Just wondered what you all thought of episode 1 of his new series (Thurs R4)?

Love him! Missed this, so off to check it out now. Thanks for the alert, much appreciated.

QuentininQuarantino · 09/05/2021 12:11

Ooh didn’t know about it! Am relistening to cabin pressure with ds8 who loves it!

MargaretThatcherMilkSnatcher · 09/05/2021 12:38

I've just listened to it!! Brilliant Grin

AliceSprings123 · 09/05/2021 12:43

Listened, and subscribedGrin
Thanks again . And just think! While I was watching Francesco's Venice, and pics of the great Italian artists, I was missing this gem- thank the Lord for catch up.Star

Thanks for this, I hadn't realised Souvenir Programme was back. I loved an earlier episode (can't remember which series) where he had Pachelbel singing the words to his Canon in D which made me cry with laughter.

Ha! I’ve just listened to “Edinburgh.”

I love that episode. There's so much meaning in the conversation between Douglas and Arthur after the goose strike.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/05/2021 12:54

Every soiree, every salon, Pachelbel please play your Canon...

One of my favourites :)

GertiMJN · 09/05/2021 13:00

Oooh I missed the fact that souvenir programme is back - and just read that it's a but different this series. Downloaded to listen with dd later.
We are massive J F fans (as you might be able to tell Wink )
As for cabin pressure- it's sublime. St petersburg and Xinzhou are 2 of my favourites

rosebud5678 · 09/05/2021 13:11

The new series is certainly different, but at the same time unmistakably JF. I think it needs to be heard more than once.

I honestly think JF is the best radio comedy writer we have at the moment. My eldest daughter and I went to one of the recordings of Souvenir Programme in London, and it was a surreal 30 min which went far too quickly. So good to have some new material to look forward to every week! 🙂

I'm very jealous rosebud. Maybe we will get to do that in the future.
I agree that he is the best radio comedy writer. He's so clever! I gather he writes crosswords which doesn't surprise me.

rosebud5678 · 09/05/2021 13:24

Ah - didn't know about the crosswords but that absolutely makes sense.
We got our recording tickets via random draw and travelled all the way from Suffolk...there was no way I wasn't going!

I didn't 'get' it which is my own fault because I had it on last thing at night while I was falling asleep. Thanks for reminding me I need to try again!

MargaretThatcherMilkSnatcher · 09/05/2021 19:54

For other Cabin Pressure fans, I adore the Ottery St Mary episode, both for teaching me how to play Yellow Car and also because of Arthur's sublime attempts at trying to remember what Ottery St Mary is actually called ...

LucaLoo · 09/05/2021 20:05

My favourite episode too - St Mary being savaged by rabid otters and Arthur putting his thumb on the crux of a thorny theological problem. And how to fit 100 otters on Gerti, Herc's fear of sheep. It's just sublime!

QuentininQuarantino · 10/05/2021 10:58

I’ve listened 3 times now to series 9 ep 1 and it’s okay... no laughing out loud moments for me.. not sure i have got it!?

Favourite moments have been:

Fahrenheit arguing with Celsius
The whole of the bank heist episode
The “put it on a plate” song
Teach me to Dance
The wheels on the bus song!

TakeMeToYourLiar · 10/05/2021 11:09

I adore John Finnemore

Have all his radio 4 stuff on CD, have been to multiple live shows

But I didn't get this.

Except the segue into "since you ask me" that was clever

Need to listen again

I think the otters on Gerti is a different episode?

My apologies you are entirely correct
TakeMeToYourLiar · 17/05/2021 12:41

Listened to the second episode.

Starting to see where he is going with it, but the only Laugh out loud moments for me so far have been in uncle newts stories

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 21/05/2021 14:56

I just searched to see if anyone else was talking about this, having just listened to the first 3 episodes.

I rather love it. Yes it’s different to the previous series, it’s not a comedy sketch show suddenly, it’s a beautiful, elegiac, loving, novel about an extended family, played out in a series of non-chronological scenes and segues.

It fits somehow with the year we’ve had. I miss the laugh out loud moments from previous series, but I genuinely appreciate the thoughtful and kind tone of the writing, where everyone’s foibles and quirks are celebrated rather than mocked. I’ve no idea if it’s entirely fictional or partly autobiographical, but either way it’s my favourite thing on the radio at the moment.

devildeepbluesea · 21/05/2021 14:59

Ooooh I didn't know about this, thanks.

I've just introduced DD8 to Cabin Pressure, she loves it. We listened to Zurich last weekend, she shouted "YES!!" when it turned out that GERTI was partly made of gold!!

I love At Petersburg too, but Douz has to be my all time fave. John Sessions (RIP) was just hilarious in it.
