Had loads of weird calls from mobile numbers similar to mine and I knew I’d be at risk but then I saw a message from dpd saying I’d missed a delivery (which I was waiting for) while I was on a zoom call then rushed through the website link. I put my credit card info in and hope to god I didn’t put in my bank info.

Then it linked my to dpd U.K. and I thought NO!! Omg!! I’m not in the U.K.!!

I stopped the card immediately and called my U.K. bank as it was my U.K. credit card but I’m now a bit worried about my bank account and my mobile number. That they’ll have “marked me”

Any advice, similar experiences l, rage against criminals n internet providers that don’t stop this or just plain old sympathy for my stupidity v v welcome!!

I had a guy lean over me at a cash point and say “Quick, get your card out - it’s broken, it just ate my card” he was pressing cancel and kept talking then he said “look, it says up there (above machine) out of order” then my card came out, he grabbed it and ran - he’d clearly been looking over my shoulder and seen my pin so I called my bank - it took 3 minutes to clear security with Santander by which time he’d got to another cash point and taken £300. I just stood there like a fool and let him do it! I think at one stage when he said it was out of order I might have even said thank you! Blush I felt such a fool but it was all so quick.

@Myrrfect

Yes much worse for my mum with a landline - she’s had them all!

Including several from the Microsoft help desk when she doesn’t have a computer - I think she rather enjoyed those!

My mum got conned by supposed Microsoft help desk when she clicked into a website on her PC. One of those dodgy 'Ad' ones. Message flashed on her screen that a virus had been found and to call the number to get through to Microsoft help desk. Lots of money later she calls me for her Microsoft password, they had complete control of her PC by then, lots of passwords and we needed to create a new email address as they'd taken control of that too. Password wouldn't work, back up contacts had been changed. Total scumbags

@Hm2020 your poor mum Flowers my mum gets a lot too it’s so hard as you do feel violated - when you’re elderly you deserve a bit of a break!

@Toomuchtrouble4me that’s scary like being mugged in broad daylight worse because he was there, near you pretending to help you 😖

Well they didn’t get their justeat order paid by me and tbh I’ve not lost any money (just pride)

It’s worse for people who are vulnerable, such as elderly people, the lady with the story about her autistic grandson made me so sad.

It’s frustrating thinking of the hurt and unhappiness that people cause, it’s cruel. Personally I know I’ll be alert to scams and more will hit me but it isn’t even my main bank account so I can shut it all down and it won’t affect me as everything runs automatically.

I just want to do something, I heard/read the same thing that isps could crack down on this but don’t. It’s a silent blight spreading unhappiness and worry 😞 hitting the vulnerable (and the distracted like me) I just wish I knew what I could do.

I have to say to the people who have replied with variations on “how could you be so stupid, I’d never fall for a scam like that” that I thought that, I’ve avoided plenty but it just took a day I wasn’t 100%.
Plus it’s not about the individual, I lost nothing and gained a story and the attentions of a lot of nasty scammy people it’s about the society, about the fact there could be more controls more sanctions more resources to stop it but there aren’t... so I’m alright but the next person, my mum your dad, her grandson may not be

Omg!! Rant over!! Oops! Save the world with Myrrfect!!

I had three missed calls today from mobile numbers very similar to mine except the last four digits. Then I read your post, so now I know to be on my guard for dodgy texts - thank you for sharing @Myrrfect !

Pigwig10 · 03/05/2021 22:36

I’ve had the same this week. DPD, missed parcel, click on link to arrange redelivery. I did so, filled in my name, email, address & phone number, clicked the next link to then be asked for credit card details. I then panicked and went back. Tried to click other links like the menu bars etc and none worked, only the one to collect personal details. I knew then that it was a scam!! Luckily I didn’t put in my card details but they do. Or have all my personal data Angry. I have sunscreen then had at least one text a day with a similar scam, missed delivery etc. Obviously I ignore them now. Fuming with myself though!

TildaKauskumholm · 03/05/2021 22:43

While I do feel for the elderly and vulnerable taken in by these scamming bastards, most of us should be aware of these scams as they are pretty widely reported in the press.

NoseOfJericho · 03/05/2021 23:29

I keep my phone no. to myself as much as possible. Have another one for general use. However my GP surgery has my original one.

Maybe a coincidence but I only started to get 'those' calls and messages just after I had the text to get vaccinated. NHS site was hacked a little while ago due to not updating it so maybe not a coincidence at all.

Torvean · 04/05/2021 02:42

Every week I get one from dpd/royal mail/ nhs covid booking.

I just click at the top to see the sender and when its not even a word I report them as phishing.

Greenmandm · 04/05/2021 07:31

The scammers use a system that can make appear any number they want on your phone screen but you won't be able to call that number back. I was called a few times by "HMRC" about tax fraud and that I will get arrested if I don't pay. This scam is going on a lot in the UK. If I'm not busy at that time I like wasting their time and make them think that I'm really paying and just piss them off at the end after more than half an hour on the phone. At least in that time they can't scam anyone else.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 04/05/2021 20:34

Just had another spam text. This time it was for to track a wayfair delivery. Must say this is a new one for me, as it’s generally another delivery company or a random bank....

Beebumble2 · 04/05/2021 21:16

I got a supposed Hermes scam today. I am waiting an order and was away from home. Thanks to posts like this I was on my guard, so as soon as I saw the request for money I knew it was a scam.
It gave a delivery time so I was able to check on my CCTv and of course there was no delivery at that time.

Cantstopeatingchocolate · 05/05/2021 08:37

Get the DPD app for your phone. I get notifications on the app when a delivery is due. And then you can track it in real time.
I also gave Hermes, you gave up put your delivery number in on this one but when you get the email from the company just copy and paste it. You can shop track it.

For those who are already expecting deliveries, this has been a godsend.
