Snobbiest places in the UK?

Following from similar threads about overrated and underrated places in the UK... where are the snobbiest places in the UK?

From the places I've been, I'd say Harrogate, Oxford, and the rest of the Cotswolds.

OP posts:

I’d take “snobby” over stabby any day of the week.

Stabby? Wow!

queenofthenorthwest · 15/05/2021 23:53

Chester.

A family member refuses to live in a
Liverpool postcode and they love Chester.

Chester is lovely don't get me wrong but they are having the same problems there they would have in Liverpool.

@tonimitchell

Talkwhilstyouwalk I’m working class through and though but my kids go to private school and it’s amazing to see the dynamics of the parents.

Middle class climb over themselves to prove how established or well off they are. Everything is about perception. Upper classes give zero fucks and don’t care if their kids are crawling out of of the car looking like their kids hair hair have been brushed with a toffee apple and their tie is hanging off.

True story in my experience!

My area is full of middle class people thinking they are upper class!

Not sure what I am now then....my kids go into school looking like they have been dragged through a hedge most mornings Grin

I don’t think anywhere in Trafford includes Trafford as part of the address, does it? The county is Greater Manchester, and the historic county either Lancashire or Cheshire.

Re snobby places, I agree this is just a thread full of wealthy or relatively wealthy places. Anywhere like this is going to attract insecure types who make a thing of it, but there are also plenty of people not like that. I know a few of the places that have come up, and while there’s no denying they do attract flashy prats, I don’t think it’s fair to label all or even most of the residents that way.

Also not keen on how these threads bring out the approving comments on ‘old’ money v new.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 16/05/2021 00:05

Haha no....my parents our Cheshire on their address but technically it is Greater Manchester and there is no getting away from that.

Disagree with the new money/old money thing though, it appears there may be difference....albeit a questionable one based stereotypes.

  • put Cheshire in their address.

I agree about Harrogate, OP. Horrible place, full of shop assistants who openly sneer at you when you go to buy something.

bellie710 · 16/05/2021 00:08

Basildon I would struggle with, Luton - have you actually been to Luton?
Harpenden is maybe on the edge of snobby, they have a Waitrose so might make the cut!

Cotswolds I would say the locals are lovely but the 2nd home owners make people think it is snobby!

All the places mentioned have issues everywhere has good and bad areas but each to their own, not sure snobby is how you define them?

tulips27 · 16/05/2021 00:08

Another vote for Bath from me!

Though I realise this has also happened to me in Oxford, at SpaceNK (perhaps I’m just someone who elicits sneers?), so I’d say your list is pretty accurate.
Airyfairymarybeary · 16/05/2021 00:13

Henley!
We went to the park there on a Sunday morning and all the men wore leather shoes, shirts and blazers to take their kids to the park. Not a hoody or trainer insight!

Old money and new money are two different things.

Same as class and wealth.

You cannot buy yourself in to the class system no matter how much money you have.

Tbh there is really only two classes - upper class and working class.

Yes, that hoary old Mn favourite about dukes driving around in knackered cars, their holey tweeds charmingly covered in Labrador hair and being twinkly to their tenants vs the foul-mouthed nouveaux riches drumming you out of town for your lack of Cristal and a monogrammed helicopter is still going strong.
Talkwhilstyouwalk · 16/05/2021 00:30

Anywhere there is a Jojo Maman Bebe?

Watchingstars88 · 16/05/2021 00:30

Solihull

There is a Jojo Maman Bebe there, albeit an outlet....

@Talkwhilstyouwalk - to be fair, if my post includes a county mine times out of ten it will say Cheshire. Even from the council! It’s like databases haven’t been updated since the 70s. So I’m not surprised people write it themselves. I don’t because I’m a massive pedant on things like this.

And you are quite right! I always put Greater Manchester on any mail that I send them just to make sure they know 😂

chipsarnie · 16/05/2021 00:40

Wanstead. With increasingly large chunks of Walthamstow and Leytonstone.

Byllis · 16/05/2021 00:47

@Talkwhilstyouwalk - excellent work. Good to know I’m not alone in my campaign!

Pinetreesfall · 16/05/2021 00:55

Rock, Cornwall.
We don't drive an old car but it's not a Range Rover and we got the last parking space in the car park. My gawd the looks we got!!

Haha, yes it's ever so posh there. Ask the locals what they think of the new pad that Gordon Ramsay is building/may have finished building there......new money, don't approve to say the least!

Salcombe- love it though!

Pinetreesfall · 16/05/2021 01:03

@wheresmymojo absolutely! I used to live in Sunningdale and it's like living in a bubble. Thankfully now I live in Devon where the people are real - both personality and body parts!
