Had loads of weird calls from mobile numbers similar to mine and I knew I’d be at risk but then I saw a message from dpd saying I’d missed a delivery (which I was waiting for) while I was on a zoom call then rushed through the website link. I put my credit card info in and hope to god I didn’t put in my bank info.

Then it linked my to dpd U.K. and I thought NO!! Omg!! I’m not in the U.K.!!

I stopped the card immediately and called my U.K. bank as it was my U.K. credit card but I’m now a bit worried about my bank account and my mobile number. That they’ll have “marked me”

Any advice, similar experiences l, rage against criminals n internet providers that don’t stop this or just plain old sympathy for my stupidity v v welcome!!

Thanks for the heads up Myrrfect, yet another thing to watch out for, I absolutely despise the people who do this. My dad, a man who pays all his bills on time meticulous with his tax, etc., started receiving those scam HMRC calls, he was so frightened by them it was awful. Fortunately we convinced him it was a scam and he was just to put the phone down, we then set up his phone to block the majority of these scam calls although some still got through. Fucking lowlifes.

@BronwenFrideswide

I understand now, OP, yes they are bastards. Hope you were quick enough to stop any serious damage but what a nightmare for you.

I too wonder where the information leakage regarding deliveries is coming from, it cant just be a random guess, they must have some form of inside knowledge.

I am intrigued by this calling you with a number very close to your own, is that to see if your number is active/does belong to you?

I’m not sure they need to get inside info. At the moment, with so many people shopping online for things, I reckon if they send out 100 texts, there’s a chance that at least 50% of those people will be waiting for something. Both DH and I have had the texts. I’ve had it three times, in various forms. Twice, I was waiting for something, but not the third time.

I'm afraid I won't pick up the phone at all if it's a number not recognised by my caller list. My reasoning is that if the call is important they will leave a message.
So far no messages have been left, and the caller has just ended the call. Pretty well proving that it was dodgy.

Serena1977 · 02/05/2021 14:49

I've had one today from Netflix saying this month's bill wasn't paid and to click on the link.

diddl · 02/05/2021 14:58

I'm not getting this.

Why would dpd be asking for your credit card number?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 02/05/2021 15:03

@bestbefore I've just forwarded a spam text to that number. This was apparently from JD sports....one look at my derriere would tell you I don't have a lot to do with sports.... however the reply back says it's for 02 customers, which I'm not, so not sure if they'll do anything.

korawick12345 · 02/05/2021 15:05

@diddl

This?

Also the ones some one screenshotted from morrisons, I don't understand the scam? Surely you have to click on the link and then do something?

thinkIamdone · 02/05/2021 15:06

Change any information you can related to this call, but yes, they now have details like your phone number, name etc. Scammers apparently 'mine' this type of info and you are likely to be scammed again. We got caught with the banking on where they knew all details, quoted balances, had the correct number of the bank and so on.

If you’ve still got a uk address you may be able to contact action fraud

This week alone I need to pay £1.99 to Royal Mail for a parcel, I've used my NI number fraudulently, I owe HMRC some tax money oh and my Amazon Prime account has been suspended and I need to verify my details to activate it. All calls and texts to my work phone which has no personal details whatsoever connected with it. It's getting beyond annoying now.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 02/05/2021 15:14

Forgot to add on my post, I’ve had loads of missed calls from mobile numbers recently. I rang the numbers back (with held my number) and most of them didn’t take incoming calls, but at least 2 of the numbers were answered. I’ve since blocked the numbers which didn’t expect incoming calls, and funnily enough I’ve not had any calls from random mobile numbers.

I’ve also received a few spam emails and text messages, and forward them on to the action fraud email address: [email protected] and for text messages to 7726 for my phone provider to investigate.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/05/2021 15:30

The problem was, I was expecting a deliveroo-type delivery any minute so was expecting a strange mobile to call and I very, very nearly picked up

Just like the O- just like me one time - just like so many of us.

We do s much online shopping these days that flinging a random delivery message out there gets loads of hits, I expect.

Don't beat yourself up OP - you caught it in time, but I'd change s many passwords etc as possible, and maybe ask for new cards, just in case.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 02/05/2021 15:31

This has just happened to a friend of mine. Unfortunately he was taken in by the second part of the scam where the 'fraud dept' call you Re the recent DPD scam text.
Except of course it the same bastards.
Heads up that the bank have refused to reimburse him. AngrySad

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/05/2021 15:31

OP, notO

(I and ashamed . . . Blush)

bestbefore · 02/05/2021 15:40

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants I think it's a general number for all phone providers to deal with scams.

TheMadRatter · 02/05/2021 15:40

I'm the same as you @Fernie6491

In fact, if I'm on the computer at the same time a number I don't recognise calls me on my phone, I immediately google it. If I'm not on the computer, I'll wait until the call ends and then google it on my phone straight after. It's never not been a scam number as per other people's reports in the Google results.

bestbefore · 02/05/2021 15:41

@korawick12345 yes to be scammed you need to click on the link but the thing is sometimes people (like the OP) do, without really thinking about it and then give away details without realising. As others have said they can sometimes catch you when you are expecting a delivery.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 02/05/2021 15:45

@bestbefore sorry, yes, this is what google says (checked after posting and before you replied) Not sure why it mentioned O2, when I'm with Tesco.

The bit I don't get though is why you would merrily type your bank details in to receive a delivery? That is not how couriers work IME so surely that would send up a red flag to you?

diddl · 02/05/2021 15:48

I'm guessing Op that the zoom call meant that you wouldn't have heard the delivery so there was a possibility that you had missed one?

I'm quite a phone dinosaur so wouldn't be giving them my number unless it was the landline!

You're lucky if you haven't had one of these spam messages, they all follow a pattern similar to this on. Makes sense if you're a bit distracted or don't think twive

bestbefore · 02/05/2021 15:53

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants I think Tesco use O2 as the carrier so that makes sense

thecatneuterer · 02/05/2021 15:55

@UhtredRagnarson

I’ve had the DPD scam several times and it’s always when I’ve actually ordered something. I’m starting to wonder how these scammers know I have ordered things? Have the companies I’ve ordered from been hacked or are selling my info?
They don't know you've ordered things. I get them all the time when I most definitely haven't ordered anything.
