3 bed detached for less than £450K? Where?

ILoveMyMonkey · 27/04/2021 20:57

If you can buy a 3 bed detached house in a countryside area (not on an estate) for £450K or less near good or outstanding secondary schools, where do you live? and would you recommend your location?

Seriously though.

If all of your family are in Hertfordshire, then surely you need to think about travelling to visit. For me, that would rule out Scotland, Northumberland etc, as I would want to be closer.

So I would draw a circle on the map at the distance you are prepared to travel eg 2 hours/4 hours and start from there. You might also consider if you need to go around London to do that. eg 2 hours north from you is a lot easier to travel than 2 hours south.

@Redtartanshoes

Most of Scotland
I was about to type exactly this.

North Cambs, into the fens if you want rural, or in one of the small towns. The primaries are variable but the senior schools are rated Good. Chatteris, March, Warboys, Ramsey. You'll get something great for your budget.

Loads in my area. I live in north east Wales. Great connections to the countryside yet I can be in chester in 15 mins. Buses go to decent grammars on the Wirral and move a bit further west and there's a stunning boarding school near Ruthin. Other privates in the area too.

minniemomo · 28/04/2021 08:54

Most places!!! You can buy a 4 bed semi or 3 bed detached here close to the (stony) beach. Good schools both state and private on bus route

Cowbells · 28/04/2021 08:55

Look in Northumberland. Stunning countryside. Best beaches in UK. Nice market towns including Alnwick with Hogwarts Alnwick castle. Newcastle nearby for incredible range of culture - theatres, galleries, concerts, great shopping and restaurants.

There's a gorgeous 4 bed barn conversion and a 6 bed modern mansion both on at 450k.

@MrsAmaretto

And more ... we could buy acreage up there, so beautiful in summer but I don't fancy winter there

Capricornandproud · 28/04/2021 08:57

But if you need to commute- market Harborough perhaps? Trains are expensive. If you are work from home north or west is the option

starbrightstarlight8888 · 28/04/2021 08:59

I live in one. East Anglia.

Cowbells · 28/04/2021 09:00

6 bed mansion in Northumberland, near shops but also on the edge of two nature reserves and very close (5 mins drive) to the most beautiful sandy beaches. Here

Cowbells · 28/04/2021 09:01

Four bed barn conversion

SlothMama · 28/04/2021 09:08

The majority of the North?

Bluesheep8 · 28/04/2021 09:11

There was a similar thread a few weeks ago where the OP wanted 4 beds and didn't care about schools for same budget. Went on for pages and pages.

As will this. Someone answered "most places in the UK" upthread.

RichTeaCheddars · 28/04/2021 09:21

Yep most places. Except London or M25. I'm only just inside the M25 and prices are 480k on the cheaper end for a small 3 bed terrace on an estate. Actually quite a lot of countryside and good schools though but expensive houses.

Somuddled · 28/04/2021 09:22

Many places in Yorkshire. If you want to be near a city try places just outside of Leeds. 5 beds can be found for £320k and up.

jessnoah · 28/04/2021 09:26

You can get a 4/5 bedroom house for 400k in mid Suffolk

chocolatesweets · 28/04/2021 09:32

Our detached 3 bedroom house was £140k . Schools aren't bad. Rural area. Gorgeous scenery and beaches. I don't know what else people want. 😂

ferneytorro · 28/04/2021 10:10

Clitheroe Lancashire. Grammar school in the town.

Checkingout811 · 28/04/2021 11:12

@chocolatesweets where is this?

ILoveMyMonkey · 28/04/2021 12:43

This is so great, thank you so much for all the messages. As someone said upthread “It really does seem like the south east is its own country” you’re not wrong there ha ha 🤣

To answer a couple of other questions (sorry I can’t remember who asked) ...
the folks are moving with us so Will got o whichever area we go to.

No commute so trains etc aren’t an issue at all.

Totally agree about the outstanding schools - good works too.

Thanks again you lovely lot.

That’s a beautiful house but I would not recommend Ashington (for schools or in general tbh)
Bluedeblue · 28/04/2021 13:21

You'd get a 5 bed detached with a big garden and sea view for that here. I'm in a modern seaside town, 30 mins from Edinburgh.
