As a teenager I like listening to a certain rock band.
Just found their album on iTunes, downloaded and listened.
I was shocked. One of the songs - sung by grown men - ' she's a 13 yr tease , with bleach blonde hair. Let me eat your cookies , let me see your cookies '
Sat in the bath gob smacked. When I was 15 , this never made me question.

Has anyone else come across something that as a younger person it never crossed your mind but now it's a wtf moment

Charlie's Angels... the original one from the 70s. Its is so sleazy. Watching it right now & DP & I are amazed at all the inuenndos, Charlie is a pervert. When I watched it when I was about 8 I LOVED it, my friends & I played it all the time at school & argued about which angel we could be.

@sar302

PE knickers. Big up and over ones that you wore with nothing but a gym T-shirt. In the winter. For cross country. Funnily enough the boys got to wear proper shorts 🤔

When we were in yr 9 they had a shake up of the pe staff and two younger female staff joined. They immediately added shorts to the girls PE uniform.

I was a bit "whatever" about it at the time. I was a "good girl" and just did and wore what I was told. But thinking now about how many women my age were put off exercise in their teens - well of course they bloody were. They were made to run around in a pair of knickers, at the start of puberty and periods, in front of hundreds of boys and male PE staff.

Why? Why on earth where those sodding knickers even considered an item of external clothing?

Yes. I recall gym knickers, utterly mortifying walking from the change rooms across the school to the gym, aged 11-12. It was a girls GS but we had a lot of male teachers. It must have been embarrassing for them, too.

@spiderlight

One of the adults at my parents' church, who was very involved with Sunday School, kids' plays etc., having an affair with a sixth former who went to the church, and eventually leaving his wife and kids and marrying her more or less as soon as she left school. Both stayed very involved with the church thereafter. This was the 80s and I was a few years younger than her and at the same school. At the time it was mildly scandalous but I look back now and think WTF?!
Yes our youth group leader ( church youth group) and his wife took in one of my friends who was having difficulties with her parents. Bloke ended up seducing her ( she was about 17 ), marriage broke up . No one ever thought it was ok of course but I don't remember there ever being any real repercussions for him from the church or anything ! This was a vulnerable girl who had already been sexually abused as a teenager by a neighbour.

I used to love East 17 when I was about 9 maybe 10. Listened to the song Deep the other day and OMG! I used to sing this in my room using an impulse spray as my mic 🎤

Also the song barbie girl by Aqua

I hate the fat shaming in Friends

Tetherreached · 01/05/2021 18:54

Also, didn't Elvis marry Priscilla when she was 14??

Miljea · 01/05/2021 18:55

'Every Step You Take'....

Yes, I came back to say Elvis, apparently he was obsessed with 14 year olds and virginity.

I’ve never mentioned this to anyone before but recently started thinking about it and realised that it might not have been what it seemed. When I was a teenager I was sexually active from around 14 and went to the GP to get the pill thinking that would be sensible. He advised that I went on the contraceptive injection so every 3 months I went to see him to get it and he would make me undress my top half so he could feel my breasts to check for lumps. I’ve never heard of anyone having to do this. Would be Interested to hear if anyone has any opinions on it?

Niconacotaco · 01/05/2021 18:56

At school, someone aged 15 had a old boyfriend. I wondered what he saw in her because what would they have in common to talk about??

There is a song by a girl and from the 90s which I heard recently - they seem to be singing about coercive control. The boyfriend doesn't like her clothes or how she dances etc. I thought it was B*witched but can't find it online. Anyway, at the time I paid no attention to they lyrics or if I did then I didn't understand them.

Quaagars · 01/05/2021 18:58

Loved that film as a kid but as an adult I realised how toxic and immature Robin Williams was. He completely ignored the court order and did what he wanted to without thinking properly of the effect it would have on his children

Have to agree with that one, still love the film though!
Think the mum's called Miranda? Never saw it as a kid but I'd have been massively pissed off too if I was her and came home from work and he'd thrown a party after being told no and to keep it secret Angry not to mention the actual carnage of donkey eating my begonias and people jumping all over the furniture lol

Also Dirty Dancing.
Completely understand where Baby's Dad was coming from now as an adult and parent myself!

Mid 1990s, walking along the street and seeing a huge billboard poster advertising the song "Smack my B up". It sickened me at the time and the thought still horrifies me now.

SilverLiningSearching · 01/05/2021 19:00

The movie Blame It On Rio:
‘Best friends Matthew and Victor decide to go on vacation in Rio de Janeiro with their daughters. However, their holiday descends into a comedy of errors when each man falls for the other's daughter.’

The daughters are teenagers. Saw it on BBC in the 80’s I don’t think it would be shown now.

Bessiebigpants · 01/05/2021 19:01

A girl In lower 6th moved in with the local pub landlord He was probably mid 30’s good looking but married His wife left she moved in! At the time we were all impressed but now as the mum of a 17 year old girl I’m horrified

This happened to a friend of mine at university, late 1980s, she was 19/20. It's horrible to hear that it has happened to other women too.

No that's not normal at all. He took advantage and sexually assaulted you passing it off as a routine check.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. That was not OK, not clinically necessary, and he was behaving totally inappropriately. Criminally in fact. You could still report this if you decide you would like to. Flowers
Thants1 · 01/05/2021 19:03

@Nonmaquillee
This was in the late 90s/2000s. Was your friend also getting contraception?

Queenofbeebers · 01/05/2021 19:04

Dh and I are just watching top gear and they are reviewing mobility scooters and James may just rocked up in a wheelchair.

Thants1 · 01/05/2021 19:05

@Constantcrayfish I actually feel sick thinking about it now, I think this is the first time I’ve really accepted that this might have been sexual assault. He is still practicing as a GP

goldielockdown2 · 01/05/2021 19:05

Thants1 sorry that happened to you, it happens as part of a 'full health check' when you go to the gyno in my home country, think it still happens in the US too but probably not every time! I wouldn't like it, either. I don't see why it's necessary.

Quaagars · 01/05/2021 19:06

Agree re Bill Whyman and Mandy Smith, in fact the whole 'wild child' thing of the 80s.

I've always thought the Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith was sick and disturbing, even as a kid/young teenager myself and she's not that much older than me.

CheesyWeez · 01/05/2021 19:06

Smoking. At work! In restaurants! On the UNDERGROUND! I mean what?

My boss asking me to come up and update the whiteboard with the progress of the various projects we were doing because he "enjoyed the view"

Disgusting boss (a different one) saw me crying when I had heard at work about my gran's death, he offered me a lift home, and expected to sleep with me in return for his kindness. I was 19 I guess he was about 45. Shudder. Luckily my neighbour called at the door because she heard me crying. I did know this was awful at the time but my older female colleagues thought it was funny. He was "such a card" , apparently. Early 80s.

I would be utterly unsurprised if you weren’t one of many. Often press coverage of a single accusation results in many others coming forward as women realise that they were assaulted years after the event.

All night long by Rainbow was on the radio the other day...

You're sorta young but you're overage
I don't care cos I like your style
Don't know about your brain but you look alright
