Present for vegan child?

WhathappenstoDD · 24/05/2021 14:15

Been invited to an old school friends DCs birthday party with my DD. SFs DC will be turning 5, my DD will be 7 by the time we go.

Invite says that they can only accept gifts which are fully vegan including toys. I was thinking maybe of getting a book? But I don’t know if books are vegan.

So any suggestions? I don’t want to offend by turning up with the wrong present.

No plastic gift cards 😂 good god. Just give cash or is that not allowed either

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 24/05/2021 20:32

I'm vegan. I think this is probably just a clumsy way of saying don't get haribo or chocolate, it'll be a waste. Ditto plastic toys. They're probably just trying to be environmental.

What's the child like op? That might help narrow it down.
Love the skipping rope idea.
You can get vegan facepaints. (Be careful to double check any brushes don't use boar bristles. Most paint brushes in the UK do.
If you're handsy materials and 'time' gift to make a big hotel.
Dick King Smith books have good animal friendly messages (I'd ask with books on what she already has)

Bug hotel not big hotel.
Go retro with a pair of wooden stilts?

Vegan crayons and a colouring book made from recycled material/paper?

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 24/05/2021 20:37

They don’t attend school and OP thinks they may not have interaction with other children

Plenty of people think (wrongly) that home educated children don’t interact with others. It really couldn’t be further from the truth.

Of course maybe this family is the exception. I doubt it somehow though.

Great thread for showing how people who make life choices other than the mainstream get bashed over the head. Really. A star.

Checkingout811 · 24/05/2021 21:08

Well no children have been interacting with others recently if they haven’t been at school.

Hoppinggreen · 24/05/2021 21:14

How about a mug and a hot chocolate bomb? You can get vegan ones

OrangeSamphire · 24/05/2021 21:14

Actually they have. Home education groups have in many cases continued. And informal outdoor activities have been happening in home ed circles throughout covid (with the exception of the first lockdown), working within the restrictions.

Ylvamoon · 24/05/2021 21:15

Not sure if this has been mentioned.

But for a 5 year old, I would look into getting some wooden bead sets to make bracelets and necklaces.

That's good fun and can be shared with other children or parents.

Mhc19 · 24/05/2021 21:28

I would probably go for sweets or chocolate. That way you can spend to your budget. Candy kitten sweets are really good and some are vegan.

Nataliafalka · 24/05/2021 21:28

They sound like a right bundle of laughs. I

Peachesarepeach · 24/05/2021 21:38

Thanks for whoever posted the Etsy link - I'm not even vegan and bloody loving these!

Just bank transfer what you would spend on a gift if that's possible is that an option

Pinetreesfall · 24/05/2021 21:43

I'm sorry you can't dictate what gifts you want! I would decline the invite!
Or maybe I will try it next party we have - I only accept gifts made of solid gold Grin

OrangeSamphire · 24/05/2021 21:54

You’re welcome @Peachesarepeach Grin

Etsy is a rabbit hole though, once I go in I struggle to get out with my wallet intact!

Stompythedinosaur · 24/05/2021 21:54

I would get an ecobuddiez cuddly toy - around a tenner off amazon and made from recycled bottles (I wouldn't tell them I bought it off amazon though).

firstimemamma · 24/05/2021 21:59

I honestly just wouldn't go personally. I find the 'anything that's not plastic' answer very blunt and rude, as well as unhelpful as it provides no ideas or direction. I hate plastic toys with a passion but would never dream of being so abrupt and always act grateful for whatever my toddler receives. Even if I did want to specify no plastic, there are ways of wording things!

Anyway that's not the answer you wanted op! Not on the high st or jo jo maman Bebe do some nice wooden toys and so do Aldi.

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2021 22:15

@Haudyourwheesht - my DS does indeed have only one of each thing- he says he never intends to have anyone round so doesn't need more than one plate/bowl/mug etc.
He's not particularly sociable, but I guess if someone was coming round he would go to the charity shop to acquire a mug.

I never liked people giving my DC sweets, so would avoid that.

I'm not sure a 5yo would really appreciate Lush products

Eco night light I like the look. of these little cardboard houses

SoddingWeddings · 24/05/2021 22:16

bottledbaking.co.uk/collections/vegan

Lot of vegan treats there - the brownie mix is LUSH and makes a nice rainy day activity for the family?

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2021 22:18

Most of them are out of stock on that site- they also have them on Etsy but I couldn't figure how to link from Etsy on my phone

Merchymor · 24/05/2021 22:20

These are a bit pricey .. but I would love someone to buy me the aubergine one Smile
