Why do we put forward such awful acts for the Eurovision?

I can't abide the Eurovision but for many years I've wondered why we put through such awful acts and seem surprised when we fail?

Didn't we have Katie price one year?

Why don't we put through people like Adele or Rag N Bone Man, Little Simz or Florence of the Machine?

Why can't they represent us?!

They’d still lose.

1happyhippie · 23/05/2021 19:14

I’m not sure they would want to do it

Bluntness100 · 23/05/2021 19:14

Becayse it’s a pile of shite and they don’t want to, they’ve their reputations to think of.

SinkGirl · 23/05/2021 19:17

I LOVE Eurovision and have watched it every year since I was a kid. I even went to Stockholm for it a few years ago. LOVE IT.

In the U.K., Eurovision is seen as a joke. Elsewhere it isn’t. Some countries take it extremely seriously, and do well as a result. In recent years we have made no effort to submit something that has even the slightest chance of doing well. Because of the attitude towards Eurovision, our most popular acts wouldn’t do it. That’s not the case in other countries.

Still, when a small country like Iceland can put up something so brilliant and unique you have to wonder what our excuse is. The last few years have shown that unusual / non-pop entries can do well so why do we continue with the same outdated shit?

People are just blaming Brexit but our entry deserved to come last - it was the worst by a long margin.

SinkGirl · 23/05/2021 19:17

We didn’t have Katie Price, but she tried.

Fontella · 23/05/2021 19:18

Because they know the competition is a cheesy joke dominated by political voting.

The UK is one of the countries which has dominated the popular music industry for decades. We don't have to prove ourselves fecking Eurovision.

It's a joke! And anyone who takes it seriously needs their head examining.

Bluntness100 · 23/05/2021 19:22

I actually can’t believe anyone wastes an evening actually watching it. It’s like a parade of shite act after shite act. It’s just really really bad.

CliftonGreenYork · 23/05/2021 19:22

We don't take it seriously unlike the rest of the Europe. Almost all other countries have massive national selection shows which go on for weeks - kinda like the X-Factor. Once the winner is selected they then spend months promoting them and the single all around Europe. They appear on tv shows, radio and they release the song as a single. By the time it gets to the show its has millions of fans to vote for it.

The UK never takes it seriously and does no promoting. Our song was crap, the singer was out of tune, breathless and looked terrible. Poor staging, outfit and can't dance.

There are plenty of things I can’t believe people waste their time on, but that’s life isn’t?

Eurovision is an enormous amount of fun, I massively enjoy it but would rather burn my eyes with cigarettes than watch a football match 🤷‍♀️

It’s really not a joke for other countries though. The U.K. see it as a joke because we are shit at it.

Well I’ve lived for five years in mainland Europe, and The Uk was part of Europe till the end of the year and I’ve never ever seen any country do this.

Walkingtheplank · 23/05/2021 19:31

Why would anyone successful put themselves forward for nul points? Only those who think some publicity is better than no publicity would apply. I dont know who our most successful artist is in Europe but I dont think it would make a difference if they competed.

As it is, whilst James Newman seems like a lovely chap, the song was boring and the staging was pitiful. There was nothing to remember about it. Such a shame.

I'd rather we didnt make the financial contribution with the strong possibility of not being in the final. It would be easier to enjoy without us being in the mix.

adawong · 23/05/2021 19:31

The UK is still a part of Europe.

ilovebagpuss · 23/05/2021 19:34

I don’t think we deserved nil points but it was a bit rubbish. Agree with the weird staging and outfit I couldn’t get past the long pleather coat that just didn’t suit his build.
I don’t know why we can’t have decent singers/bands I always thought they had to be unknown but I’ve probably made that up!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/05/2021 19:34

I think we should send Andy and the Odd Socks. Grin

I think any decent UK band doesn't want to become a laughing stock. It's too much bad rep. Plus the bye into the finals probably doesn't help, it's not like the UK has to try each year...

StopSayingDueDiligence · 23/05/2021 19:36

Ok I think I'm understanding it a bit now.

When did the U.K. leave Europe then? I must have missed that.

Theunamedcat · 23/05/2021 19:38

Didn't we send blue one year and still get nowhere? They can sing

Bluntness100 · 23/05/2021 19:41

We’ve had loads of decent singers, Bonny Tyler, blue, englebert humperdink, Michael ball, Katrina and the waves. It makes no difference, it’s a shite political contest.

StreetHaunting · 23/05/2021 19:42

We won with Katrina and the Waves!

FatCatThinCat · 23/05/2021 19:44

The UK puts forward awful acts because it thinks it's superior to all the other countries who compete and only takes part so it can sneer at the others and spew bile and sour grapes when it deservedly comes in last.

thisisfineihavewine · 23/05/2021 19:45

@Theunamedcat blue came 11th

MrsFin · 23/05/2021 19:46

The Lyndsey de Paul song Rock Bottom was good.
They came second to Abba. Would have won any other year.

goingtotown · 23/05/2021 19:46

It’s about time we pulled out of this contest. We’ll never get a decent score no matter who performs it’s too political.
