Are potatoes annoying?

bellropes · 18/05/2021 15:54

I'm low carbing due to being pre diabetic and needing to lose weight.

I've never been keen on potatoes, but meals are so much easier to prepare when no potatoes are involved. Protein and vegetables or salad and there you are, meal ready.

They're a faff to prepare, you have to decide what to do with them, they take ages to cook, they fall on the floor and roll away and they don't have a lot of taste. I find them needy and attention seeking.

Anybody else of this opinion?

(disclaimer: lighthearted thread, I'm not knocking potato eaters.)

I love potatoes. I feel if I explain all the ways that potatoes are wonderful it will make you weep for all the spuds you are having to forgo for the sake of your health.

MarshaBradyo · 18/05/2021 15:57

Funny

I make them for dc even though I stick to low carb, I think they’re great generally - versatile, roasted are yummy, mashed good for youngest, baked easy.

But they bug me as they sprout before I can use them sometimes and I’m convinced they used to last longer.

I love eating them but almost never ever cook them (on the incredibly rare occasions that I need to make dinner).
They are almost always at least a 2 step process, peel/parboil and then do something else with them. Even if you don’t peel them, they’re still faffy.
Exceptions being jacket potatoes (acceptable) or boiled (boring bland fuckers).
I cba with them!

Nordstrom · 18/05/2021 15:59

No! Potatoes are life. No meal cannot be improved with the addition of potatoes 🥔

Creamy mash, dauphinois, roast, sautéed...give me ALL the potatoes

lubeybooby · 18/05/2021 15:59

I'm having a very grumpy day where I find everything annoying so yes, potatoes can get in the sea

(I love all forms of potato usually)

chickenninja · 18/05/2021 16:00

My mum used to make potatoes with everything every day. I think it's a faff.
So much easier to have rice or pasta than to stand there peeling, boiling, roasting, mashing..

You should get an air fryer. Chop potatoes into chips or wedges, put in the air fryer for 10 mins, shake the basket, back in for another 10 mins, done! Healthy and delicious!

New potatoes boiled are a different beast to big boiled potatoes. Delicious with butter and salt.

Not low carb though...

@PurpleDaisies True. My comment is more relevant for some other posters than OP.

TheChosenTwo · 18/05/2021 16:06

No way @PurpleDaisies - dh loves new potatoes but I just think they’re so grim Grin

Accidentallydeletedoopsss · 18/05/2021 16:06

Potatoes are the best food owing to their versatility.
What could be better than a humble spud?

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 18/05/2021 16:07

Potatoes are fantastic. If they don't have much taste you're cooking them wrongly! They have far more nutritional value than most carbs - infinitely better than pasta or bread. They have potassium and vitamin c and fibre and are delicious...

Ive lost 7 stone this year by intermittent fasting with minimal processed food, bread and sugar but potatoes remain firmly on the menu! Potatoes are excellent and never roll away - seriously woman what are you doing with them - playing football with them won't improve the flavour Wink Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/05/2021 16:12

...and you can make them into batteries!

(they won't fit into a TV remote though Sad )

PetuniaPot · 18/05/2021 16:14

With hungry children in the house I really appreciate potatoes nowadays.

purrswhileheeats · 18/05/2021 16:15

Potatoes are the only carbs I eat, they are the BEST carbs 🥔

My wedges recipe (even though no one has asked for it):

Toss big chunks (unpeeled) of spuds in sunflower oil, lemon juice, salt & pepper, oregano and cayenne pepper. Roast for 40 minutes at 220c. HEAVEN!

Sometimes I go crazy and use Chinese five spice instead of oregano Grin

PetuniaPot · 18/05/2021 16:16

I know what you mean about them rolling away. Rice is easier. Or get the kids to peel them.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/05/2021 16:18

I've been low-carbing for two years now, and miss potatoes the most of all the carbs. Creamy mash; buttery new potatoes; fluffy jacket potatoes with crispy skins; glorious, golden roasties; hot, vinegary chips....

Yeah, I really miss potatoes.

bellropes · 18/05/2021 16:18

Wow, all this potato love 😃

Nothing to do with the fact that you get through the bag quicker when feeding an adult from the bag as well then! Grin
ragged · 18/05/2021 16:21

I luffs spuds (!!)

Not so keen on bread, though.
I eat some bread, but wouldn't miss it if never again.

I cannot understand Bread Love at all.

PetuniaPot · 18/05/2021 16:21

I feel sorry for spuds: they had already had a hard time keeping up with the newer carbs and then along came low carbing.

ragged · 18/05/2021 16:22

Rice...

Dont' get me started. The only white rice I (sort of) like is basmati.

Rest is run & hide from it trigger.

joystir59 · 18/05/2021 16:23

Can barely be arsed doing anything remotely cooking related beyond toast at the moment (widowed). Cook meat veg and potatoes for the dog but not for meal. Awful things.
