Present for vegan child?

WhathappenstoDD · 24/05/2021 14:15

Been invited to an old school friends DCs birthday party with my DD. SFs DC will be turning 5, my DD will be 7 by the time we go.

Invite says that they can only accept gifts which are fully vegan including toys. I was thinking maybe of getting a book? But I don’t know if books are vegan.

So any suggestions? I don’t want to offend by turning up with the wrong present.

Oh! Maybe plants of some sort. A lovely painted pot and some sunflower seeds or vegetable seeds for example.

PippinStar · 24/05/2021 16:48

I’m vegan - I would consider most toys to be vegan?! Unless made out of wool or something. Maybe I’m just a terrible vegan.

Anyway, I don’t know what to suggest if your friend is super strict but I can’t see how you could go wrong with wooden toys, organic clothes (H&M do lovely ones), art supplies, or books. Ruby Roth does some lovely books for vegan kids on Amazon. She also does a vegan kids cookbook on Amazon which looks good.

Bloody Hell, I don’t think I’d be going to this party, sorry. Why do some people have to make things so difficult.

That’s what I’d get them. If it were an adults birthday Grin Wouldn’t be so mean to a child with batshit parents.

rainbowstardrops · 24/05/2021 17:18

If they're that strict then they should have said no presents needed! That child will have a childhood of misery if her parents carry on like this.

Checkingout811 · 24/05/2021 17:22

I would give money.

Although if I was the parent in this situation, I would be saying don’t worry about gifts.

UseOfWeapons · 24/05/2021 17:26

I’d probably give her some vegan chocolates, preferably in recycled paper packaging!
Although I might not bother at all, and turn up with nothing, as cards are wasteful! 🙂 Do you have to use public transport to get to the party, or can you drive?
It’s a minefield!

I can drive but don't own a car so i might have to get a taxi depending on whether there's a safe route to walk from the bus.

Aha, was just wondering whether in the whole scheme of a truly vegan childhood, whether having a birthday party with people driving their children there was frowned upon! Cars might not be compatible with their green lifestyle! 😉
Good luck, whatever you decide!💐

I'm going, like I said I feel sorry for the little girl not going to school she must be quite lonely, I'm not sure if she does groups or anything to do with homeschooling but a lot of the photos I see are of her running around a field or the forest.

I'm not judging them at all, they clearly believe in the cause and are doing absolutely everything they can to support it, their choices as parents.

I couldn't do it to my DD myself though. I wanted to home school but couldn't.

Erm. Pretty much what you'd get any 5yo?

Colouring books and pencils
Ball of some sort, or a game like skittles?
Bubble machine/wand
Crafty stuff: jewellery making, pottery painting sets of things like rainbows and fairies
Puzzles - whatever nonsense they're into or generics
Books/comics
Gardening stiff, so like maybe a grow your cress kit? Or a trowel and watering can set
Baking accessories
Tea set
Dolls
Teddy/stuffie
Stationery/paints/crayons
Sticker/activity books

00100001 · 24/05/2021 17:58

Lol at a 5yo liking "anything that isn't plastic"

That's definitely what the parents want!

Anyway, as it's not until August, literally ask them near the end if July for a list of stuff...

iklboo · 24/05/2021 17:59

Sorry binary - seems the parents are uber strict and won't allow any plastic at all in the house whatsoever.

COL1N · 24/05/2021 18:00

Wow, they sound fun! 🤣

GameSetMatch · 24/05/2021 18:01

How about a bamboo bucket and spade set or a bamboo digger for the sand?

If the child is only little then a bamboo dinner set you can get them it’s cute little pictures on and matching cups/utensils.

How about a tin toy like a top spinner or a wind up robot?

PastaLaVistaBBY · 24/05/2021 18:01

Ethical toy - something like this? www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/the-den-kit-company/the-potion-making-kit/

TuvoknotSpock · 24/05/2021 18:02

"Green toys" you can get them in tk maxx amongst other places and I think are compostable recycled plastic?

GameSetMatch · 24/05/2021 18:03

@Checkingout811 money isn’t vegan though is it? Thought notes had animal derivatives in it?

Anoisagusaris · 24/05/2021 18:04

Just because they are vegan doesn’t mean they are environmentally strict. She didn’t mention no plastic.

GameSetMatch · 24/05/2021 18:05

Ooo this looks good, what 7year old would t want a potion making kit! www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/the-den-kit-company/the-potion-making-kit/

My DD will be the 7 year old, the birthday child will be 5, sorry if it wasn't obvious in my OP.

@GameSetMatch oh Christ 😭😭😭

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 24/05/2021 18:11

@JackieTheFart

I’d give them a fiver. I don’t have time to be searching out vegan books or whatever.
Oh fuck, absolutely. I always feel like these kind of parents just want to test their superiority over you. Whether you’ve been clever enough to navigate their rules etc. Fuck that

I’d give money and invite the kid over for play dates so they can experience a bit of normality.

iklboo · 24/05/2021 18:13

Yes she did in the follow up message.

katy1213 · 24/05/2021 18:14

That poor child! I suppose you could give a tenner - but there's plastic strips on banknotes.
I do hope she grows up to be a carefree capitalist carnivore!
