Fed up of other peoples dogs complicating my life.

I don't mind dogs. We don't have them because of environmental concerns - we have vegetarian pets.

However recently I am fed up as trying to arrange to meet various family members seems to be totally constrained by their dogs . Here are examples:

Lets meet up for a pub lunch - family member A - "are dogs allowed"
Lets go for a country walk - family member B "can it be dog friendly"
How about a beach visit - family member C - "will dog have to be on lead"

I want to see family - not their dogs. Why can't the dogs just stay at home ...............

We love our pets but we don't want to take them everywhere with us.

Any house with a dog will smell of dog

Utter nonsense. I don't own a a dog and never have (cat central over here) but plenty of houses with dogs don't smell of dogs. Some dogs smell rank, some smell pleasantly doggy, some don't smell at all. Same with dog houses.

Thank you!

My spaniel doesn't smell, however my Dad's lab stinks bless him 😂

@Dogoodfeelgood same! Beautiful x

SoupDragon · 22/05/2021 18:10

My spaniel stinks 😂

Sparklingbrook · 22/05/2021 18:15

Wet dog smell is horrible. Wouldn't want that while I am eating for sure.

motogogo · 22/05/2021 18:23

Just got in from a walk that included a walk through a field of sheep and back along the beach via the pub with my dog. Perfectly normal to want to take their dogs

poppycat10 · 22/05/2021 18:50

My dogs don’t smell AT ALL, neither does my house. Your kids are undoubtedly smellier than my dogs

Ha ha. Dogs do smell and so do their owners' houses. Without exception. Owners who think otherwise are deluded.

poppycat10 · 22/05/2021 18:55

It's a recent trend so I can only assume that some business owners have worked out that there's more profit to be made by welcoming dogs than not

Or just get so much aggro that they can't be bothered to say no to them anymore. And even if they lose some customers who don't like dogs around, it's worth it to avoid the aggro from the dog owners. Which I suppose is your point.

lakesidelife · 22/05/2021 19:27

My dog is bald and doesn't smell.
Sadly my old cat really stinks so we aren't any better off as a family.

Voluptuagoodshag · 22/05/2021 20:08

There was a similar thread to this a few weeks back perhaps that’s why some folk are thinking the Op has posted before. I’m with you OP I get what you mean though on a walk it’s more difficult to not include a dog.

I like dogs, well behaved dogs that don’t dominate the entire day or event. But I have huge issues with this new breed (pardon the pun) of owner who expect you to be as invested in their furbabies as they are.

Voluptuagoodshag · 22/05/2021 20:12

I made this comment on the dogs in offices thread but it’s just as appropriate here .....

Why is there now this expectation that all dogs should be accommodated everywhere? It’s great that dogs aren’t being left alone for long as that is wrong but folk decide to get a dog then expect everything else that went before to stop and it’s ALL about the dog.
I have two cats but I don’t talk about their every whim in great detail to all and sundry. Dominating a conversation in such a way about anything is just rude!
Most of my friends have dogs now but only one is well trained. Another is pretty decent but barks at any other dog. The rest are a pain in the arse and I’m angry at the owners for letting them get that way.
I welcome them all into my home but:

  • I do not want them on the furniture
  • I do not want them upstairs
  • I do not want them in garden unsupervised so owner doesn’t know where they’ve shat
  • I do not want owner sitting getting hammered whilst dog rolls around in its own shit then comes and sniffs round the bbq 🤮
  • I do not want your dog constantly barking
  • I will not speak to dog in baby language
  • I will not speak about the dog other than in passing, I do not want it to dominate our conversation
  • I do not want dog jumping up on me or the kids
  • I do not want your dog chewing my broom
  • and I most certainly do not want your dog trying to shag my leg all night.

And being outside isn’t much better. I have witnessed among my pals with dogs:

  • letting it off leash on a beach where it ran amok, knocked over a kid and ran through a family having a picnic, which was subsequently ruined
  • letting it off leash where it ran into a field of cows and got kicked.
  • having it on extendable leash and almost garrotting a passing cyclist who fell off his bike
  • just trying to walk beside a dog on one of those leashes is hopeless as it constantly crosses back and forth in front of you like a moveable tripping hazard
  • running in front of my bike
  • jumping up on me whilst out for a run
  • being chased down by two dogs whilst out on bike in park where they attacked me
  • constant shouting on dog so you can’t have a proper conversation without interruptions
  • carrying a massive stick about six feet long then running past folk whacking them with it
  • jumping up with muddy paws and ruining clean clothes for the day
  • leaving dog shit

All this and I still like dogs but the entitled owners need a good slapping

Volcanoexplorer · 22/05/2021 20:19

@Voluptuagoodshag brilliant post. I like dogs, but 100% agree with you. Plus I’m fed up of people treating dogs like children - they’re not. They’re dogs!

JBaez · 23/05/2021 12:15

Yes to everything you have just written.
No doubt there are people reading it who will say ‘My dog doesn’t do any of those things and neither do I’ and we’re back to square one! Grin

Yep!

I still can't over that some people think their dog doesn't smell of dog 😂 hilarious! And deluded! thats like saying humans don't smell after not showering for a few days.

I wonder why they get a non-smelly dog groomed. Seems like a waste of money to me

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 23/05/2021 13:15

BTW @Voluptuagoodshag once again great post I'm pleased you also shared that here

wishes1111 · 23/05/2021 13:45

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop I wouldn't pay a groomer for a bath, I do that at home.

Smelly and non smelly dogs need their fur cut, nails trimmed, ears cleaned etc.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 23/05/2021 13:57

No it would be thinking where the fuck are the humans, I need to go out for a piss.

Have you considered perhaps the dogs are an excuse not to go.

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2021 14:05

Yes, dog shampoo is a thing. Grin Also doesn't the groomer have to squeeze their anal glands or something? High maintenance.

TheMNChicken · 23/05/2021 14:54

"I wonder why they get a non-smelly dog groomed. Seems like a waste of money to me"

That's like saying only smelly people go to the hairdresser.

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2021 14:58

I don’t see the comparison. The hairdresser washes and cuts the hair on your head, they don’t shower and shampoo your whole body. Grin

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/05/2021 15:00

I feel your pain. A friend brought her dog on a family beach trip a few years back. She had an absolute strop when we wouldn't go on the dog friendly beach. She sat on a wall nearby staring at us the whole time.

She was told not to bring the dog.

TheMNChicken · 23/05/2021 15:01

"I don’t see the comparison. The hairdresser washes and cuts the hair on your head, they don’t shower and shampoo your whole body."

...it may surprise you to hear that dogs have hair all over their body. Dogs don't go to be groomed just because they smell bad.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/05/2021 15:12

Don't get me started on friends who have brought their dogs to my house. I used to have a crazy cat who attacked dogs, they didn't believe me. That did not end well.

Now I have two cats who just aren't keen on dogs. If you bring your dog with you it cannot come in. My cats take priority in my home.

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2021 15:45

No surprise because that’s exactly what I was getting at. The hairdresser doesn’t need to do a human’s whole body. But why we are comparing dog groomers with hairdressers I’m not quite sure. My hairdresser has never offered to squeeze my anal glands, clean my ears or clip my claws. 🤷‍♀️
AlicjaCross · 23/05/2021 15:51

Hopefully they will realise that humans are more important than dogs

Dear me you are a sad sack 🤣
