Did anybody get married in 1981?

It's my parents Ruby Wedding coming up and would like to get some photos/things together from when they got married in 1981. Did anybody else get married that year? Apart from Charles and Diana... Can you remember what you had on your gift list for example or what food you had at the reception? Just to help them have a trip down memory Lane. I know they still have the dinner service they were given on their wedding day 😀

I would stick with news and and culture from that year.

Other people’s wedding catering and gift lists aren’t really relevant to their memories.

AvoidingPandaEyes · 23/05/2021 16:02

My sister did. She received 3 fondue sets although I’ve no idea if she asked for them. People always gave towels and my grandmother had a penchant for gifting coffee pots. Not matching to anything, or with its own jug or sugar bowl. Just the coffee pot 😊

🤨 of course other people's weddings aren't relevant to their memories, you've missed my point entirely but thanks for that.

If you're planning to have a bit of a do, you could make a playlist on Spotify of the chart from the week they were married. We did this recently for a Golden Wedding, just put it on in the background and waited for the happy couple to realise. It went down very well.

My own wedding in 1981 was very quiet and ended in disaster, so otherwise I can't really help.

I think everyone had Eternal Beau as their wedding china, or was that later in the decade?

marinerkk2 · 23/05/2021 18:20

That's a good idea about a playlist, thanks

Following this as my parents got married in 1981 as well. I don't know much about their wedding unfortunately.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 23/05/2021 18:24

I was born that year and I know that Pope John Paul II was shot in an attempted assassination.

You’re right! It was launched in ‘81 but I had friends collecting it in the early ‘90s too. It thought it was beautiful 🤣

I think this is a lovely idea, I love threads like this. I was only 14 in 1981, but I remember the day Charles and Diana got married. It was a beautiful day, we were all so excited. Street parties and dancing and everyone happy !

JBaez · 23/05/2021 18:30

Ooh! You could have an eternal beau tea Party OP!

I first got married in 1981. Can’t remember what we had at reception, but I think there nay have been Black Forest gateaux!

This www.google.com/search?q=marks+and+spencer+dinner+set+1980&rlz=1C9BKJA_enGB866GB866&oq=marks+and+spencer+dinner+set+1980&aqs=chrome..69i57.22589j1j7&hl=en-GB&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=kNb5kvBBLim2LM design from Marks and Spencer was very popular. I had a fondue set too, probably only used once.

I had some sort of flick going on with my hair, I think everyone did whatever the length.

There weren’t that many places to eat out. Berni Inn was ver popular!

polexiaaphrodesia · 23/05/2021 18:33

My parents got married in 1981. From what I hear my nan organised most of it and my mum had very little say in the guests list, venue choice, menu etc. People phoned up to ask my Grandma what the newlyweds would like as a gift and were told towels so my parents got 12 towel bales!

somewheresorted · 23/05/2021 18:37

Oh wow that’s taken me back. My mum had that dinner set @MsDastardley

TheCanyon · 23/05/2021 18:43

My parents also got married in 81. I have utterly no idea what to give them.

BoraNatty · 23/05/2021 18:50

I got married in 1981. We had 3 pairs of bathroom scales all brown- we had 3 toilet sets (bath mat/loo seat covers ) all brown- we weren’t lucky enough to get eternal beau. We also had a huge ashtray on a stand that was a decorative piece- neither of us smoked. Not forgetting a bale of towels - brown.

Pinkandwrinkly · 23/05/2021 19:04

Ravenhead Glass !

MsDastardley · 23/05/2021 19:11

I had a also had 2 copper pictures. One was like this www.google.com/search?q=coppercraft+copper+etchings&rlz=1C9BKJA_enGB866GB866&hl=en-GB&prmd=sinv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi2s-6Bs-DwAhXYuKQKHd4bDCIQ_AUoAnoECAIQAg&biw=1112&bih=719#imgrc=f2-ksc5qs_unTM. The other was an old fashioned map of the world

I much prefer today’s styles

BoraNatty · 23/05/2021 19:13

Oh and I forgot lots of Queen Anne silver plated stuff - the factory churning it out was close by.

JBaez · 23/05/2021 19:16

Pinkandwrinkly

That takes me back!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 23/05/2021 19:21

I read married in 1981.telegrams, from far flung family.

PickAChew · 23/05/2021 19:24

You could scour a 1981 argos catalogue for inspiration issuu.com/retromash/docs/argos-no15-1981-springsummer

Chart Hits 81 volume 1 and 2 - my very first vinyl album. You can look up the track listing online....
