Just wondered what you all thought of episode 1 of his new series (Thurs R4)?

It's different, isn't it? I think I want to listen to the whole series before I decide whether it's better or worse!

This weeks made me cry twice

The passing down of the song through the family

And hearing how articulate he once was

I haven’t listened to it properly yet, just caught a bit of Friday’s while getting dinner ready, but I love John Finnemore. We met him after one of his shows a few years ago, took the kids (10 and 12) because they love Cabin Pressure and Souvenir Programme, and he was so lovely, posed for a picture and said he hadn’t thought at all that kids would like Cabin Pressure when he wrote it but so many seemed to.
We loved Arthur’s lockdown YouTube videos, they were a lovely thing when we couldn’t go anywhere.

Sorry, Thursdays!

I love John Finnemore and all his previous work, but just can't get into this new look Souvenir Programme sadly. I am hoping it's a one-off style for this unique time when there can't be an audience, and that he returns to the previous format next series.

I don't really understand why they didn't give this a different title as it is so different to the previous Souvenir Programmes and I feel a bit cheated tbh!

I think it is the sort of thing that improves with listening (much like Double Acts which I love!)
This weeks made me cry twice This is true. I find it a bit too emotional to be funny.

I’m really enjoying this although I find I have to really concentrate and listen a few times to get all the references: ‘half a glass!’
Feel I need to create a family tree to get all the relationship links. I think Vanessa is sublime - what a mind!

It's brilliant isn't it? Different to the other series but funny and heartwarming and laugh out loud in places. I do need to listen to it a few times though. Here's a timeline which may help 😁bleedingcool.com/tv/five-episodes-in-to-john-finnemores-souvenir-programme-series-9/

What did we think of final episode

Montalbanosono · 04/07/2021 11:50

Coming back to this thread to say that after listening to it properly - really listening, multitasking doesn't work - I absolutely love it. So clever but also emotionally it really packs a punch. Beautiful.

iamaLeafontheWind · 04/07/2021 12:00

I had to listen to the whole lot twice before it clicked - it’s like a crossword puzzle of a sketch show. But so worth it.

The line in the song - ‘and the Nightingale takes a bow’ is so early in the series, and yet means so much more once you’ve got to the end 😊
