Is this lasagne or cottage pie?

I was making cottage pie and made a big error - I put tinned tomato in. So the pot contains: mince, onions, carrots, swede, and tinned tomatoes. It's too late to take anything out. It's been simmering for an hour now.

Should I continue to make this into cottage pie? Or turn it into a lasagne? Or any other ideas? Help!

It can still be a cottage pie.
Use some type of gravy to thicken the sauce a bit.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/05/2021 19:00

It's fine as a cottage pie.

MuttsNutts · 11/05/2021 19:05

Cottage pie - I’d whack some Worcestershire sauce in though to balance out the tomatoeyness.

It's an unholy misbegotten monster that should be pitched straight in the bin Grin

tomatoes in cottage pie = nope

swede in lasagne = double nope

canyon2000 · 11/05/2021 19:07

Either sounds good to me!

Notavegan · 11/05/2021 19:07

Just add some bisto and Worcester sauce

TheDoctorDances · 11/05/2021 19:08

I always put tomatoes in mine, sounds like I’m in the minority.

CatCup · 11/05/2021 19:09

Cottage pie with tomatoes is lovely.

Windinmyhair · 11/05/2021 19:09

I put tomatoes and beef stock in mine...

SappysCurry · 11/05/2021 19:10

Add some carrots and peas and it will be cottage pie
With cheddar cheese on the mash of course....

SunshineCake · 11/05/2021 19:10

It is definitely more cottage pie than lasagne !

Mince and tomatoes always. Worcester sauce for fun.

Suzi888 · 11/05/2021 19:12

It’s a casserole Grin

Me too, I don’t think you are in a minority, always garlic too. Gives it a nice rich ‘gravy’
minty133 · 11/05/2021 19:12

The recipe for HelloFresh cottage pie has tinned tomatoes in it. It wasn't as nice as normal cottage pie but OK. It's definitely not lasagne if it's got swede in it!!

KFleming · 11/05/2021 19:15

I always put tomato in cottage pie. I think it’s nicer.

h4ppy · 11/05/2021 19:20

Cottage pie it is!

It does have garlic already, to the PP who suggested it, and I like to use mushroom sauce for depth (similar vibe to Worcester sauce, I'd say).

It's just when I tasted it earlier, it seemed a bit neither here nor there. But you're all right, it's no lasagne.

Thank you all Smile

And yes OBVIOUSLY cheesy mash to top it off! Mash isn't complete without cheddar.

Great way to get an extra one of your 5 a day in!

I’m not sure about cheesy mash though I’ve never tried that before. It may have to be a weekend experiment Grin

Damnloginpopup · 11/05/2021 19:30

Cottage pie without tomatoes? That's mental. My mum would be appalled.

My family always eat it with pickled onions and gherkins though, same with bolognese, which appals my partner so I guess it's down to personal taste

MaidEdithofAragon · 11/05/2021 19:31

Lasagne. Then you haven't got to make mash.

I agree with this.

It'll be fine I'm sure. The Hairy Bikers put tinned tomatoes in their beef mince stew and dumplings!!!

Mind you, going by the other recipes I've done from my new book, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as so far, they've been bloody delicious!

Love those lads… And the hairy bikers ceramic stock pot I got in Home Bargains for £10 has revolutionised my cooking (never had a stock pot before) 🎻

Yep, cottage pie.
