Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

Solihull full of ten Bob millionaires

wotchhha · 16/05/2021 07:20

None of us can help where we came from/ what we were born into

Exactly why no one should be snobby!

Triphazard101 · 16/05/2021 07:22

In my (humble) opinion a person can be snobby, a town can't.
A lot of the places listed are very expensive to live but most, if not all will have some diversity. There will be people living in so called posh or snobby areas who bought property years ago (like 1960s or 70s) when it wasnt mega expensive.
There will be snobby people all over the place quite a lot on MN , but merely living in a relatively expensive area doesnt automatically mean you are a snob.
Considering the percentage of people on MN who claim to earn multiples of 6 figures I imagine a lot of them must live (or own second homes) in a lot of these places!

@PictureNest

Forgot to add two actually

Basildon and Luton

Basildon????

The most I thought when driving in was how healthy a place it must be. Pretty much everyone was wearing a tracksuit!

Imissmoominmama · 16/05/2021 07:26

Lytham St Anne’s- except really it’s a bit Botox, fur coat and no knickers.

HelpfulBelle · 16/05/2021 07:27

I live in Oxfordshire and used to live in Oxford (also went to the uni).

Despite a fair bit of keeping up with the Joneses (quite a lot of talk of Soho Farmhouse from some 🙄) it's really not snobby. There are areas of deprivation, and I've made lovely normal friends here. Our kids all go to state primary/secondary and are happy.

When I go home (small city near Wales), I'm aware that there's more racism/small mindedness and the schools are far worse. I don't think an awareness of this is snobbery, it's just a preference for living somewhere a bit nicer.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 16/05/2021 07:30

Barnes
Windsor

longwayoff · 16/05/2021 07:36

Basildon and Luton? What? Blimey, have a look at your standards for what constitutes snobbery. Bloody hell.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 16/05/2021 07:38

Yarm
Northallerton
Barnard Castle.

Rosehip10 · 16/05/2021 07:39

Considering it's history and background ideals (houses for all classes together, facilities for everyone etc) its sad how snobby Bourneville in Birmingham has become.

SoosanCarter · 16/05/2021 07:39

@wewereliars

Cobham hands down
Absolutely. Waitrose car park has huge spaces for huge cars.
Rosehip10 · 16/05/2021 07:41

@SakuraEdenSwan1 Yarm yes (people pretend Teeside/Middlesborough doesn't exist!), but Northallerton?? Aren't most there wanting to be in (relatively snobby) Thirsk?

Blyatiful · 16/05/2021 07:41

Actually I think most of Berkshire, except Slough, Bracknell and Reading, and South Oxfordshire. My Gran lived in Windsor, in a bog standard terrace behind the barracks. I looked up her house the other week and it sold for £750,000 a few years ago. Obviously they’ve done it up a bit and it’s now got an inside loo and a bathroom, but 3/4 of a million, seriously?

Went into a South Oxfordshire pub a few years ago with a mate, and the landlady said to us “Did you want a drink?” Grin My mate said well, we thought we might, but I think we’ll just use your loo and go elsewhere!

doadeer · 16/05/2021 07:45

Darras Hall in newcastle

Roselilly36 · 16/05/2021 07:45

Woodbridge, Alderley Edge, Southwold.

Latelatelate · 16/05/2021 07:47

I agree with Wilmslow
For such a downtrodden little town centre it does have airs above it’s station.
Nice houses (in parts) though!

EversoDelighted · 16/05/2021 07:48

Yes to Cobham Waitrose car park, I drive a very small car and it is quite intimidating parking there.

I don't think Farnham, Alresford, Winchester, Hartley Wintney are too bad but perhaps that's because I have lived in Beaconsfield, which definitely gets my vote for most snobbish, I lived in the new town for a while and remember going to a pub in the old town where I have never felt so out of place. The Chalfonts too.

sandgrown · 16/05/2021 07:50

@Imissmoominmama you are right about Lytham St Anne’s . There is a definite pecking order on the Fylde Coast. Blackpool at the bottom then St Anne’s then Ansdell and Lytham at the top. God forbid you get it wrong ! The PP who mentioned Wrea Green was correct . The residents there also fail to mention their proximity to Blackpool.

longwayoff · 16/05/2021 07:52

Pp "I saw someone busking playing the harp" GrinGrinGrin You win the thread Star

UnluckyMe · 16/05/2021 07:59

Why Harpenden, Beaconsfield and Berko? Just the average joes living there.

I'd say Hampstead and Chelsea!/Fulham area. Snobbery galore!

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 16/05/2021 08:02

@BatleyTownswomensGuild

Lived in Guildford briefly as a new graduate. I'm convinced nobody in that town speaks because used to find people recoiling in horror if I made casual conversation in a shop or at the bus stop. Was incredibly lonely and moved on after a year.

Conversely, friendliest place I've ever lived is the North East. Total opposite experience. Smile

Yea we love chatting up here, North East is always friendly!
Fizbosshoes · 16/05/2021 08:04

"I saw someone busking playing the harp"

But i would see that as posh, rather than snobby?

And the expression "fur coat and no knickers" which has been mentioned a few times - isnt that just as judgy as someone being snobby?

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 16/05/2021 08:08

Didn't enjoy the atmosphere in Cheltenham centre.

orangecinnamon · 16/05/2021 08:09

I'd agree with Chichester, it's nice and all but not that great. Lots of nimbyism. They like to claim a nearby coastal village as 'theirs' in the local press/ local foodie shopping type magazines , when it is actually in Hampshire and woe betide they would mention the perfectly ordinary towns next door to the district. It really grates on me.
Anything slightly subversive or with a bit of life is frowned upon...street art, nightclubs etc.

Traffic is awful, there are clear issues in investment in the city centre versus the wider district.

travellinglighter · 16/05/2021 08:10
@runningpram

I seem to remember them lobbying their MP to change their address to Deeside, on account of their CH postcode which they share with Blacon and Birkenhead
Absolute fuckwits.
So they lobbied to remove a Cheshire post code for the horror that is Deeside? Flint, Connahs Quay and Shotton? Have they ever been there? Guaranteed not to be Snobby in Desside.
