So this weekend we are meant to be having a garden celebration for DM, about 25 people due to come. The weather is looking awful all week and due to rain all day on the actual day. We’re all feeling a bit miserable and the idea of being outside in the rain isn’t appealing. Thing is though DM has been really excited (bought a new frock and shoes, v unlike her) and we’ve already bought food and drink for it. She’s not really giving much in way of what she wants to do in light of weather.

Just don’t know what should do though. People are still up for up it as looking forward to see everyone but can’t help but think it’s going to be a bit of a miserable wash out. Urghhh I hate this weather 🙄

This weekend as it today?

It's a bit late to cancel now isn't it?

Have you got a cover? A pop up gazebo or something similar?

Egghead81 · 16/05/2021 07:50

Did you not arrange gazebos?

Egghead81 · 16/05/2021 07:50

Not like the crappy weather has snuck up in us.

MaggieFS · 16/05/2021 07:53

You've got a week - beg/borrow/steal a load of gazebos or if you've got budget get a quote for one big-ish marquee.
Ask on local Facebook groups - people may be willing to lend.

newlabelwriter · 16/05/2021 07:55

Have ordered a gazebo but garden will still be wet and still only 13degrees. Weather was showing as partially sunny until a few days ago where I am but has now changed to rain all week.

DD did a little celebration yesterday . 2 gazebos and the barbecue under shelter. It rained occasionally but it was cosy enough. People just need to dress appropriately .

midnightstar66 · 16/05/2021 08:00

The weather forecast is chafing really rapidly at the moment, yesterday morning the forecast was for rain all day then it changed in the space of an hour and ended up a beautiful sunny day. Today's forecast has changed 3 times since last night. You can't yet know what next weekend will do. Get a gazebo organised just in case

newlabelwriter · 16/05/2021 08:00

@sandgrown good to hear, although need to speak to DM about her frock, not sure it’s v appropriate weather wise 😂

We had a little celebration of 6 people a couple of weekends ago. The guests knew the weather forecast and dressed appropriately; party dresses and wellies! It was lovely and I'm glad I didn't cancel.

Bluntness100 · 16/05/2021 08:00

As long as everyone has appropriate footwear and jackets I can’t quite see the issue, do you just not want to do it?

midnightstar66 · 16/05/2021 08:00

Winter coat over the frock will solve that if needed

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 16/05/2021 08:01

You can't rely on a weather forecast a day ahead never mind a week Grin

I was due to meet some friends for a walk yesterday and right up until Friday night it said it would be raining all day. We didn't even have a shower until tea time

Organising any outdoor event needs a wet weather plan though and you've ordered the gazebo now you just have to stress all week Smile

Your DM is a grown woman! Let her wear her frock and decide for herself if it's not appropriate!

Lotsachocolateplease · 16/05/2021 08:02

Also make sure you have plenty on blankets or ask people to bring their own. We’re British - we’re used to bad weather and we adapt!!

itsgettingwierd · 16/05/2021 08:05

Personally I'd say embrace it!

This has been a shit year but if it's taught us anything it's you can find fun in things you'd dread the idea of before!

I bought new wellies and a knee length coat in September and they've had loads of use. I've actually enjoyed being outdoors and even BBQs in gazebos have been fun. We had an Xmas buffet outdoor a few days before Xmas and layered up well and it was different but enjoyable.

You can get 3 sided gazebos and you may be able to hire one?

newlabelwriter · 16/05/2021 08:45

Thank you all so much, am feeling so much better about it now. Okay am going to go with a rainy Glastonbury theme frocks and wellies! Have put feelers out re gazebos and keeping fingers crossed re sudden weather improvement. 😊

We had DDs 7th birthday party yesterday in the garden, smaller group obviously due to rule of 6 but it piddled it down all day. We managed with a couple of gazebos and we got hold of some huge tarps which we put under the gazebo cover as an extra layer as the fabric covers they come with are showerproof rather than waterproof. They still had a great time, we all got a bit damp but mainly stayed dry while we could stay under cover. The temperature was about 11 degrees but didn't feel that cold.

No idea of safari but hopefully someone can advise that way soon!

newlabelwriter · 16/05/2021 09:52

Thanks so much all, we’re all feeling a lot more optimistic about it now. 😊
