I just ate a Belgian bun

I went to the shop to buy some spinach.
They didn't have any. So I bought a Belgian bun.

For various reasons the last few weeks have been quite tough. I don't usually eat cakes or biscuits, but the Belgian bun just jumped out at me.

So I've made a nice coffee and just eaten it.
Totally unnecessary.

But gosh it was delicious!

Cheese pie with Belgian bun for pudding sounds perfect to me ;) skip the spinach.

mogloveseggs · 13/05/2021 10:20

I bloody love a Belgian bun.
But I'm on a diet Sad
Glad you enjoyed it op I might have one as my treat next week.

@MindtheBelleek

I never knew those were called Belgian buns.

Incidentally, I recently reread The Nun's Story (which is about a Belgian nun) and hence keep misreading your title as 'I ate a Belgian nun.' Which is actually even more fun as a substitution for spinach. Grin

A nun bun would be a religieuses - stacked choux buns that supposedly look like a nun. (I watch Bake Off - they made them on there - I haven't eaten a nun bun!)

DD asked for a doughnut this morning. I may have to go to Greggs later to get her one. If they happen to have a Belgian bun and I happen to but it that's just one of those things :-)

Buy not but

Religieuses are delicious -- they're essentially like a more interestingly-shaped éclair.

81Byerley · 13/05/2021 10:29

I have a Belgian Bun delivered with the bread now, every Friday. Our local baker started delivering during the first lockdown. I may have continued ordering two when my husband was in hospital for a month.......

@MindtheBelleek have you seen the film? It's excellent!
Bloodybridget · 13/05/2021 10:37

@81byerley god yes - Peter Finch and Audrey Hepburn!

babbaloushka · 13/05/2021 10:41

@AmandaHoldensLips

Admit it... your Gwyneth Paltrow aren't you?
Came on to say this Grin
MindtheBelleek · 13/05/2021 10:41

@81Byerley, I don't much care for the film, though admittedly I haven't seen it in years. The novel which is based on the experiences of a real-life Belgian woman called Marie Louise Habets who spent 17 years in the Sisters of Charity is brilliant, though the parts set in the Congo are well-nigh unreadable for their gung-ho colonialism.

I think the problem is that about 95% of the 'action' of the novel is psychological, so making a film out of what was never going to work.

Maybe I should watch it again.

Dammit, I want a bun now. Grin

@ShinySquirrel

Oooh, lovely!

I ate an M&S custard-filler choux bun in bed last night. The pastry went everywhere but I felt so decadent (and itchy).

We need a trigger warning for those fuckers. I read about them on here on a 'M&S food is lovely' thread and I picked a couple up as I was going there anyway.

I even vowed on here that I would eat one and save one for DP. Sadly for him I failed miserably, ate them both and put the box straight in the outside bin so he wouldn't see it and I wouldn't have to admit my greed at not sharing.

Might now need to go and get some more and try again at being a good person and sharing the nice cakes.

snackmonster · 13/05/2021 10:42

Love any sort of bun!

The cinnamon swirls in the bakery section at Lidl are next level incredible.

Sainsbury's cinnamon knots are nice too.

Peter Finch is pretty hot, admittedly. In the novel, though, the reason Sister Luke ends up being his surgical assistant is because he has such garlicky bad breath, he makes all the other nursing nuns sick and faint. Which is not so hot.. Grin

2pumpsandasquirt · 13/05/2021 10:52

This could be me, I bought a 2 pack from sainsburys and demolished them both with tea after the school run. Blush

shumway · 13/05/2021 10:57

I tried the new Levantine spiced date and almond buns from Waitrose - they were so nice I ate both in the pack.

longtompot · 13/05/2021 10:58

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

A round fruited dough bun, thick white icing and a cherry on top. Yum.

I’ll need to buy one for research. Not very keen on icing, but that can be fixed.

You could get a Chelsea bun, they don't have icing on top.

I had a craving for a Belgium bun the other day. I'll have to buy one the next time I see one.

TheProvincialLady · 13/05/2021 14:56

I love Belgian buns. Belgians definitely eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

midsomermurderess · 13/05/2021 15:04

For what it's worth, what we call Danish Pastries they call wienerbrød (Vienna Bread).

Serpenta · 13/05/2021 15:09

On the nun themed confectionery there are also pets de nonne which means nuns' farts. I believe they're lovely and light, hence the name, a cross between a doughnut and a choux bun.

Jongleurterre · 13/05/2021 16:10

I don’t like sultana’s so it’s a no from me but I did read recently that there is going to be a Jaffa cake doughnut, now that does sound intriguing!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 13/05/2021 17:38

Ooooo!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 13/05/2021 17:40

Someone gave me a Yum Yum the other day. So outrageous. But delish!

TheVanguardSix · 13/05/2021 17:44

The Belgian Bun is undeservedly overlooked.
It is a beautiful bun.
I love a Welsh cake, me. Welsh cakes are gorgeous.
