3 bed detached for less than £450K? Where?

If you can buy a 3 bed detached house in a countryside area (not on an estate) for £450K or less near good or outstanding secondary schools, where do you live? and would you recommend your location?

Are your DC Grammar School contenders? If so absolutely north Lancashire.

DancesWithDaffodils · 27/04/2021 21:54

Just for comparison. We do live in suburbia, but DS and I walked from the front door through a nature reserve, saw deer, and then came back through the woods bursting with bluebells and wild garlic tonight.
Our 4 bed detached is worth 220. We are in catchment for 2 outstanding secondaries.
Teesside.

Congleton, 3 bed detached house here from 250k.

Scotland. Would highly recommend. My house cost £150K (not detached though). It's small...83 square metres, but with open country views, good primary school and 20 minutes drive to 2 cities. For £450K you can get practically a mansion Grin Except in and around Edinburgh.

@ILoveMyMonkey

Loving the Northumberland suggestions, we are off on holiday there in the summer so will definitely look at it from a moving point of view 👍.
Be careful with schools. A lot of the rural Northumberland schools are really underperforming. Morpeth's KEVI is very good but also very in demand so you wouldn't be able to bank on getting a place if you aren't close.
Emma2021 · 27/04/2021 22:38

Type in 'land of the living dead' in google and the towns and cities named in it you'll get a castle for that money.

Onedropbeat · 27/04/2021 22:40

@ILoveMyMonkey
I am in same dilemma

In Hertfordshire with a 2 bed terrace for £400k, it’s shocking how little the money gets

I can’t find any decent 3 beds for £450k even going outside the Hertfordshire borders

JessicaDamnDay · 28/04/2021 00:20

Swap Hertfordshire for Herefordshire, it's far more affordable and absolutely beautiful.

TedMullins · 28/04/2021 00:23

I don’t live there now but where I grew up, Leicestershire. Or Northamptonshire. You’d get a 4 bed for that price in some areas.

Farrowandballachee · 28/04/2021 00:36

Peak District

ILoveMyMonkey · 28/04/2021 06:32

I knew this was the right place to ask this question. Thank you all so much.

@DancesWithDaffodils
3000 sq ft of space here for less than that Shockomg what I wouldn’t give for that kind of room 😂. Your suburbia sounds amazing compared to the car park I live in ha ha 🤣

@Onedropbeat, it’s rubbish isn’t it. I’m only hear by default as this is where I was born and family are so have kind of just stuck around. But the prices are just ridiculous - to get a semi in an overbuilt area we’d need upwards of £700K - its all completely out of our reach.

@SirSamuelVimes ah, thank you for that info, once we’ve finally narrowed our search to an area I shall keep that in mind.

@RandomMess I don’t know much about grammars, I only have the 1DS but he’s pretty clever so possibly he’d get in. Sounds like it might be worth investigating the grammar school system to widen our area though. Thanks.

I'm in Shropshire beautiful place with lots of villages & affordable houses, don't tell anybody else though it's a secret Smile

spookycookies · 28/04/2021 06:39

I live in a lovely area of Sheffield. Less than 10minutes from the Peak District and in catchment for 3 outstanding secondaries. My 3bed semi is worth approx £300,000.

devildeepbluesea · 28/04/2021 06:40

Vale of Glamorgan. Even in Penarth you can get a 3bed for less than that.

lovelyupnorth · 28/04/2021 06:42

We're got a 2500 Sq ft barn conversion south Cumbria cost £285,000.

Large parts of south Cumbria, north Lancashire, you'd easily get a 3 bed detached near a very good high school from under £450k.

Look around - Milnthorpe, Kirkby Lonsdale, Kendal, Grange over Sands

insancerre · 28/04/2021 06:48

Lytham or St Annes
Lovely place to live and all schools are good or outstanding

Bagelsandbrie · 28/04/2021 06:48

Norfolk / Suffolk borders.

EventuallyDistracted · 28/04/2021 06:51

Just checked Hampshire, nothing in my area. Only a few 3 beds and they are either semis, townhouses, one detached but it's on an estate.

Just a couple. Lots selling quickly the only ones hanging around are over priced

butmumineedit · 28/04/2021 06:53

Most of Lincolnshire- but would recommend Bourne or it's surrounding villages

Excellent grammar school

Can be in a Stamford in 20 mins and again in Peterborough in 20 mins where you can catch the train to London in under a hour.

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 28/04/2021 06:59

Most of Yorkshire! We live on the outskirts of York and our house was less than that. My friend lives in leeds and her 4 bed was less than half that! (A few years ago now, but it won't have doubled in value!)

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 28/04/2021 07:09

Northern Ireland?

Onesnowynight · 28/04/2021 07:18

Wales - Abergavenny! Good schools, countryside, Cardiff close by. What’s not to like?

RampantIvy · 28/04/2021 07:26

@celestebellman

Rural South Yorkshire
Same.

Most of the primary schools in my immediate area are ofsted outstanding, and the two nearest secondary schools are ofsted good.

This is not a grammar school area, so there is no 11+ and the associated angst.
