Is it worth getting? I know fewer/no ads? What are the other benefits?

I play on Alexa and iPhone can't seem to skip to next song on iPhone and even on Alexa there's a limited number of skips?

Think I'm also being limited on what playlists I can access?

Would love to know more

I'd highly recommend it, no adverts at all, every playlist can be downloaded, no limit on how playlists you can create, you can skip as many times as you like, every genre of music is available, as well as podcasts and audiobooks.
I could never use it without premium, the free version is dreadful

willstarttomorrow · 15/05/2021 16:47

Certainly worth it. I remember as a music mad teen saving up to buy albums. For the same cost as one album a few decades ago I can access almost everything, create playlists, download and also there are several podcasts available. It is also not much more for a family membership although as there is only me and DC we make do with my membership. She uses it far more than I do.

Vinto · 15/05/2021 16:52

I couldn't use the free version, it's my main source of music and I listen for hours a day every day.

It works through my car and through sky so I can have it on at home while I'm in the kitchen cooking dinner. Honestly music is a big part of my life and Spotify is the medium I use deliver that.

As pp said definitely worth it. I have premium family, 5 people have have their own account. It's about £15 pm.

Champagneforeveryone · 15/05/2021 17:00

Yes yes to all of the above, though we use Deezer rather than Spotify.

It's £15 a month for a family subscription and it's probably the thing we use most.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/05/2021 17:01

Love mine, my husband and I use it when we go to the gym, don’t have to download to play, no adds - great for a run

Graphista · 15/05/2021 17:02

The ads are driving me nuts! Especially as I'm getting local ads for companies I hate.

Sounds good to me.

Am I better signing up via iPhone app or on Alexa? Is there a difference?

I haven't really figured out the Alexa part, purely by happenstance I've found I can play via the iPhone app and if I'm near the echo I can select to play through that BUT I can't start it by voice through the Alexa nor choose/change playlists it just plays a random Spotify playlist.

Good point about the price of the album v premium price for loads of music.

Are new albums available to listen to on Spotify? I'm trying to not limit myself to my usual 80's favourites and listen to some new stuff at least occasionally (feeling old)

Does Spotify need 3G or WiFi?

Cocolapew · 15/05/2021 17:07

@YesIDoLoveCrisps

Does Spotify need 3G or WiFi?
Yes to download the tracks but then they can be played without it.
Vinto · 15/05/2021 17:12

Yes, new music is released in hard copy and to be streamed at the same time. The back catalogue is massive and it's got great rabbit warrens to go down to discover old favourite artists or new artists you've never hear during of but recommended based on what you do like.

Once you have Spotify premium you can also download playlists on to your device to be listened to when you don't have 3G or wifi, so great for plane journeys etc.

(Is it obvious I love it??)

Graphista · 15/05/2021 17:12

I'm housebound at the moment (but hoping it's not permanent) and it's good to know about the downloading/using thing. Does downloading use ip loads of memory?

Totally worth for me, I could never go back to basic Spotify now.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 15/05/2021 17:14

@Cocolapew thanks

Milomonster · 15/05/2021 17:33

I use Spotify on my PC. The free version allows all the skips in the world but iPhone version does not. For the car, I create my playlist beforehand, remove annoying songs, etc so that skips isn’t an issue. I did a 5 hour long journey and there were hardly any ads.

InFiveMins · 15/05/2021 17:39

Love Spotify premium couldn't ever use the free version, too many ads.

Well worth it as I listen to it every day.

hilariousnamehere · 15/05/2021 17:41

Couldn't be without it :)

OrangeBananaFish · 15/05/2021 17:44

Another post about the greatness of premium. I also have the family version. I use it constantly so does DD1. Definitely worth the money for me.

CatFaceCats · 15/05/2021 17:45

I have Apple Music (family) and we love it. Me, my mum and both kids use it constantly.
And with Alexa, I can enable the Apple Music skill, so I just ask Alexa and she defaults to my Apple Music. I don’t have to use it as a speaker if that makes sense? I’d assume you can do the same with Spotify.

QueenOfPain · 15/05/2021 17:48

I’ve had a Spotify premium subscription for the last 10+ years and it’s a non-negotiable expense in my life.

It’s basically like having (almost) every piece of recorded music instantly accessible.

There are no ads at all with premium.
Access to every single playlist.
Option to make your own and then download those onto your devices so you can listen to them even when you’ve no connectivity/without using data.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 15/05/2021 17:50

Worth every penny!
I love the playlists and being able to download the tracks

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 15/05/2021 17:51

Also a fan of premium what's the advantages of down loading songs though?

Serpenta · 15/05/2021 17:53

I love Spotify Premium.

But I also buy digital downloads (usually from Bandcamp) when a band/artist I love releases an album, to show support, as the royalties from Spotify are just paltry.

Cocolapew · 15/05/2021 18:05

I download so I can listen offline through my Bluetooth car thingy.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 15/05/2021 18:11

Omg I've had premium for years and was today years old when I realised they had audiobooks!!!!

QueenOfPain · 15/05/2021 18:20

@Puttingouthefirewithgasoline

Advantages of downloading songs;

Say you’re on holiday in a hotel with expensive or time constrained WiFi and you don’t want to use up expensive roaming data?

You’re on a plane?

You want to listen to Spotify while on a long journey in the car and you don’t have unlimited data?

You’re anywhere without a good signal? Camping? On a hike?
