As a teenager I like listening to a certain rock band.
Just found their album on iTunes, downloaded and listened.
I was shocked. One of the songs - sung by grown men - ' she's a 13 yr tease , with bleach blonde hair. Let me eat your cookies , let me see your cookies '
Sat in the bath gob smacked. When I was 15 , this never made me question.

Has anyone else come across something that as a younger person it never crossed your mind but now it's a wtf moment

@MintyMabel yes! Synchronised swimming is equally guilty. I always find it really creepy that the girls are expected to wear a full face of makeup and maintain a creepy fixed smile while fulfilling their role as professional competitive athletes.

Angelil · 03/05/2021 07:51

@SoMuchForSummerLove @BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand exactly

Boomshakkalakka · 03/05/2021 07:59

Lots of songs are not now seen as appropriate - go right back to folk songs about rape through things like the Who's wicked uncle ernie, pinball wizard (disability) aqualung, tonights the night, but now its ok to sing about things that make' normal' seem uncool.

Middersweekly · 03/05/2021 08:02

Any songs by R Kelly spring to mind.
Also one of our friends started up a ‘secret’ relationship with her dads best friend. He had to be late 30’s early 40’s at the time and she was 14/15/16 (it went on for quite some time and was sexual). It didn’t sit right with us even then but now I am horrified when I think of it.
Another friend in a different school pursued and had sex with her PE teacher. She was around 15/16 at the time. Again that didn’t sit right at the time but now I’m horrified by it!

I haven’t had a chance to read through the whole thread so apologies if it’s been mentioned already but has anyone watched The Morning Show? I have only recently started watching it and it’s actually quite insightful. It was jarring seeing Carrell act in a certain way but I am surprised how much things that now seem so passé and yet the Me Too movement didn’t happen so long ago Sad

I actually remember reading about David Bowie’s underaged groupies. It was before my time but I always felt uncomfortable reading about those with large age gaps where one is actually underaged or underaged groupies being such a given or their handlers actually procuring them for those gross celebs 🤮 It now seems so wrong but I always felt it was wrong then but not many seemed to speak out against it because how socially acceptable some things were. Even recently I was watching a few interviews with the Olsen twins, having discovered them when watching Elizabeth Olsen in Wandavision, and it struck me on how young they were when they became famous. And apparently Britney Spears was underaged when she made a few of her songs Shock I only found out from that Free Britney documentary recently.

The implication, for me, is that, if Daddy's poor, then you can just rape the woman if you feel like it because he can't afford to take you through the courts over it.

I had interpreted it as meaning: if she's from a rich family, make a bit more effort, because you might have a chance of marrying her and becoming rich, or at least she might end up as your girlfriend wining and dining you and giving you nice presents. If she's poor, just enjoy yourselves, and no need to make a big effort. Materialistic but not rapey. But I can now see how it could be interpreted the other way - argh!

SeaTurtles92 · 03/05/2021 08:22

When I was younger I listened to a rock band and then the lead singer got put in prison for being a pedophile. Never listened to a song ever again.

Pineappleheart · 03/05/2021 08:22

@Billandben444

Went to a convent school in the 50s. We donated 6d every week towards buying a black baby that supposedly lived in their mission somewhere in Africa and when our card was full (5 shillings I think), we were given a picture of our baby and got to name him/her. I think the money really went on gin. What a truly dreadful enterprise and we never questioned it 😱
Missionary Children is the Catholic Church’s official missionary charity Under its original name of Holy Childhood, Missionary Children has been active in Catholic schools for 170 years. The contributions of children in Scotland enables us to carry out education, medical and welfare projects in the poorest areas of the world. it was the holy childhood and you were only naming the picture of the child, there were only 10 pictures in total. It was actually a great charity - still operates today (as below) ‘Under its banner ‘children helping children,’ monies raised through schools are directed towards self-help programmes involving the building of schools, the provision of health and nutrition programmes and medications, school fees, and teaching and learning resources. Children in communities, orphanages, homes for the disabled, refugees, and those living on the streets are assisted by the generosity of children’

Sorry I haven't read everything but has anybody said the storylines in Friends yet ? Especially controlling Ross and idiot Joey
I actually find being fake stupid really uncomfortable like the people in towie. Why would you make yourself look stupid ???

SunsetBeetch · 03/05/2021 08:43

@ThanksForAllTheFish

One that hasn’t been mentioned already - Nickelodeon.

All the aimed at tweens and young teens shows like iCarly, victorious, sam&cat, etc are problematic. There is a whole foot fetish thing going on (they even change the Nickelodeon logo to a foot). At one point they asked kids (as in fans) to post photos of their feet on Twitter to win a prize- lots of them did.

Just google Nickelodeon foot fetish / Dan Schneider (the director of all these shoes and the foot guy).

Oh yes there is a Youtuber called Slo4n who has done some videos on him. So, so creepy. You can see how uncomfortable some of the young actresses were with him.
Peanutbutterandbananatoastie · 03/05/2021 08:44

Yes I agree with this brolly I can’t watch gogglebox anymore as it’s full of ‘thick’ people with regional accents, and the occasional input from a more intelligent posh person Hmm

Peanutbutterandbananatoastie · 03/05/2021 08:45

Yes the Ariana grande potato bit is really creepy.

SunsetBeetch · 03/05/2021 08:53

@Gwenhwyfar

"The implication, for me, is that, if Daddy's poor, then you can just rape the woman if you feel like it because he can't afford to take you through the courts over it."

