SAS Who Dares Wins - sexist and Islamaphobic??

MeridasMum · 08/05/2021 09:45

This is not intended as a goody post. I’m genuinely interested to hear views of people from all (or no) faiths.

Sorry for the Daily Fail link but it was served to me via social media.

https://mol.im/a/9554369

Anyway, a Muslim contestant in the SAS Who Dares Wins show believes that she was held back due to insensitivity over her faith and gender.

She was not offered halal food so had to eat vegetarian meals, she feared hypothermia as she felt she had to keep on cold wet clothes rather than get changed in front of (male, I assume) competitors, she became constipated as she could not use the same bucket toilets as men and other examples.

I am genuinely in 2 minds about this:

I feel for her that, in our current climate we STILL have to call out that we have cultural, religious and gender differences and should not have to make do with a ‘one size fits all’ approach. This is only only a TV show and, as a contestant who will likely bring in many different types of viewers, she should be treated fairly. This is not a war situation after all.

Or

She knows what she was going into. The competition emulates real SAS training conditions and war-like situations. The TV company provides the minimum for survival - food, shelter etc. She should suck it up as it was her choice to enter.

What do you think?

Last time I looked it wasn't obligatory to go on SAS Who Dares Wins. It's pretty obvious from this woman's photos that she's a wannabe influencer on the make!

bonfireheart · 08/05/2021 09:50

I've not clicked on the link but as a Muslim woman from your description I'd say she's the one being unreasonable.

bonfireheart · 08/05/2021 09:52

Curiosity got the better of me and clicked the link and am LOL at her. Twat.

ahhhcomehere · 08/05/2021 09:54

She should suck it up- she knew what she was signing up for.
In a real survival situation which some of these tasks do emulate what would she do then?
Same goes for the woman who signed up for a programme 60 days in, in which she signed up to go under cover in prison and was shocked they didn't cater to all her needs and the water was disgusting.... 🤷‍♀️

wizzywig · 08/05/2021 09:54

Not practising as a Muslim anymore, but I think she's unreasonable. I'd assumed if she was, she'd be covered up more (not necessarily a hijab) for her promo shots?

inmyslippers · 08/05/2021 09:56

I just don't think it's for her

Mylittlepony374 · 08/05/2021 09:58

She's unreasonable. She knew what she was signing up for.

JellyBabiesFan · 08/05/2021 09:58

The point of the show is putting people through SAS training to see who can cope with it. Either she has never watched the show or simply wanted to play the victim card when they did not pander to her demands.

drpet49 · 08/05/2021 09:59

* It's pretty obvious from this woman's photos that she's a wannabe influencer on the make!*

I was thinking the same. Anyway she is completely unreasonable and entitled, she knew exactly what she was getting into.

Daydrambeliever · 08/05/2021 09:59

I'm pretty sure most actual survival situations do not adhere to any socially constructed notions of morality. She is very obviously being unreasonable.

PeanuttyButter · 08/05/2021 10:06

SIBU she knew what the show was, she wanted special treatment. That's not how it works

iklboo · 08/05/2021 18:24

SIBU and desperate for attention. It's SAS, not Big Brother. You don't sign up for a very specific format then expect them to change it to suit one individual.

amiahoarder · 08/05/2021 18:30

On the photo in her gym gear her abs look painted on ?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 18:36

I know someone whose boyfriend tried out for the SAS. He sounded like a complete masochist and really enjoyed it - but the whole things sounded like it was designed to take you way out of any comfort zone you could imagine and stretch you to the absolute limit.

So no halal food? I guess if you are actually a soldier, doing SAS ‘stuff’ you’d be lucky to get recognisable food. I remember my grandma telling us of when grandpa was in France during WW2 (he got stuck with a handful of his men when they got separated and hid in an derelict farm for a while) they managed to eat 🤢

It’s SAS not flipping ‘let’s go camping’.

Chatanooga1 · 08/05/2021 18:36

The SAS should not have to pander to anyone. The test is not for people that require special treatment, allowances and preferential treatment.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 08/05/2021 18:38

She was not offered halal food so had to eat vegetarian meals, she feared hypothermia as she felt she had to keep on cold wet clothes rather than get changed in front of (male, I assume) competitors

She knew what it was before making the application to be on the show.

Its also like that in real life (trust me...)

Shes the one being unreasonable.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 18:39

Don’t soldiers occasionally die on the trials? It’s not a stroll in the woods. Why go on the show if you don’t want to actually do the work?

It’s like me wanting to sit a level German but complain that I’m not really good at languages, I can’t really be bothered to study, and can I still pass, but be excused from the oral because it makes me feel nervous.

bonfireheart · 08/05/2021 18:47

It's perfectly halal to eat vegetarian food.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 18:51

Indeed - unless you are very observant and only want to eat food prepared in a kitchen where non halal has been prepared. I worked with someone like that (‘they may stir my food with the same spoon they’ve used for something else’).

FourteenthDoctor · 08/05/2021 18:57

I love this! Has she never watched the show?

I really have heard it all now

Mbear · 08/05/2021 19:26

@amiahoarder

On the photo in her gym gear her abs look painted on ?
I am so glad I’m not the only one that thought this GrinGrinGrin
Fulmar · 08/05/2021 19:47

Didn't watch it but, looking at the pictures of her arms and legs, I would say the reason she was eliminated is most likely that she is not fit and has only average strength. There is no muscle definition at all on her arms and legs.

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/05/2021 23:09

So, it’s ok to publish a picture of her in her knickers or similar to show off the bruises, and ok to publish a picture in a crop top/ sports bra but not ok for men to see her in those unless it’s in the daily fail?
And she was constipated as she couldn’t use the toilet... but didn’t even make it to the end of day one before she was eliminated. How often does she normally use the toilet?
SIBU.

mustlovegin · 08/05/2021 23:46

She's being unreasonable.

The show has been on for several seasons. She knew what she was getting into.

I really enjoy SAS Who Dares Wins and take my hat off to those guys

vimtosogood · 08/05/2021 23:50

I remember something similar from a previous series. After dropping into freezing cold water most of the women kept their underwear on before putting dry clothing over the top. They got a rollicking.
