As a teenager I like listening to a certain rock band.
Just found their album on iTunes, downloaded and listened.
I was shocked. One of the songs - sung by grown men - ' she's a 13 yr tease , with bleach blonde hair. Let me eat your cookies , let me see your cookies '
Sat in the bath gob smacked. When I was 15 , this never made me question.

Has anyone else come across something that as a younger person it never crossed your mind but now it's a wtf moment

It's still current, but I have to say all the crotch-flashing moves in Strictly make me flinch. Why do we all need to see their knickers for so long, so often???

KnightsInWhiteSateen · 01/05/2021 14:59

@OneStepOneStumble Interesting you should say Busted. I listened to 'Who's David?' recently and was struck by the spitting venom. It's really jarring!

Such gems as, "You've always been this way since high school, flirtatious and quite loud. I find your sense of humour spiteful, it shouldn't make you proud" and "you stupid, lying bitch, who's David?" I mean, Jesus, abuse set to music from a fluffy boy band!

Lessthanaballpark · 01/05/2021 15:03

Also Cruel Intentions...it's an adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons...the whole point is the seduction of young girls and how these awful people try and ruin their lives and reputations. The message is not that this is ok...but watch out for the perverts out there!

I would agree if it weren’t for the vilification and dethroning of Buffy at the end compared to the canonisation of Ryan Phillipe’s character.

transformandriseup · 01/05/2021 15:08

I used to love watching On The Buses because my dad liked it.

But now Shock

In fairness I thought the acting was cringey and awful so I didn't make it to the end 😂 Unlike the Glenn Close/ John Malkovich version of DL which is awesome.

When I was Year 9 (so around 13/14) I had a friend at school who had a boyfriend who was around 25. He used to pick her up from school and they were definitely having sex- she told me.
We we all jealous. Now, as a fully grown adult, I am pretty horrified none of the teachers seemed to care.

SpringtimeSummertime · 01/05/2021 15:13

Bit like Rita , sue and Bob too

God, I watched this recently! I thought it was really funny at the time!
The film 16 candles is f’ing awful too - Rape is presented as the girl’s fault.

goldielockdown2 · 01/05/2021 15:14

I was 14 when Cruel Intentions came out, but I didn't think the characters were meant to be my age? They are older aren't they. Still gross though, but that's the point as it's adapted from the book DL.

SpringtimeSummertime · 01/05/2021 15:15

Not to mention that awful film where John Cleese plays a headteacher who runs around with a 6th former... What’s it called.

AMillionMilesAway · 01/05/2021 15:15
@tipseyTorvey my 6yo is crazy about gymnastics and this makes me feel really uncomfortable too. She always wears shorts when she is training but for competition they are only allowed leotard. They say that it’s because they need to see the lines etc but it a ok to wear a long sleeved Leo so that doesn’t seem to ring true for me. All I can say is that until my dd grows out of her gymnastics phase I will be keeping a very close eye on her.
Needing to see the lines is bullshit. The male elite gymnasts perform in shorts of legging-style trousers and body lines are just as important for men.

But as a teenager watching that film I just thought it was about a bad boy who met a good girl and she changed him for the better when he fell in love with her; so I stand by my original idea that at the time it didn’t make me uncomfortable but as an adult, who understands it, it totally does.

They are all in high school and Selma Blair’s character is supposed to be about 14 - she’s the youngest of them all.

alliejay81 · 01/05/2021 15:18

Slightly different but I'm always shocked "smack my b£&ch up" still gets played. No-one ever bats an eyelid at it and I've never understood why.

babbaloushka · 01/05/2021 15:21

@TooManyAnimals94

Some of these have not aged well but a few I think you're missing the point. If you listen to Does your Mother Know You're Out, he is discouraging the girl from trying to act older than she is. I've always heard it as being very self aware about girls who think they are more grown up than they are. Also Cruel Intentions...it's an adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons...the whole point is the seduction of young girls and how these awful people try and ruin their lives and reputations. Yeah true, but the whole thing is him sort of caught between wanting her and knowing she's too young, just doesn't sit right for me, but again, different times.

I always think it is really creepy that buddy the Elf marries Zooey Deschanel.

babbaloushka · 01/05/2021 15:26

Even the differences in marking of Olympic Gymnastics floor routines is vastly different, they are expected to smile and pose and look entertaining. The way Simone Biles propels herself to 3 times her own heigh and then has to smile is a glaring disparity between how the males are expected to compete, on pure skill and ability.

goldielockdown2 · 01/05/2021 15:26

I thought they were at least 16 in the US school system's terms. Also Ryan Philippe's character wasn't exactly vindicated- he was killed off. And Katherine also got her comeuppance. I got that it was meant to be disgusting behaviour.

Not in the UK, but when I was at high school the biggest song of the time was called Moi Lolita. It was everywhere, parties, school performances, prime time TV, music channels, massive massive deal. You can imagine how wrong the lyrics were and how old the girl was who sang it.

Cowbells · 01/05/2021 15:27

@Nishky

I think a lot of sings from the past were pretty dubious

Happy Birthday sweet sixteen
Centrefold
Does your mother know that you’re out

Although none that I can think off reach the depths of that revolting blurred lines

I think that Does Your Mother Know is one of the few songs where the man appears to be good. It's about a teenage girl flirting with an older man (which we did, they do, teenage girls fancy older men sometimes, it happens.) But he says she's only a child and asks if her mother knows she's out, which suggests he doesn't see her as easy prey but a human being who is vulnerable.
babbaloushka · 01/05/2021 15:29

I'm on fire by Bruce Springsteen is a great song but that always makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, fraught with imagery alluding to getting with a young girl.

Cocolapew · 01/05/2021 15:31

My Sharona and Brown Sugar's lyrics. I listened to Brown Sugar for years before I realised what they lyrics were.

This!!!! I never get why people justify girl gymnasts hip wiggling as 'artistry' when the men's sport is also called artistic gymnastics and they don't have to pose and smile like that?!!
midsomermurderess · 01/05/2021 15:37

Yes, Brown Sugar is really very nasty.

SpringtimeSummertime · 01/05/2021 15:40

‘Creep’ by Radiohead gives me the creeps nowadays funnily enough...

TheVolturi · 01/05/2021 15:49

Bruce Springsteen I'm on Fire. I can't see how that can be anything other than sick? And I used to love him and have seen him in concert!