But IS that what it means?

I always took it to just mean you don't have to make much of an effort. Which is still shitty and misogynistic.
ufucoffee · 03/05/2021 08:58

@derxa me too. Programmes from then don't make me feel uncomfortable because I was there at that time. Things were different and I can see that. Also lots of us at school had much older boyfriends. Different times.

Furball · 03/05/2021 09:05

@JaniieJones

Communal showers after PE in the 80s with battleaxe teachers standing watching!! allegedly to ensure people showered. I hope there are lots of retired PE teachers ashamed of this gross invasion of privacy.
We had this too and also had to see the teacher at the start of the 'shower run' who would tick your name off to ensure you had one and if you had 2 x P's in a row you were told to go and see your dr.

If you were lucky you had a friend who would whip your towel from you on the way in and stand and hand it to you at the exit on the way out. and we literally just ran through barely getting wet. All completely pointless and embarrassing.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 03/05/2021 09:10

I was at a gig once when someone from the entourage invited us to the after party. I was 14 and my mum was waiting outside!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 03/05/2021 09:23

Sister by Prince.
About 'him' being 16 and having sex with 'his' 32 year old sister

Interviews about this are vague . It's off his album dirty mind

I agree that some of our memories are from decades ago. But that doesn't make it right.

I found the love/hate rock queen lyric meanings . 2 comments . One calling the singer out for being a pedophile , the other for mixing up the lyrics 🙄

To the poster who made light of the lyrics , please come back and explain what 13 means , buxom blonde , virgin. And how that is portrayed as innocent when the song is obviously about him wanting and having sex with an underage child .

What now makes you uncomfortable that didn't at the time

I haven't seen anyone mention it, but James Bond. I always hated bond films as a kid because the women seemed kind of pathetic. Even the baddies. They could be beating him up but he would manage to pin them down and start kissing them, and after some initial resistance they would be fully on board. I always thought Bond was a prick and the women were lame for not seeing it.
That said, I do feel Daniel Craig's Bond isn't as bad as the old ones. Sean Connery is the worst!

Happytobejabbed · 03/05/2021 09:37

Black and White Minstrel Show, Bless this House.

As an adolescent I was slightly uneasy with them but my over powering thought was that they were crap and something better must be on one of the other 2 channels.

But now I’m appalled that the people involved in their making and broadcasting thought that they were suitable.

HappySwordMaker · 03/05/2021 09:38

Being lectured at Christian camp on the sin of masturbation, about 50 of us kids in the camp hall. I was 10/11 years old, sheltered, and had no idea what masturbation was. Many years later, I still have photos of my time at that camp and the man lecturing us and I have named him on the back of the photo as “Camp Dad”Confused.

lorca · 03/05/2021 09:42

Agree re Bill Whyman and Mandy Smith, in fact the whole 'wild child' thing of the 80s. - she was a 'wild child' and therefore a figure of derision. HE ofc was a great man, rich, chased by millions of people/women all over the world and therefore he's alright! I think he said after their divorce 'I paid £100,000 for each time I had sex with her' - he paid (IIRC) about £600,000. He was quite petulant about it. Angry

And Fawlty Towers - this was on recently (from 1975) and we watched about 10 minutes, in which Manuel was called 'idiot' 'stupid' and a 'Dago'! And NOT from Basil either, from some workmen in the hotel. We couldn't watch it - it's supposed to be funny, not cringy or creepy. Or downright disgustingly racist.

The showers at my school in the 70s were little jets of cold water from each side, that we had to walk through holding our towels above our heads. I don't remember any teachers watching, just the whole class having a telling off for having so many periods! At least 2 a month Grin to get out of showers.

In those days people (male) were just people you had to keep in your toes about. Teachers, work mates, people in the street/pubs/parks/anywhere could comment on your body, touch it (or try to) and it was supposed to be a compliment!

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/05/2021 09:47

I used to love the film Big but I can't watch it now. It just doesn't feel right.

In junior school we used to buy pictures of black babies and children each year as a fundraiser for some charity. I used to look forward to it!

RevolvingPivot · 03/05/2021 09:56

@Thewiseoneincognito

Drinking fizzy drinks as kids. Makes me shudder now.

Of all the awful things on this thread and you mention fizzy drinks. How strange.

RevolvingPivot · 03/05/2021 09:59

My dd9 has recently been watching "sister sister" I used to watch it on Nickelodeon when I was her age.

Every single episode is either Ray Lisa or the twins trying to chat someone up / find a date.

The last episode Tia and Tamara liked the look of a boy the saw on the bus and didn't notice him get off so they caught 4/5 different buses looking for him.

Most teen series were probably like this but I was absolutely shocked. Why can't they just go out abs have fun with their friends?

SirVixofVixHall · 03/05/2021 10:03

Why was Bill Wyman not prosecuted for that ? The revolting comment “she was a woman at 13”
No she wasn’t Bill, she was a child. I have a DD this age, she has just turned 14. She is still sleeping with teddies, has a lot of growing to do, she is in no way “a woman” . My 16 year old isn’t “a woman” either.
I remember their wedding, she was 18 and he was in his fifties. Mandy all frills, huge eyes and masses of rollered blonde hair, next to this ageing man who looked like her Dad.
She reminded me of a doll I’d had when I was little, Mary Quant Daisy. She looked so fragile, the whole thing really horrible to witness.
