Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

Sonning - 2 parts though - one tip of Woodley on A4 end and what I always think of as Sonning, on the other side of the A4 with the bridge & Coppa etc. I did not even know there was a Woodley side of Sonning until recently until I saw Sonning Golf club. Both nice but suspect more snooty north of the Thames.

@SpeakingFranglais

Yes you can quickly tell if you are in a snobby area by the people you meet in normal circumstances- I’m working in a hospital in West Sussex having trained in the Midlands and there is a stark difference between the attitude/ entitlement I get from patients. They clearly think they are better than me because maybe they see me as a “foreigner” but are often baffled when I speak (accent very southern/Home Counties) and explain to the years of training/experience/sheer hard work I’ve had to do to get to this level.

@480Widdio

Sutton Coldfield!! Not at all posh,lived there for 18years,it’s just a suburb of Birmingham and very rough around the edges.
I was at school with quite a few girls from Sutton Coldfield - was definitely considered snobby then. Has gone downhill over the years, but Four Oaks Park is still up there!
Nataliafalka · 16/05/2021 09:38

Hampstead garden suburb. My goodness that’s a whole other world

girasol · 16/05/2021 09:41

@PictureNest

Forgot to add two actually

Basildon and Luton

Luton?!!!! (Spits out tea) I can think of a lot of words to describe Luton… “snobby” would not feature anywhere in my top 1000.

Ah, sorry, have just realised you were being ironic. I don’t like to think of myself as naive but seems I am!

DinosApple · 16/05/2021 09:41

Burnham Market is full of second home owners.

KlIt does take away somewhat from the normal local folk.

bethmc93 · 16/05/2021 09:45

@sandgrown agreed! even the small areas like poulton are becoming abit snooty

campion · 16/05/2021 09:50

@DappledThings

But how do you know that they consider themselves better, rather than just preferring to live where they do? I don’t understand how a place can be ‘snobby’ Because I used to regularly hear people complaining that people thought Solihull was in Birmingham rather than right next to it as if being part of Birmingham was in my way demeaning or important. Because there was a campaign for Solihull to get its own phone code and not be 0121 to lessen the association with Birmingham. It was all so silly and yes, snobby, about Birmingham.
Some Silhillians are also rather miffed that they're lumbered with a Birmingham postcode. The shameShock
SpookieDookie · 16/05/2021 09:50

@TheFutureIs

Chichester, lots of the residents think it's tremendously posh. Having worked in a secondary school I've come across some of the worst deprivation in my career there
So right. Chichester is a snobby hot spot.
DietrichandDiMaggio · 16/05/2021 09:56

@InDeedyDo

Ha ha yes Oxford. I went for work and asked someone where the University was. They took the piss out of me because it's all around the city. I mean there was no need to be an arse about it, even if you are asked 500 times a day.
I wouldn't call that snobby though. I'd just think you were a tourist who had made no effort to find out anything about where you wanted to visit. Presumably if your work visit involved visiting a university building you would know the name of it.
Rosehip10 · 16/05/2021 09:57

@Nataliafalka it's sad about hampstead garden suburb as its vision was a nice place to live from workers/artisan cottages to huge houses with community facilities for all. Now you would need to be hugely wealthy to live in the small workman's cottage!

Bettyboopawoop · 16/05/2021 09:58

Wrea Green is not posh.

Pyewackect · 16/05/2021 10:09

Envy is the art of counting the other fellow's blessings and not your own !.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2021 10:11

I worked in Solihull for years. We got a letter addressed to 'Place of work, road name, 'Sunnyhole' once. Shock

Sitchervice · 16/05/2021 10:11

Laughing at people putting Winchester down. Lived there for 3 years, it's not snobby at all, just looks it because of old buildings exct, My husband had a door slammed in his face by chav family for asking them to be a little quieter at 12pm at night.

Bath is probably fairly snobby but when I think snobby I think ritch people looking down at people with their large noses. And I'm sure there are non snobby areas of Bath even if they do charge £18+ for an hours parking.

Probably some small villages like Lacock and Avebury are snobby.

Oldraver · 16/05/2021 10:17

I think the snobbiest places are sometimes the nice villages near to not-so-nice towns. It’s so easy to feel “better than” in your pleasant village where the nearby town is a shithole

I live in West Oxfordshire in a military town surrounded by quaint Cotswoldy villages (though some not so quaint as they think). When asked where you live you can see peoples faces drop

One woman in a local cheese shop pulled a really horrible face and was quiet condescending...well yes we are locals who would probably spend money regularily in your shop....... not now

sandgrown · 16/05/2021 10:20

@bethmc93 I agree but at the rate of building Poulton will soon be joined to Blackpool anyway !

Thewinterofdiscontent · 16/05/2021 10:23

@orangecinnamon

I'd agree with Chichester, it's nice and all but not that great. Lots of nimbyism. They like to claim a nearby coastal village as 'theirs' in the local press/ local foodie shopping type magazines , when it is actually in Hampshire and woe betide they would mention the perfectly ordinary towns next door to the district. It really grates on me. Anything slightly subversive or with a bit of life is frowned upon...street art, nightclubs etc. Traffic is awful, there are clear issues in investment in the city centre versus the wider district.
I don’t agree with Chichester for previously given reasons.

I do suspect however that it’s Emsworth that wants to be Chichester rather than the other way round. Emsworth is Havant with the notorious Leigh Park.
My DS goes to the College in Havant. It’s also a vocational course rather than A levels. You’d think I condemned him to a life on the streets from some of the reactions.

Those of you who think you get disproving looks for driving cars that aren’t expensive- I really think this is in your head, I can’t imagine anyone else is really interested.

We have a family SUV that is £££ & honestly I get much more respect from other £££ SUV drivers then why I drive our cheap old run around. I've also driven a white van, brilliant! everyone just gets out of your way 😆

Hebden Bridge. Likes to think of itself as inclusive, as long as you are ultra left wing, vegan and alternative.
