Bleeding 🩸 after sex whilst pregnant

This may he too much info but has anyone experienced bleeding after sex?
I have read on several places that this is normal however the amount of fresh blood that come out did not seem “normal”. Just wanting to know if any other mums to be have had this and what steps you took following the incident.

Not normal. Get checked now.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 16/05/2021 13:44

Your cervix is a lot more sensitive during pregnancy but you shouldn’t be bleeding a lot after sex, it should just be a few spots at best. You need to get checked out.

MrsColinRobinson · 16/05/2021 13:46

I had this in my first two pregnancies. Speak to your midwife or GP. I was sent for a scan at 6 weeks the first time and that fortunately showed a heartbeat. We didn't enjoy sex often during pregnancy. At times it was a scary amount of blood. I'm pleased to say all my babies survived to full term. Don't panic and speak to your healthcare provider asap.

You should get checked out. However, I had this during pregnancy - after sex and at random intervals at other points - and everything was fine. They couldn't find a cause. So hopefully all will be OK for you.

Your cervix is more vascular in pregnancy so spotting after sex can be quite common. However, we always advise getting checked each time just in case the bleeding is actually being caused by something else.

Thanks guys I will call EPU however I know they are likely to fob me off.
I wish the midwife was working today.

It can be normal, or it might not be. You don't know until you're checked over.

If it helps, I had bleeding in my first trimester trigged by sex and straining due to constipation. It was all from my cervix and everything was fine.

Thats reassuring. I am waiting to be seen by the consultant at EPU hoping its nothing serious. They wont be able to scan me today but will check the cervix and if needed they will scan me during the week xx

Was yours spotting or more of a bleed? Glad everything was okay for you !! X

My cervix feels swollen/sore so a bit worrying.

I'm sure everything will be fine op, I'd consider abstaining from sex for a while.

Peachee · 16/05/2021 16:37

I had a heavy bleed when I was around 7 weeks after sex in my first pregnancy. My poor DP was covered.. I was mortified and we were both really concerned.. TMI but when I say heavy bleed it had clots/jelly and was fresh red blood..
Had a scan 2 days later and thankfully everything was ok. I was absolutely convinced it was the end and even told the sonographer not to be concerned if they need to let me know it’s bad news as I already expected the worst.. somehow everything was fine.. apparently lots and lots of blood floods to that area so that explained that.
Are you ok? X

@LittleOverWhelmed sorry to hear about the loss of your first. I have had a miscarriage a few month ago and its the worst. Glad everything was well with your son xx

Thank you still sat at EPU waiting to be seen.
The bleeding has subsidised to spotting - hoping it is what others have said and just a change of hormones and cervix x

Sparechange · 16/05/2021 18:06

I had this while pregnant and it was a sub chorionic haemorrhage

The usual course of action is a total sex ban until it heals (no orgasms, they can make it worse) and possibly progesterone supplements and an extra scan to check it depending on how big it is

Mimi94 · 16/05/2021 18:29

@Sparechange thanks that’s quite reassuring x

My bleed seems very similar to yours. How far along are you? I have to say I was extra cautious after that and the midwife told me to have gentle sex.. I don’t think we did anything until I was in my third trimester or maybe nearing the end of the second.. everything was fine by that point..

VimFuego101 · 16/05/2021 19:04

@Mimi94 - it was a bleed that filled a pad in an hour or so, definitely more than just spotting.

AhaShakeHeartbreak12 · 16/05/2021 19:06

I had very light pink spots when I wiped after sex through my pregnancy but nothing heavy

Mimi94 · 16/05/2021 19:07

@Peachee yeah I think I will probably go on a sex ban Blush
Currently 11 weeks

I had bleeding after sex and at other times. I was told if there was little haematomas they've usually passed by the time they've scanned you. Every time I had an ultrasound all was fine. In the end I got fed up so they offered to do a pelvic exam. It was uncomfortable but I found out the cause of the bleeds was harmless (cervical erosion).

I hope your appointment at the EPU goes well. If the scan doesn't show anything, you can always ask them to do a pelvic exam to check your cervix, since you mentioned it was a bit inflamed. They usually also swab you to check for any infections while doing that. xx
