I think protein yoghurt has just changed my life

OMG it literally has. I just bought the most delicious tasting fat free Icelandic protein yoghurt schizzle from M&S and it's frickin amazing and I'm totally full up after a quarter of a pot! It's bloody delicious! And best of all I've just discovered they stock the same thing in Tesco much cheaper! Am going to eat lots of it instead of biscuits and shit and get all Kate Moss like and skinny!

Had to come on and tell all of your lovely ladies as my husband just gave me a blank stare when I declared it was going to change my life and went back to writing his dull IT paper for work.

Tell me what foods have changed your life??

I’m married to a food scientist, I have name changed for this because he has been on the tv a lot on science and food programmes, is oft quoted in newspapers and does research for various companies.

He said all yogurt is protein and it’s really all a bit of marketing pulling your leg. A bit of a difference between yoghurts but negligible. But adds to the price.

Divebar2021 · 29/04/2021 10:13

@Fluffycloudland77

I have the Lakeland yoghurt maker but haven’t used it for a while. I bought the “ starters” ( cultures) online somewhere. If you want it thick like Greek yoghurt you’ll need to strain it. ( I used muslin ) I’ve not tried non dairy so that would be interesting.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 29/04/2021 10:23

OK that's interesting @Foodisascience. I did know that all yoghurt was protein but some have more than others. All I care about is it being yummy, low calorie and that it fills me up!

Skyr is not yoghurt, though - it is technically cheese.

As far as I am aware, it is not possible to buy actual skyr outside Iceland (maybe there was one Icelandic immigrant in the US who had imported the real cultures). This is 'Icelandic style yoghurt' which is not skyr at all. I remember MS was trying to get the word 'skyr' protected like other products which are only made in a specific region, but I suppose they haven't managed it yet.

I soak Scotch Porridge Oats in strawberry kefir by biotiful overnight and add fresh blueberries and raspberries.
Delicious and fills me up much better than porridge with milk.
It’s definitely improved my breakfast routine so much.

@enjoyingscience

Didn’t change my life, but I’d recently discovered coconut yoghurt, and it’s fucking lovely.
Pray tell me where does one find coconut yoghurt? Is it smooth???
Fluffycloudland77 · 29/04/2021 19:57

Most supermarkets sell coconut yoghurt but I’ve not tried it.

My yoghurt makers arrived so the first batch goes on tomorrow morning.

enjoyingscience · 29/04/2021 22:08

It is smooth and excellent. Really nice and thick, coco nutty without tasting like conditioner. I’m a big fan. The coconut collaborative one is good.

Funny you say about the weight loss. I've been doing low carb high fat and bought it for that 10 days ago. Had 100g every morning with nuts for breakfast. I've lost 12lb since then and feel great. [/quote]
Missed the 10 days ago part and read 'I had 100g this morning for breakfast and have lost 12lb since then' 😂

Since reading this thread I looked up yoghurt and have been shocked by the difference in fat levels. Some of the ones I thought were healthy are extremely fattening argh

Divebar2021 · 30/04/2021 18:01

Having fat in them does not make them fattening

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/04/2021 18:13

My yoghurt maker has 3 hrs to go then I’m straining it to make Greek yoghurt 😋 I have a lemon in the Waitrose order for cheese. If I can do cheese I can have cheese cake.

ForwardRanger · 30/04/2021 23:35

Well that depends how much fat we're talking. Some of them contain 50percent of recommended daily intake per day in one serving. That is fattening in anyone's book. And I was surprised by which brands, changing immediately (well when i finish my yummy fattening brand ☺)
ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2021 23:59

I used to strain homemade yogurt but now just make it with a lot of added skimmed milk powder which gives a much better yield of thick yogurt. (And no messy muslin.) I assume it's pretty high protein, and tastes good.

CiderJolly · 01/05/2021 06:32

Agree with @Divebar2021 consuming fat doesn’t make you fat.

Sugar/too many carbs make you fat.

Yoghurt which has zero fat but a combination of sugar and artificial sweeteners really isn’t gonna be particularly healthy.

By all means enjoy it as a treat but know what you’re eating!

Dee1975 · 01/05/2021 11:04

Thanks op. Just ordered some for my shop this weekend!

Sugar turns into fat which is... fattening. How do people not know this?
enjoyingscience · 01/05/2021 20:46

Yep - never ever go for zero fat/low fat versions of anything. I’d rather have a sensible amount of an unadulterated food...

PuffinShop · 01/05/2021 21:03

Real skyr is naturally low fat and highish protein, though.

I think protein yoghurt has just changed my life
MassageBliss21 · 06/05/2021 03:13

Yeo valley do a super thick kerned one, that has 10g of protein per 100g which is on a par with Skyr and has live good bacteria.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 06/05/2021 11:47

So I've discovered that the cheaper Tesco version is not as good as the M&S one. Not surprising really. But it's still good.

When I'm out and about I take those Graham's Skyr individual portions that look like they should be baby food. I buy them in Aldi. The lemon flavour Skyr is my absolute favourite.
