Does this look like chicken pox?

It developed 24hrs after DS was in a hot tub.
Nurse practitioner has said probably an allergic reaction (via photos and phone consult) but I'm not convinced

Are they itchy and is your child also poorly? If so, more likely to be chicken pox.

catinboots123 · 11/05/2021 09:39

Sore but not really itchy. And he's completely well. No temperature or anything.

Chicken pox would be like little blisters - hard to tell from your photo if they’re just red spots or blisters.

It looks (in my very unprofessional opinion) like chicken pox, both my sons have had it, were completely well, no real itching at the time plus Dh had it before we had children and a really severe dose of it too.

It does look like they are developing the tale tell blisters which should start to fill with fluid soon enough and confirm it.

Do you have any close up shots of just a cluster of spots?

Crappyfridays7 · 11/05/2021 10:01

Does look like it, I take it he’s not had them before?..they tend to start on the trunk.
Children aren’t always poorly with them. My 3 eldest were fine but just spotty not overly itchy you’d never have known they had them if it weren’t for the spots,
Youngest was covered and really poorly. Just depends on the child really. Hope your son is ok

FireworksAndSparklers · 11/05/2021 10:02

Give it a day. If any of them start to look like blisters, likely to be chicken pox.

catinboots123 · 11/05/2021 10:13

They look more like little pus spots rather than blisters I think. Will try and get a decent close up

Could you go and see a pharmacist? When I came out in spots and my then husband said that looks like chicken pox. I went to my local pharmacy and flashed my chest at the pharmacist and he confirmed it was chicken pox.

The practice nurse once told me that the hallmark of chicken pox is that you have one of each stage at the same time: so at least one red bump, one blister, one burst blister that’s beginning to scab over. Yours all look at the same stage, which given there are so many seems unlikely. I vote for something related to the hot tub.

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/05/2021 10:18

It does to me, yes. Do the spots weep if they're knocked? I can't quite remember the progression of it now, but if they blister it seems likely.

Also if they spread more - it tends to start on the trunk then spread outwards. I had a lot on my legs and in my hair.

catinboots123 · 11/05/2021 10:19

Should have said retired in previous post!

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/05/2021 10:20

Hmm. Having seen the close up I'm not so sure - they don't look full enough, the spots are quite watery. Have you tried an anti-histamine?

catinboots123 · 11/05/2021 10:25

Yes he's had liquid piriton morning and night.

He was in the hot tub Friday night and the spots appeared on Sunday morning

OP posts:
birdling · 11/05/2021 12:02

I don't think it looks like chicken pox. There's no blisters and they would be itchy rather than sore.

Barbitchurate · 11/05/2021 12:06

Flea bites?

Seeline · 11/05/2021 12:06

How old is he? With that many spots I would think he would be feeling pretty rough if it was CP, unless he is still very young.

dementedpixie · 11/05/2021 12:07

They look like spots with a head rather than blisters
Folliculitus?

Suzi888 · 11/05/2021 12:09

In my totally unqualified opinion not chicken pox. Can’t see any fluid filled blisters, only little pus bites?! Try not to let him itch, calamine lotion maybe?
Hope he feels better soon, looks soreSad

dementedpixie · 11/05/2021 12:09

Folliculitus can be caused by using a hot tub btw

anonymice · 11/05/2021 12:10

i know people who got scabies from their hot tub. Might it be that?

MrsMyrtle · 11/05/2021 12:12

I think the other possibility is hot tub folliculitis.

pleasetellmeitsfriday · 11/05/2021 12:16

OP, I have had this from a hot tub and have never been in one since!

It was years ago and I got some cream from the doctors.

Push for a doctors appointment.

It's not scabies.
