can only accept gifts which are fully vegan including toys. I was thinking maybe of getting a book? But I don’t know if books are vegan.

So any suggestions? I don’t want to offend by turning up with the wrong present.

@iklboo

Sorry binary - seems the parents are uber strict and won't allow any plastic at all in the house whatsoever.
Ok, I amend my list as follows

Colouring books and pencils ✔️
Ball of some sort, or a game like skittles? (Wood skittles are available!) ✔️
Bubble machine/wand
Crafty stuff: jewellery making, pottery painting sets of things like rainbows and fairies
Puzzles - whatever nonsense they're into or generics.
Books/comics
Gardening stiff, so like maybe a grow your cress kit? Or a trowel and watering can set. (Get metal ones)
Baking accessories... Get metal ones
Tea set - ceramic
Dolls
Teddy/stuffie
Stationery/paints/crayons
Sticker/activity books...fine maybe not the sticker.

I do like the idea of gardening stuff. Very ethical.

Heck it's going to be hard to find something ! But what about a few ( terracotta) pots and seeds that grow quick , things like Ming beans , dress, baby lettuce , spring onions or is 5 yrs a bit to young for that kind of thing ?

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 24/05/2021 18:25

Natural fibre skipping rope with wooden handles

Metal or wooden musical instrument (kids xylophone, wooden recorder, pottery ocarina, tin whistle if you want to be a bit evil).

Wooden skittles set.

llamaparades · 24/05/2021 18:43

lanka kade, orange tree toys do lovely wooden puzzle sets but thing about it they come in plastic packaging.

I recently brought DS who's 5 this:
Bigjigs Toys Wooden Traditional Snakes and Ladders Board Game https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ZI48WT4/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabcA809Q75EK6ZN5KYM6S1H??encoding=UTF8&psc=1

He's played it loads and very reasonably priced.

Staffroomdoughnut · 24/05/2021 18:49

Please go to the party and get her something fun and not directly linked to the fact she’s being raised a vegan. I’d go for a wooden toy.

Wooden bus and people £15:

Asda train set £10:

I also thought the green toys plastic boats were a good shout.
Hope she has a great party.

Haudyourwheesht · 24/05/2021 19:02

I got my DDs some lovely Lanka Kade wooden toys for Christmas a couple of years ago. Never get looked it. They just like plastic crap. Hmm

KaleSlayer · 24/05/2021 19:04

I’m starting to get a bit suspicious about the number of threads started recently that have the potential to end up bashing vegetarians/vegans. 🤔

Anyway, if I was asked this I would give money and/or some vegan chocolate/sweets.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 24/05/2021 19:06

Oh FFS, how awkward. I'd get them a tin of baked beans....

OrangeSamphire · 24/05/2021 19:13

Enough with the ‘poor child’ claptrap Hmm.

Honestly it’s hard to believe some people are still so narrow minded about vegan and sustainable lifestyles.

Fwiw I am vegan, I just can't think of enough non-vegan toys for it to need specifying.

I think a tin of chickpeas would be better.

It’s because ‘vegan’ has been mentioned. Every Christmas there are loads of posts slagging people are for buying loads of ‘plastic tat’ and buying their kids piles of presents etc. Most posters on here agree that ‘plastic tat’ should be reduced on those threads. But mention no plastic along with ‘vegan’ and it’s all ‘poor child’. 🙄

OrangeSamphire · 24/05/2021 19:43

Agree @KaleSlayer. There’s a lot of bad feeling towards and misunderstanding of veganism.

idontlikealdi · 24/05/2021 19:46

Poor kid. Stick a tenner In a card or is that too plastic?

KaleSlayer · 24/05/2021 19:50

OrangeSamphire

It’s really annoying. There’s yet another thread in the last couple of hours with really shitty comments on. And a few in the last few days.

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2021 19:51

I'd get her an Emma Bridgwater mug with her name on it, but my vegan son told me a mug is the worst present ever, so what do I know?

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2021 19:52

Obviously not all vegans hate mugs, but he doesn't see any point in buying new mugs when everyone will already have a mug. It's an eco thing.

skybluee · 24/05/2021 19:54

I'm not vegan but from the way the msg is phrased I don't think they're actually being that unreasonable, they said 'if' bringing a gift, they basically don't want a gift to be given and then they have to throw it away/get rid of it which makes sense.

i thought of art supplies but I suppose you'd have to be careful what they were made of (e.g. paintbrushes).

User5485421134 · 24/05/2021 20:03

Sounds batshit but somehow very 2021...
The majority of LUSH products are vegan

It’s more to do with the fact the kids’ life is being so highly controlled and, as a result, limited than anything to do with the veganism.
They don’t attend school and OP thinks they may not have interaction with other children.
They are not allowed any plastic toys (it would be fine for their parents to make the decision to not get them plastic toys but they are not allowed to have them even when bought by other people)

I feel sorry for the kid. They might miss out on finding the thing that makes them most happy in the world because they aren’t allowed to broach the confines of their parents’ strict regimen.

So do vegans only have one of each thing? Grin It would help with clutter I suppose.

I'm vegan and I bloody love mugs. Especially if they come filled with something tasty or interesting Smile

I was a nature loving child and I loved my flower press- lots available on Etsy or can be really simply made with two squares of thin wood, cartridge paper and 4 carriage bolts if you have anyone handy with woodwork. You could also do a den kit, hammock, bug hunt kit or tickets to a National Trust activity- you could even buy one ticket for your daughter and they can go together. If you focus on the natural I don’t think you can go wrong!
